OXFORD, Maine – Oxford Plains Speedway today released its 2012 racing schedule. The highlight of the schedule is the TD Bank 250 on July 22. NASCAR star Kyle Busch won the 2011 edition of the TD Bank 250, defeating the top Late Model pilots from around the region.

“Since 2004, the TD Bank 250 has attracted a number of Sprint Cup competitors. July 22, 2012, again falls on an off weekend for the Sprint Cup, so it is likely Oxford fans will have the opportunity to see a NASCAR star try and take the checkers,” Speedway owner Bill Ryan said.

“We are very happy with how our schedule lays out. We again feature the American Canadian Tour and the Pro All Star Series, the two premier tours in New England,” Ryan continued. “We believe we have scheduled great events for our drivers, teams and fans.”

Ryan also announced that season passes for all the Speedway events were being sold at a fifty percent discount if purchased by December 31. “We know that the economy continues to be tough for many of our teams and fans. We are giving them the opportunity to be part of all the action for half off if they purchase their pass by the end of December. It is our way of saying thanks to our loyal supporters,” Ryan explained.

For more information on all Oxford Plains Speedway events, go to www.oxfordplains.com or find the Speedway on Facebook. To purchase season passes, call 207-539-8865.

Joey Doiron: PASS North Series
Oxford Plains Speedway Race Report

OXFORD, Maine – Joey Doiron of Berwick, Maine, finished 10th in the PASS North Series season finale, the PASS Championship 150, at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine, on Saturday, October 15. Doiron, who ran a part-time schedule in 2011, finished 10th in the final PASS North standings after posting Top-10 finishes in five of his last six races. Dorion ran as high as second in the season finale at Oxford, but he lost valuable track position when he was forced to pit under caution on Lap 96 when his car shut down unexpectedly while running caution laps. He restarted at the back of the field and had worked all the way back to the Top-10 when the race was called after 118 laps by rain.
WHO: Joey Doiron, Berwick, Maine
TEAM: No. 73 JBJ Machine Chevrolet
CREW CHIEF: John Doiron, Berwick, Maine

WHAT: PASS North Series PASS Championship 150
WHERE: Oxford Plains Speedway, Oxford, Maine (.375-mile oval)
STARTED: 6th
FINISHED: 10th

PASS North Series
LAST RACE: September 24, PASS 150, White Mountain Motorsports Park, N. Woodstock, N.H. (9th)
FINAL POINTS POSITION: 10th

*************

JOEY, WHAT HAPPENED WITH THE CAR?

“It just shut off. It’s kind of a Catch-22. I’m really happy that we had a really good showing here, and everyone knew we were here. I was right all over Brian (Hoar) for the lead for a while. Just riding. The 17 (of Travis Benjamin) got to me, but there was no point in racing yet, so I just held my ground. We had a really good car.

“I think I had the second-best car here, behind (race winner Scott) Mulkern. It just shut off. I’m not sure what happened. We had to come in and pit. We jiggled the wires around and stuff, and it started going again. Obviously, we had to restart in the back of everybody.”

WOULD YOU HAVE BENEFITED IF THE RACE RESTARTED AFTER THE RAIN?

“We were still really good after the pit stop. I think we probably could have gotten up to fifth or sixth if we got going again, but it would have gotten harder after that. It looked like the (Hoar) was coming back a little bit. It’s just kind of the way things have always gone for us here – but it’s still better than having to come down pit road (under green), which is what happened to me in an ACT car.”

STILL, A TOP-10 FINISH IN THE STANDINGS WITHOUT RUNNING THE FULL SCHEDULE HAS TO FEEL GOOD.

“Yeah, that’s still pretty good, I guess. It was a frustrating year. It felt like we had a car capable of being in the Top-5 just about everywhere, but we just had some bad luck. We’ll just get back to work and we’ll have good cars again next year and see what happens.”

Brian Hoar: PASS North Series
Oxford Plains Speedway Race Report

OXFORD, Maine – Brian Hoar of Williston, Vt., posted his first career PASS North Series Top-5 finish by finishing fifth in the PASS Championship 150 at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine, on Saturday, October. 14. Hoar started on the outside pole after winning his heat race and led a total of 40 laps in the first half of the event, which was shortened to 118 laps by rain. The RPM Motorsports No. 37 GossCars.com Dodge loosened up significantly on the eight-time ACT Late Model Tour champion, who finished 11th in his PASS Super Late Model debut at Oxford back in July.

WHO: Brian Hoar, Williston, Vt.
TEAM: RPM Motorsports No. 37 GossCars.com Dodge
CREW CHIEF: Rick Paya, Georgia, Vt.

WHAT: PASS North Series PASS Championship 150
WHERE: Oxford Plains Speedway, Oxford, Maine (.375-mile oval)
STARTED: 2nd
FINISHED: 5th
LAPS LED: 1 time for 40 laps

********************

BRIAN, HOW DID THINGS GO FOR YOU?

