Auburn, Maine – The Selection Committee of the Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame recently announced the names of the five individuals to be inducted into the hall of fame. The Class of 2012 is made up of three race drivers, a car owner/crew chief and one who wrote about the excitement on the track.

Bruce Elder, co-chairman of the Selection Committee and vice-president of the Maine Vintage Race Car Association, announced the members of the Class of 2012 at the General Meeting of the Maine Vintage Race Car Association held on November 9th.

The Class of 2012 inductees are: drivers Glen Andrews, Ray Leach and Bob Turner, car owner/crew chief Conrad Taylor and motorsports writer Bob Morris.

Presented by the Maine Vintage Race Car Association, the Hall of Fame Class of 2012 dinner and induction ceremonies will be held at the Augusta Civic Center on Saturday, March 31, 2012. The Maine Motorsports Hall of Fame was founded in 2004 and presently has 60 members.
The five members of the Class of 2012, with a brief summary of their contributions to motorsports in Maine, are:
- GLENN ANDREWS (Harrison), twenty year racing career began as a 15-year old when Oxford Plains Speedway opened in 1950; consistent top finisher, won on dirt and assault; 1960 champion at Northeastern Speedway in Vermont.

- RAY LEACH (Arundel), twenty-five year racing career began in 1960 at Beech Ridge Speedway; won Modified and ‘B’ Class Bomber championships at Beech Ridge; tutored son Steve; member of the Beech Ridge Hall of Fame

- BOB MORRIS (Auburn), spent nearly thirty years covering motorsports, wrote for New England Speedway Scene and Lewiston Sun Journal SUNDAY; show director for Northeast Motorsports Expo for 20 years; co-founded Maine Vintage Race Car Association.

In addition, two individuals will be honored posthumously for their significant contributions to auto racing in Maine. The families of Clifford Cyr and Roger Shaw will be presented “Special Recognition” awards at the hall of fame ceremonies. Cyr was involved with auto racing nearly twenty-five years as a car owner, chief mechanic and car builder beginning in the early 1950’s at Oxford Plains Speedway. Shaw’s racing career was only fifteen years in length but was a frequent visitor to victory lane in the 1950’s and 1960’s. He won three track championships – one at Oxford Plains Speedway and two at Beech Ridge Speedway.

Theriault started 16th in the Brad Keselowski Racing No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Dodge after an engine problem in practice on Friday, and then he used the pit strategy game to post a Top-10 finish in his third career start for BKR. Theriault pitted for right side tires only at the halfway mark of the event, which was won by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Busch, to gain the track position he would maintain until the finish.

WHO: Austin Theriault, Fort Kent, Maine
TEAM: BKR No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Dodge
CREW CHIEF: Gary Crooks, Mooresville, N.C.

WHAT: CRA Speedfest 200
WHERE: Watermelon Capital Speedway, Cordele, Ga. (.375-mile banked oval)
STARTED: 16th
FINISHED: 8th

***************************

AUSTIN, HOW WOULD YOU SUM UP YOUR RACE?

“The race went pretty well. The field was very stout, the competition was right there. We decided to take two tires (on the pit stop). I think it was the right call knowing the circumstances that we were given. A couple of other drivers did some different things – Chase Elliott took no tires, a couple up front took four. There’s pros and cons to everything.

“On a couple of restarts there, we weren’t able to go enough laps before we’d get another caution or two. We got stuck on the outside, and it was tough to find grip on the outside. The guys with four tires on the bottom had the advantage. To come home eighth wasn’t too bad. It was a solid Top-10. It was something we can build on, and it was a good showing for BKR.”

WHAT HAPPENED TO THE ENGINE DURING FRIDAY’S PRACTICE?

“I think a lot of teams would have just packed up and gone home. The guys are not afraid to work. They stayed up until two in the morning to get the motor in – it just goes to show how they’ll never give up.

“We really hadn’t made too many laps in practice. From what I can tell, it was just a mechanical failure in the motor. There was no predicting it. It didn’t totally destroy. We kind of caught it before it blew up on the track, but we knew it was pretty severe and had to be changed.”

