DEANE SMART TAKES SPEEDWAY 95 LATE MODEL FEATURE
In a night filled with close finishes, Deane Smart of Bradley led the Late Model feature from the pole to the checkers, but had to outrun the field through two restarts to do it. The first caution came on lap 18 when Dale Swoboda of Hermon and Wayne Parritt of Steuben came together in turn 3, spinning Swoboda out of fourth place. Both drivers were sent to the rear of the field for the restart. When the green flag flew, Smart outraced Winterport’s Ryan Deane to maintain the lead until lap 29 when Donny Blanchard of Bangor, Alex Waltz of Damariscotta and Ajay Picard of Palmyra spun on the front stretch, bringing out the second yellow of the night. That time Smart outgunned Steuben’s Brenton Parrit when race resumed, and held the lead to the checkers. Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs started last in the 11 car field and worked his way up to take second from Parritt in the final to laps. Parritt finished third, with pole sitter John Kalel II of Orrington fourth. Wayne Parritt recovered from his trip to the rear of the field to finish fifth. Sixth went to Swoboda, with Hermon’s Greg Ellis in seventh. Eighth went to Picard, Waltz was ninth and Blanchard finished tenth. Ryan Deane was credited with 11th, the only car not competing when the checkered flag fell. Continue reading “DEANE SMART TAKES SPEEDWAY 95 LATE MODEL FEATURE” »

Travis and Danielle Beale, a racing couple from Hampden, each won their respective feature events at Speedway 95 Wednesday night. It was the second time this year they’ve both been in victory lane on the same night.
Danielle Beale won first as she led the Ladies 20 lap feature from the pole position to the checkered flag. She received a strong challenge from Becky Elston of Carmel over the final 5 laps, but was able to hold on to the lead for the win. Elston finished second, followed by Winterport’s Chelsea Young in third, who battled Elston for most of the race for the position. Fourth went to Kayla Allen of Bucksport, with Amy Hood of Howland finishing fifth.

Hopkins Wins John Phippen Memorial at Speedway 95
HOPKINS TAKES PHIPPEN MEMORIAL RACE AT SPEEDWAY 95
Mike Hopkins of Hermon won his 7th feature of the season at Speedway 95 Thursday night and did it in style as he won the 100 lap John Phippin Memorial race for Late Models by half a lap over second place finisher Deane Smart of Bradley. Hopkins had a couple of spirited battles along the road to his win, the first for the beginning18 laps of the race with Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs, who eventually finished third. Then a short battle with Smart ensued from a restart on lap 35, until Hopkins took the lead for good on lap 39. The race then went from lap 40 to lap 100 without another pause in the action. Hopkins kept increasing his lead after picking up the $200 bonus money, posted by Larry and Deb Curtis of Buxton, Maine, for leading lap 59. 59 was Phippen’s number for all the years he raced from 1978 to 2010, in the Central Maine area. Dale Swoboda of Hermon placed fourth at the finish, followed by Winterport’s Shane Clark in fifth. The remaining finishing order was 6. Jesse Smith, Bangor, 7. George Dunn, Eastbrook, 8. Alex Waltz, Damariscotta, 9. Greg Ellis, Hermon, 10. Brenton Parritt, Steuben, 11. Phil Richardson, Hermon, 12. Ryan Deane, Winterport. Only the top three cars were on the lead lap when the checkered flag ended the event. Continue reading “HOPKINS TAKES PHIPPEN MEMORIAL RACE AT SPEEDWAY 95” »