“The car was pretty decent for the first 70 laps, but she got pretty loose on me. I think the stagger grew on us big-time. That’s what it acted like. The car is pretty stagger-sensitive, but we had some fun. The car early on was just really, really hooked – but I could feel right from the green flag that it was a little on the neutral side, and it just went looser and looser from there. But it was still a good experience, a lot of fun, and I had a good time racing with the guys out here.

“It would have been interesting (if the race restarted after the rain) with a green race track again and a full fuel load to see what would happen. I think it would have (picked) the car back up.”

DID YOU GUYS LEARN A LITTLE MORE WITH THIS RACE?

“Definitely. That’s the biggest thing right now, is just these tires and figuring them out. I’m interested to hear what the stagger was.

“As far as I go, having a little bit of a feel for knowing where the car was in my heat race. That’s exactly how we took the green flag, not really knowing what we wanted to do. I just don’t have enough experience with these tires. If I were to go back, obviously, I’d tighten it up a little bit. Live and learn.”

Oxford ME (10/15) Scott Mulkern roared from the back of a 34 car field to claim the lead and the win in Saturday’s Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North 150 at Oxford (ME) Plains Speedway. Travis Benjamin led much of the way but had to settle for the runner up spot, and DJ Shaw raced home third in the PASS North season finale, cut short at lap 118 due to rain.

Joey Pole and Brian Hoar led the field to the green and Pole jumped out front early. Hoar took over from laps 29 through 70 but Benjamin was rumbling up through the field and he wrestled the lead away from Hoar on lap 70.

At the half way mark it was Benjamin, Hoar, Joey Doiron, Shaw and Mulkern in the top five and it was clear that Mulkern was on a mission, gaining 20 spots in the first 75 laps. He was racing second by lap 100 and out front on lap 102 but Benjamin battled back, reclaiming the lead until Mulkern made his way past Benjamin on the bottom for good on lap 112. The showers came six laps later and despite every effort to get the race back under way, the persistent rains forced series officials to call it a race on lap 118.

25 of the 34 starters were scored on the lead lap; six minor cautions slowed the action. Mulkern’s margin of victory was .816 seconds.

41 teams attempted to make the 34 car starting field. DJ Shaw, Brian Hoar, and Joey Pole won the qualifiers; Mulkern won the consolation round.

Johnny Clark raced home fourth to cap off a remarkable season that saw the defending series champ earn 7 wins and 13 to five finishes in fourteen starts. The result was more than enough to give Clark and his team a sixth PASS North title, his fourth in a row. Lonnie Sommerville overcame a qualifying race parts failure to finish seventh, enough to earn second in the standings and Ben Rowe’s twelfth place run kept the four time PASS North champion third in the final tally.

PASS North will celebrate the 2011 season on Friday evening, November 4 at the Howard Johnson’s Convention Center in Portland Maine. All the details can be found at www.proallstarsseries.com .

PASS Champs wrap up their title runs in style with feature wins

Oxford ME (10/15) It was Champions Day at Oxford Plains Speedway for all three Pro All Stars Series (PASS) North racing series Saturday, and Andy Shaw (PASS Mods) and Carey Martin (PASS Sportsman) both claimed their respective divisions championship in style by winning their season finales.

For Shaw it was a fitting end to a dominant season. The Center Conway NH racer’s 2011 record is enviable; 10 starts, 7 wins and 9 top five finishes kept Shaw on top of the standings all season long, and moved him to the top of the PASS Mod record book as the division’s winning-est driver.

Ron Henry looked like he had a shot at victory in the early going. Henry took off and left the field in his dust with Dana Reed and Travis Buzzell giving chase. But Shaw was on the move, passing his Uncle Dale for 4th on lap 15, Buzzell for 3rd on lap 18 and on lap 21 the defending series champ was second. Three laps later he took over the top spot and set sail. It was Shaw by a straightaway at the checkers with Ron Henry in the runner up spot and Dana Reed third.

Carey Martin carried a slim five point lead in the PASS Sportsman standings to the season finale, and the 2009 series champ did exactly what he need to do. Martin won his heat race and dominated the 75 lap feature to put an exclamation point on his second PASS title. Craig Smith took the second spot from Clyde Hennessy with 11 to go; Frank Wear and Rusty Poland rounded out the top five.

The Wildcat/Strictly Stock fifty lap Open was a wild affair dominated by Leeds racer Kurt Hewins. Corey Morgan ran up front all day and raced home second with Chris Warming third.

All three PASS North touring series will celebrate the season on Friday evening November 4 at the Howard Johnson’s Convention Center in Portland Maine. Drivers, team members, sponsors and fans are all welcome to join in the festivities. Visit www.proallstarsseries.com for all the details and a printable ticket order form.