DID THAT SET YOU BACK FOR THE REST OF THE WEEKEND?

“We missed pretty much an hour and a half of practice. That made it a little tougher being that I’d never visited the track before. We still got a decent qualifying run (16th). Obviously, time trialing is still kind of new to me, and I’m learning every time we go to try and time trial. We’ll go back to the drawing board and keep working on trying to improve my qualifying efforts.

“To be honest, I think we were all very happy with the finish that we got. The guys – Tyler, Adam and Gary – they worked their butts off trying to get the car back together. I think we were only able to make two practice sessions before the motor blew on Friday.”

Watermelon Capital Speedway Race Preview

THE STORY

Brad Keselowski Racing development driver Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, makes his 2012 season debut in the CRA-sanctioned Speedfest 200 at Watermelon Capital Speedway in Cordele, Ga., on Sunday, January 29. Theriault is making his third career start in the BKR No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Dodge Super Late Model after two races in the seat for the team late in 2011, but it will mark Theriault’s first career appearance at Watermelon Capital. The .375-mile banked oval plays host to Speedfest for the first time in 2012, after NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Busch won back-to-back Speedfest 200′s at Lanier National Speedway in 2009 and 2010 and Chase Elliott won last year’s event.

THE FACTS
WHO: Austin Theriault, Fort Kent, Maine
TEAM: Brad Keselowski Racing No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Dodge
CREW CHIEF: Gary Crooks, Mooresville, N.C.

BEST CAREER SPEEDFEST 200 FINISH: N/A
LAST RACE AT WATERMELON CAPITAL SPEEDWAY: N/A

WHAT: CRA Speedfest 200
WHERE: Watermelon Capital Speedway, Cordele, Ga. (.375-mile D-oval)
WHEN: Qualifying, 4 p.m., Saturday, January 28; Race, 2 p.m., Sunday, January, 29

DID YOU KNOW?

Austin Theriault competed in two races for Brad Keselowski Racing in 2011, posting a best finish of 12th in the PASS-sanctioned Mason-Dixon Meltdown at Concord Motorsports Park in Concord, N.C., in November.

Austin Theriault finished third in the final ACT Late Model Tour standings in 2011, his highest career finish, on the strength of six consecutive Top-5 finishes to close out the season.

Crew chief Gary Crooks also serves as a PASS North Series crew chief for Mulkern Racing, which won two races as a team in 2011.

Austin Theriault celebrated his 18th birthday this week.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

AUSTIN THERIAULT, Driver of the BKR No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Dodge, On getting the 2012 season started this week at Speedfest 200: “We’re definitely excited to get things moving forward this year. Once again, we’re going into uncharted waters, so to speak. It’s a different track and a different car for me, but I’m confident that we’re with the right people this year and we’ll get some finishes.

“Hopefully, we’ll be able to open some eyes and build on what we’ve started.”

On his goals for the weekend: “It’s kind of hard to say exactly what’s good and what’s bad, but I think a good weekend would be just to go out and qualify. I’m confident we’ll get qualified, but it’s a big race and there’s some good guys that will be there. The main thing will be staying out of trouble and being there at the end of the race.

“I don’t really know much about the track. I’ve seen some photos and videos of it. It seems medium-banked and fairly fast for its size. It’s just another thing we’ve got to overcome, and I’m pretty confident that we will. It’s the same thing we talked about when we started with (the ACT Late Model Tour) – it’s new tracks and building new experiences.”

On having already worked with BKR at the end of 2011: “It’s sort of an advantage. You’re not going into it not knowing exactly who you’re working with. I know the guys, and I know who they are. We didn’t spend a whole lot of time together last year, but once we get there this weekend we can focus on the task at hand and not have to worry about fitting in and building up the chemistry.”

GARY CROOKS, Crew chief for the BKR No. 29 Checkered Flag Foundation Dodge, On the challenge this weekend presents: “I don’t think it’s going to be any easier right at this moment for us. It’s still a new situation, really. We’ve been to a couple races, but we’ve got a whole new car, we’ve got a new track that Austin’s never been to and a track I’ve only been to once in the last seven or eight years.