Andrew McLaughlin of Harrington wired the Ikey Dore Memorial 50 lap Street Stock event held at Speedway 95 Thursday night, leading all 50 laps and picking up $2250 in the process. The race, which paid $1000.00 to the winner plus an extra $25.00 for each lap led, was marked by seven caution periods, giving the competition several chances to unseat McLaughlin from the top spot. Coming closest was Burnham’s Carl McAlpine, who had three tries but was unable to lead even one lap for the bonus money. Each time they lined up for the green, McLaughlin was able to keep his Camaro out front by the time they reached the scoring line. McAlpine finished in the second spot, with Mac Hannan of Union putting on a late charge to take third. Larry Emerson of Durham, who spent much of the race in the second spot, finished fourth, followed by Bangor’s Shawn Hamel in fifth. The remainder of the finishing order was 6. Ryan Robbins, Dixfield, 7. Chuck Harmon, Amity, 8. Vanna Brackett, Buckfield, 9. Bradley Norris, Ellsworth, 10. Bill Bowley II, Canaan, 11. Jim Carr Jr. Clifton, 12. Jesse Smith, Hermon, 13. BEALE FAMILY RACERS BOTH SCORE IN 95 RACING ACTION
Travis and Danielle Beal of Hampden, a couple racing together on a team headed by Danielle’s father, former Tiger division driver Don DeLuck, each scored a feature win and a second place finish in their respective divisions at Speedway 95 in Wednesday night’s extended length show. Travis scored first in the Little Enduros when he inherited the lead from Darren Durrell on lap 23 of the 25 lap make up feature postponed from last week due to a rain storm halting the action just as qualifying was completed. Durrell seemed to have the race in hand after taking the lead from Carmel’s Ted Ryder on lap 18 when a slower car inadvertently blocked his path. As Durrell tangled with the slower car, Beale slipped past to lead the final two laps to the checkers. Andrew Crosby of Hermon finished in second with Durrell recovering to place third. Zach Audet of Skowhegan and Ted Ryder of Carmel, who initially placed in the top three were both disqualified in post race inspection for illegal tires and wheel tilt. In only his second appearance of the season, Andy Saunders of Ellsworth won the Dysart’s Late Model 50 lap series race at Speedway 95 Saturday night, putting a stop to Mike Hopkins’ domination of the division this year. Saunders started in the third spot and charged past pole sitter Duane Seekins of Stockton Springs on lap 28 of the 50 lap event. Saunders maintained the top spot until the race’s only caution flew on lap 43 for a solo spin by Alex Waltz of Damariscotta. On the restart, Saunders retained his lead and led the field to the checkers. Behind him, Deane Smart of Bradley worked past Seekins to take the second spot at the finish. Seekins came in third, followed by Winterport’s Ryan Deane in fourth and Hopkins in fifth, right where he started the race. Shane Clark of Winterport ran a strong race, finishing sixth, followed by Jessie Smith of Hermon in seventh. Eighth finishing spot went to John Kalel II of Orrington, with Ajay Picard of Palmyra in ninth in his first appearance of the season. The tenth finishing spot went to George Dunn of Eastbrook. Rounding out the 15 car field were Donny Blanchard of Bangor in 11th, 12. Alex Waltx, Damariscotta, 13. Dale Swoboda, Hermon, 14. Brenton Parritt, Steuben and 15, Bob Seger Jr, Frankfort. Seekins and Smart were the heat race winners, and started the feature on the front row.

SHOWERS SHORTEN SPEEDWAY 95 WEDNESDAY SHOW
Just as the final qualifying race took the checkered flag at Speedway 95 Wednesday night, thunder, lightning and rain forced cancellation of the remainder of the Varney GMC-Buick-Mazda Wacky Wednesday show on July 6. The feature events scheduled for that night will be run next Wednesday night, July 13, in conjunction with the regularly scheduled show. Ted Ryder of Carmel and Darren Durrell of Newburgh each won one of the two qualifying races for the Little Enduro Series race scheduled for the night, and will start on the front row when the 25 lap series race is run next Wednesday night. SPECIAL EVENTS HIGHLIGHT UPCOMING SPEEDWAY 95 SCHEDULE
A pair of special Thursday night events highlight the upcoming schedule at Speedway 95 in Hermon as the racing season hits it’s mid point in central Maine.
On Thursday, July 14, at 7:00 p.m. Speedway 95 presents the “Wreaths Across America” 50 lap Ikey Dorr Memorial event for Strictly Street, Outlaw and Wildcat type cars, sponsored by Worster Wreath of Milbridge with help from Banners and Signs of Hermon. The event, promoted by Chuck Hall of Milbridge, is in it’s second year, and is done as a tribute to his friend Ikey Dorr, a street stock racer at Speedway 95 who suffered a fatal heart attack while competing at the speedway in July of 2009. Hall has posted $1000.00 top prize for the event, with $750.00 for second and $500.00 for third. The purse also includes $20.00 lap money for every lap led, so if anyone leads all 50 laps and wins, they could go home with $2000.00 in their pocket. Hall says he has had a lot of interest in the event and expects over 40 cars to register. All other regular Saturday night divisions will also be in action that night.