Scott Mulkern Wins PASS North Season Finale
Veteran Super Late Model Driver Snaps 7-Year Drought

OXFORD, Maine – Scott Mulkern of Falmouth, Maine, led the final 15 laps en route to his second career PASS North Series win with a victory in the season-ending PASS Championship 150 at Oxford Plains Speedway on Saturday.

The race was called by rain after 118 laps. Two unsuccessful attempts were made by series officials to dry the track before the win was granted to Mulkern and the No. 84 Southern Maine Motors/Community Pharmacies Dodge.

“It means a lot. That’s where you want to be,” said Mulkern, who dedicated the win to his father, Will Mulkern, who died in June after a battle with cancer. “I just had a great car. Gary (Crooks)’s preparation at the shop and Seth Holbrook at the track is unbelievable.”

Mulkern’s only previous PASS North Series victory came in 2004 when he won at Thompson International Speedway. He has raced part-time in the series that last few years.

The win led a great day for Mulkern Racing. Lonnie Sommerville of Saint John, New Brunswick, finished seventh in the No. 48 A.E. McKay Builders Chevrolet to clinch second in the overall PASS North Series standings and win the 2011 Rookie of the Year award.

“Second in the points and Scott winning the race, it’s a great day for Mulkern Racing,” Sommerville said. “Big picture, it’s good for building on next year and what we’re going to do in the future. At some point, this team is going to be unstoppable.”

Mulkern started 25th in the 33-car field after both he and Sommerville encountered problems in first-round qualifying. But the bad starting spot didn’t slow Mulkern, who had cracked the Top-5 by the midpoint of the event with the aid of just two early caution flags.

When the caution flew again on Lap 96, Mulkern was in second and just seven laps later he took the lead from Travis Benjamin. He lost the lead briefly on another restart before cruising to the win.

The only thing that slowed Mulkern was the rain, but even that came too late to stop him from securing the well-earned victory.

“I’ve always been pretty good here (at Oxford),” Mulkern said. “People might not know it because I always seemed to shoot myself in the foot, but I’ve had some really good cars at this track. It’s hard to win here. I thought I could do it with the right people and the right effort.”

Mulkern Racing: PASS North Series
Oxford Plains Speedway Race Preview

THE STORY

FALMOUTH, Maine – Mulkern Racing will field a two-car effort as the PASS North Series puts the final touches on the 2011 season with the rain-delayed PASS Championship 150 at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine, on Saturday, October 15. Lonnie Sommerville sits second in the overall PASS North standings heading into the final race of the year, while team owner Scott Mulkern will make his fifth start of the season. Sommerville, who will lock up the Rookie of the Year title with the start on Saturday, finished second to NASCAR Sprint Cup Series driver Kyle Busch when the series last visited Oxford Plains in July, while Mulkern posted a season-best finish of second in his last outing – in the PASS 300 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway last month.

THE FACTS

WHO: Lonnie Sommerville, Saint John, New Brunswick
TEAM: Mulkern Racing No. 48 A.E. McKay Builders/Community Pharmacies Chevrolet
CREW CHIEF: Gary Crooks, Mooresville, N.C.

WHO: Scott Mulkern, Falmouth, Maine
TEAM: Mulkern Racing No. 84 Southern Maine Motors Dodge
CREW CHIEF: Seth Holbrook, Turner, Maine

WHAT: PASS North Series PASS Championship 150
WHERE: Oxford Plains Speedway, Oxford, Maine (.375-mile oval)
WHEN: 1 p.m., Saturday, October 15

PASS North Series
LAST RACE: September 24, PASS 150, White Mountain Motorsports Park, North Woodstock, N.H. (Sommerville, 4th)
POINTS POSITION: 2nd (Sommerville)

DID YOU KNOW?

Lonnie Sommerville will be the highest finishing rookie in PASS North Series history with a second-place finish in the final overall standings.
Mulkern Racing finished with two cars in the Top-11 when the series last visited Oxford Plains Speedway.
Lonnie Sommerville has a win and 10 Top-5 finishes in 13 series starts this season.
Lonnie Sommerville won a Sportsman race in Canada during the recent break in the PASS North Series schedule.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

LONNIE SOMMERVILLE, Driver of the No. 48 A.E. McKay Builders/Community Pharmacies Chevrolet, On finishing second his last time out at Oxford Plains Speedway: “We probably saved (our car) a little too long. We talked about it before the race started, that we were going to try and run about 80 percent to try and save the tires and keep it under us. We probably didn’t expect as many long green-flag runs as we had.

“I probably used a little bit of it at the end, but I still think we had more left in it. One or two more yellows would have been nice – it was pretty good on old tires. Once we’d get going, I’d get a little tight on the top and a little free on the bottom.”

