LANE CAPTURES EMOTIONAL VICTORY WHILE MACEWEN, BOURQUE AND LEBLANC TIGHTEN UP DIVISION POINTS CHASES AT CFS ON SUNDAY
(Shediac, N.B.) — Ron Lane (#46) has won his share of races over the past number of years, but Sunday’s Super Sportsman win in the Covered Bridge Potato Chips 35 was special and quite emotional for the Prosser Brook driver.
With moisture in his eyes in victory lane, Prosser dedicated the win to his grandmother Pauline Lane who passed away earlier Sunday. “She told me to go racing earlier today, so this win is very special and I dedicate it to her memory,” said Lane moments after climbing out of his racecar with the checkered flag in hand. In fact Lane was scheduled to race in Yarmouth, N.S. in Saturday’s Wedgeport Lobster 100 Invitational, but his grandmother’s ailing health put a curve in those plans. “This 35-lap feature win is one of the biggest of my career and I’ll remember it for a very long time just because of the special circumstances surrounding it,” added Lane as he looked skyward.
Lane crossed the stripe ahead of Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook and rookie-sensation Matt Rodgers (#42) of Smithtown. Points leader Craig Ward (#02) of Riverview finished fourth setting up a ‘winner-take-all’ final points championship event with Bourgeois next Sunday afternoon. In fact, only one point separates the two going into the final points event of 2010. In earlier action, Bourgeois captured the win in the 10-lap heat while Calvin Rankin (#45) of Quispamsis picked up his first victory of the season at CFS in the 10-lap semi.
In Shediac Sportsman action, Doug MacEwen (#40) of Charlottetown picked up his second consecutive feature win and fourth of the season to set up another ‘winner-take-all’ final points event next Sunday with points leader Don Marcoux (#27) of St. Louis de Kent. In fact, on six points separate the first four drivers in this division going into next weekend’s final points event with Marcoux handing on to a 5-point lead over Tim Layton (#6) Hillsborough with MacEwen and Tyler Rossiter (#14) of Weldon tied for third, both one point behind Layton. In the 35-lap main event, MacEwen crossed the finish line ahead of Rossiter and Layton while Marcoux had retired to the pit area with ignition problems. Rossiter picked up the win in the heat while Layton was first across the stripe in the semi.
In Four Fun division action, points-leader Scott Bourque (#69) of Cap-Pelé gained valuable points with two wins in the 10-lap heat and 35-lap feature. In the feature, Bourque crossed the line ahead of Phil Coombes (#15) of Shediac Cape and Stephen Lively (#1) of Shubenacadie, N.S. Meanwhile, rookie Justin MacDonald (#7) of Springhill, N.S. not only led his first ever lap at CFS, but capped off the semi-final with his first-ever win at the CENTRE, crossing the stripe ahead of Lively and Bourque.
In Mini Stock action, Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane captured his fourth feature win of the season to go along with an earlier win in the 10-lap heat. In the 35-lap feature, Leblanc crossed the line ahead of Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois and Bob Prosser (#5) of Turtle Creek. Leblanc goes into the final points weekend in third position in points behind Mike Edwards (#23) of Riverview and points leader Martin Landry, who picked up the win in Sunday’s 10-lap heat.
Next Sunday, August 29th at 2:00 p.m., the CENTRE will crown four new division champions during its final points championship racing event of the season. The Atlantic Open Wheel (AOW) Modifieds will also be on hand for their final race of the season at CFS.