“I look at it as our first race to build on, really.”

FORT KENT, Maine – Austin Theriault of Fort Kent, Maine, will try and complete some unfinished business this season while also setting out on a new venture in his racing career.

Theriault will run the complete ACT Late Model Tour schedule in 2012 as he chases his first career Tour championship, while the 17-year-old will also run more than half a dozen Super Late Model events as a development driver for Brad Keselowski Racing.

“We’ve had all kinds of good opportunities in the last couple of years and learned from all of them,” said Theriault, who made his debut with BKR in the World Crown 300 at Gresham Motorsports Park in Jefferson, Ga., last November. “I know it all has happened fast, but I feel everything happens for a reason and I’m ready for the challenge.

“I’m really looking forward to this season.”

Theriault, who finished third in the final 2011 ACT Late Model Tour standings after posting six straight Top-5 finishes to close out the season, will attempt all ACT points races this year with his family-owned AT Racing No. 57 Ford.

“We’re really putting all our efforts into going after the title,” said Mickey Green, crew chief of the No. 57. “That’s the main goal for us on the ACT side. Hopefully we can pick up where we left off last year.”

Theriault will begin his 2012 season in the BKR No. 29 at Lanier (Ga.) National Speedway in the CRA-sanctioned Speedfest 200 on Jan. 28-29. He also has plans to run The Rattler 250 at South Alabama Speedway in March, the Rowdy 251 in Berlin, Michigan, in June, as well as both ends of the famed Snowball Derby – both the Super Late Model and Pro Late Model events – in December as part of his schedule with BKR.

BKR is owned by NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver and 2010 NASCAR Nationwide Series champion Brad Keselowski.

“It’s definitely a huge opportunity to spread your wings and head down south for these Super Late Model races, to get some seat time with those guys.” Theriault said. “We did a couple races at the end of last year for BKR and look forward to expanding on what we’ve been able to accomplish in the ACT Tour in the last few years.

“I’m trying to climb the ladder. We’ve been given a huge opportunity now and we’re going to see where it takes us. I wouldn’t be able to be successful without the help of my 57 crew and all the guys that I’ve worked with at BKR.”

Green, who has worked as Theriault’s crew chief on the Late Model side since Theriault’s rookie season in ACT in 2010, believes that Theriault can head as far as he wants.

“I look at him as a Ryan Moore type,” Green said, noting another Maine native and ACT graduate who has driven in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and worked for a number of Sprint Cup Series organizations. “Austin’s equally as good, if not better. Sometimes he doesn’t give himself enough credit for how good he really is.”

Theriault hopes to add two things to his racing resume this season – a run for the series championship and a victory in one of the country’s premier short-track events in the South. It’s one of the reasons he made sure his schedule allowed enough room for all ACT points races as well as some of the bigger Super Late Model shows in the nation down south.

“Last year was a good example of how we can adapt to different obstacles and threaten for a win, and we came close a couple times (in ACT races),” Theriault said. “Over the winter, we’ve taken everything we’ve learned to try and make things better for this season. Championships will come, but we’ve got to win some races, too.

“I think we’ve obviously taken steps in that direction.”

GRIP presented by Hypercoil welcomes NASCAR, Indy 500 Spotter

PORTLAND, Maine – The eyes in the sky will come into sharp focus when the first annual GRIP Seminars presented by Hypercoil Springs takes place later this month.

Frank Bolter has worked the spotter’s stand from the top levels of NASCAR to the Indianapolis 500 to short-track Saturday nights, and he will join GRIP this Jan. 19-22 at the Seasons Event & Conference Center as one of the event’s keynote speakers. While the four-day short-track racing seminar will explore suspension information, brake technology, aerodynamics, driver development and marketing, it will also put an emphasis on spotting technique and its importance to a race team’s overall success.

Bolter, who has been involved with eight Indianapolis 500s and was the spotter for Kyle Busch’s TD Bank Oxford 250 win in 2011, works as a spotter and team consultant in NASCAR. Bolter will make a formal presentation during a 90-minute session on Sunday morning of the seminar, and he will also be available each day to answer individual questions from race teams in attendance.