On how his first full season in the PASS North Series has gone: “It’s been pretty good. This race team is just awesome. Vickie and Scott (Mulkern) give us everything we need, and Andrew McKay from McKay Builders, too. It’s exciting to finish on the podium with these guys as much as we have, but I think we can be even better. Going to a lot of new tracks for me this year has been a challenge, and I feel like we can’t be satisfied – even with as good a year as we’ve probably had. I think it will just help motivate us for next season.

“Everybody on my race team… All my guys just work their butts off.”

SCOTT MULKERN, Driver of the No. 84 Southern Maine Motors Dodge, On racing as a part-time competitor in 2011: “In the big picture, if you look at my style and the way I sometimes shoot myself in the foot, I don’t care about (points). Not at all. Guys like Ben (Rowe) – he likes that. Johnny (Clark) likes that. That’s the challenge for those guys. They like that whole thing, their whole team does, of points racing.

“I don’t think they drive much different than if they weren’t racing for points – that’s not necessarily the way they are. But I personally don’t care about the championship. I want to win races more than that. If you told me I could race all year and not win a race but win the championship, or I could win four races and no championship, I’d want to win four races. We’re trying to do that – but it just goes along with everything else you’re doing.”

SETH HOLBROOK, Crew Chief on the No. 84 Southern Maine Motors Dodge, On racing at Oxford Plains Speedway: “We like going there. It’s a a good place to race, and both of our cars ran well there last time. Hopefully, we can get a win this weekend.”

On racing at Speedway 660: “It’s just a driver’s race track. You can really manhandle the car and not get yourself in trouble. Star kind of reminded me of 660. It’s a two-groove race track. The race could be won by the guy running the top. It’s definitely a two-groove race track in that way.

“You can really get up on the wheel. The harder you drive it the faster you’re going to go, where as a lot of places, it’s a lot more finesse. That’s how I grew up driving.”

Joey Doiron: PASS North Series
Oxford Plains Speedway Race Preview

THE STORY

Joey Doiron of Berwick, Maine, joins the PASS North Series for the rain-delayed 2011 season finale, the PASS Championship 150 at Oxford Plains Speedway in Oxford, Maine, on Saturday, October 15. Doiron finished 10th in his last outing at Oxford in July, part of a stretch that has seen the former Rookie of the Year post Top-10 finishes in four of his last five starts. Despite running fewer races than the rest of the PASS North Series regulars as he focused on part-time competition this season, Doiron has already clinched a Top-10 finish in the overall standings in his sophomore year.

THE FACTS

WHO: Joey Doiron, Berwick, Maine
TEAM: No. 73 JBJ Machine/Dale Shaw Race Cars Chevrolet
CREW CHIEF: John Doiron, Berwick, Maine

BEST CAREER OXFORD PLAINS SPEEDWAY FINISH: 10th (July 2011)
LAST RACE AT OXFORD PLAINS SPEEDWAY: 10th (July 2011)

WHAT: PASS North Series PASS Championship 150
WHERE: Oxford Plains Speedway, Oxford, Maine (.375-mile oval)
WHEN: 1 p.m., Saturday, October 15

PASS North Series
LAST RACE: September 24, PASS 150, White Mountain Motorsports Park, N. Woodstock, N.H. (9th)
POINTS POSITION: 10th

DID YOU KNOW?

Joey Doiron has seven Top-10s in 11 races this season, his second season of Super Late Model racing.
Joey Doiron finished 10th in his first career Super Late Model race at Oxford Plains Speedway in July – the night before the TD Bank Oxford 250 – after several starts in an ACT Late Model.
Joey Doiron has finished outside the Top-10 only once since July, including a win in NASCAR Whelen All-American Series competition at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in August.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

JOEY DOIRON, Driver of the No. 73 JBJ Machine/Dale Shaw Race Cars Chevrolet, On going to Oxford Plains Speedway this weekend: “It’s certainly not been one of my favorite tracks over the last couple of years. But if we can come here and run as good as we have the last couple of races with this setup, we should be pretty good.

“A lot of people compare this place to Beech Ridge, but with my experience in an ACT car, I don’t think they’re anything alike. They might look the same, but they don’t drive anywhere near the same.”

On how Oxford feels from the driver’s seat: “It’s a lot more forgiving (than Beech Ridge), because there’s no backstretch wall, so you have a lot more room. I just have to remind myself over 150 laps that you have to stay off the (inside) curb. That’s my biggest downfall here, is I never can seem to stay of the curb.

“If I can stay off that curb for 150 laps, we should be in pretty good shape.”

On finishing 10th at Oxford back in July: “It was another frustrating race at Oxford – that’s been like my whole career at this place. We were pretty good in practice, and I thought we were going to be a Top-5 car after that heat race. I was just riding at the beginning – there just isn’t much I could do with a crate motor at this place. I was just waiting for everybody to use their stuff up.