“We’ve heard from a number of race teams interested in GRIP, and one of the things they keep saying is they want to learn more about spotting,” said GRIP co-founder Jason Enders of RE Suspension. “Frank Bolter is one of the best in the business. He’s won races at Daytona International Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway and Charlotte Motor Speedway – and he’s led drivers to wins from NASCAR’s top series to some of the biggest Super Late Model races in the country.”

In addition to Kyle Busch, Bolter has worked with drivers Brad Keselowski, Johnny Sauter, David Stremme, John Andretti, Scott Dixon, Nelson Piquet Jr., Buddy Lazier and others.

In the management capacity, Bolter has been heavily involved in the NASCAR Nationwide Series and the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, as well as the World of Outlaws.

“I’ve been fortunate to work with some of the best racers in the world – short-track or otherwise,” Bolter said. “I’m really looking forward to GRIP and being able to pass on some of what I’ve learned. I’ve gotten so much out of this sport, and it really means a lot that Jason and Gary (Crooks) have asked me to share some of that at the seminar.”

GRIP Seminars presented by Hypercoil Springs is designed to benefit teams from all walks of short-track racing, including PASS-sanctioned Super Late Models, ACT-sanctioned Late Models, Maritime Pro Stock and Sportsman-type cars, open-wheeled Modifieds and various weekly divisions from across North America.

Enrollment in the four-day seminar is limited to the first 100 people to register, and Hypercoil Springs is offering two free tickets to accompany any four-day ticket sold. Multiple pricing packages are available to accommodate a variety of schedules and budgets. A special room rate at the adjacent Howard Johnson Plaza Hotel, for both single- and double-occupancy, is also being offered.

For more information on GRIP or to register for the seminar, please visit www.GRIPSeminars.com or contact Gary Crooks at (704) 224-6672.

Jason Enders Of RE Suspension Joins Seminar Lineup In Portland

PORTLAND, Maine – With so many suspension package options facing race teams week in and week out during the season, finding the hot setup is a difficult task. With one of the world’s leading suspension specialists on hand for the first annual GRIP Seminar – “Get Racing’s In-Depth Perspective” – drivers and crews will get answers next month.

Jason Enders of RE Suspension will be at the Seasons Event & Conference Center in Portland, Maine, this coming January 19-22. While the four-day short-track racing seminar will explore setup information, brake technology, spotting technique, driver development and marketing, it will also place a heavy emphasis on suspension.

Enders will discuss shocks and shock dynamics, springs bump stops, wheel loads and coil binding during the seminar. He will also be available each day to address individual concerns teams may have.

“I’m really looking forward to GRIP,” said Enders, who joined Gary Crooks of Crooks Racing, Inc., in creating the unique seminar on the short-track racing industry. “Every team out there is searching for that edge, and I honestly believe that this is a way for them to sort through all of the question marks and find what works for their own programs.”

Enders resume includes having served in mechanic and crew chief roles in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series, ARCA Re-Max Series, and Hooters ProCup Series garages. In 2002, he joined his father, Butch Enders, to create RE Suspension – which has become a leader in the race suspension industry over the last eight years. Today, RE Suspension serves national touring teams, regional touring teams, dirt late model teams and road-racing specialists.

Enders has spent time working with clients ranging from the world’s largest motorsports organizations to short-track Saturday night teams, including everything in-between.

“There are a lot of misconceptions out there about what to do and how to do it,” Enders said. “This isn’t at all about having the ‘latest and greatest’ equipment. It all comes back to what we founded this seminar on – that it’s more about knowing what to do with what you already have than trying to keep buying more.”

GRIP is designed to benefit teams from all walks of short-track racing, including PASS-sanctioned Super Late Models, ACT-sanctioned Late Models, Maritime Pro Stock and Sportsman-type cars, open-wheeled Modifieds and various weekly divisions from across North America.

Enrollment in the four-day seminar is limited to the first 100 people to register, and tickets are going fast.
