Track champions Mo Young, Zach Audet also big winners on Long John Weekend

Unity, Maine – Josh St. Clair of Liberty prevailed in the 111-lap Late Model main event, topping the racing card on Long John Weekend Sunday at Unity Raceway.

St. Clair took over the lead shortly after newly-crowned track champion Jeff Burgess of East Madison spun after the rear end apparently failed on his car after he’d patiently driven from ninth starting position to the front of the pack.

Brian Whitney of Burnham controlled the pace early in the race, leading most of the first forty laps while battling Freedom’s Dylan Turner, St. Clair and David ‘Deuce’ Folsom II of Skowhegan for the frontrunner’s role while Burgess picked his way up through the running order.

Burgess finally got to the front and looked like a good bet to land in victory lane when the rear end woes cropped up, resulting in a spin in front of the field exiting turn four that sent all of the contenders scrambling to avoid major damage.

Once in front St. Clair survived a couple of challenges by Justin Drake of Burnham on late-race restarts to claim the checkered flag.

Drake finished in the runner-up position in his first drive aboard a recently-acquired car, with Turner bouncing back from several pit stops to finish third. Will Collins of Waldoboro crossed the line in fourth position, with Deuce Folsom rounding out the top five. Sixth through tenth-place finishes were posted by Ryan Deane of Winterport, Dale Swoboda of Hermon, Rowland Robinson, Jr. of Steuben, Ben Clark of Clinton and Buxton’s Danny Smart.

Saturday afternoon heat race victories went to Turner, Deuce Folsom and Drake.

Mo Young of Chelsea wrapped up his 2011 championship season in the Wildcat division in winning fashion, leading the entire distance in the extended, 75-lap Long John special.

Behind Young, Oxford Plains Speedway invader and former champion Skip Tripp of South Paris turned back several challengers to earn runner-up honors, with newly-crowned Speedway 95 champion Andrew McLaughlin of Harrington claiming third-place hardware.

Skowhegan racers Kris Matchett and Ed Gilblair rounded out the top five, followed by Mike Moore of Smithfield, Shawn Hamel II of Bangor, Jim Carr, Jr. of Clifton, Todd Rollins of St. Albans and Glenburn’s Woody Davis.

Saturday Wildcat division heat races were won by Moore and Young.

Like Young, Zach Audet completed his championship campaign with a big victory, dominating the Allen Fletcher Memorial Mini Stock 50-lapper to claim a $1000 top prize.

Audet did lose the lead briefly to friend and chief rival Mike Mason, but clearly was the superior car after the green flag was displayed for a couple of laps.

Justin Trombley of Winter Harbor made a rare 2011 start and drove to a third-place finish, in front of Ellsworth’s Ben Ashmore and John Fortin of Vassalboro. Speedway 95 champion Brad Norris of Ellsworth was sixth, followe by Hudson’s Donny Silva, Keith Ogden of Holden, Becky Elston of Carmel and Old Town’s Brent Fletcher, brother of the late driver honored in this Memorial Race.

Saturday afternoon Mini Stock heat race victories were posted by Audet and Tim Robinson of Clinton, who looked fast in the early stages of the 50-lapper before being sidelined by mechanical woes.

Jimmy Dennis of Benton, who’d sat out much of the past two years due to health issues, returned to the cockpit and scored a popular victory in the 25-lap main event for Late Model Pro Four division competitors.

Dennis held off Ben Clark of Clinton throughout the event to claim the checkered flag. Skowhegan brothers Bryan and Dylan Lancaster were next across the stripe. Kevin Douglass of Sidney won the heat race.

Jayson Bosworth of Cornville cruised to victory in the Flyin’ 4 feature race, but the star of the show was young Glenburn racer Emma Libby, who proved she wouldn’t be intimidated by aggressive moves by her rivals en route to an impressive runner-up finish. Jamie Leavitt of Minot ended up in third position, with Justin Larsen of Peru and Vassalboro’s Bob Gerard fourth and fifth, respectively. Bosworth won the heat race.

The Wicked Good Vintage Race Car Association was on hand Saturday afternoon, with Hal Clark, Keith Smalley, Kris Watson and Joe Legere earning trips to victory lane.

Clark, of Bridgton, outran Dick McPhail of Fairfield for the Wicked Good Modified division victory.

Smalley, of Warren, held off Bob Symonds of Casco and Jamie Henderson of Litchfield to score the Wicked Good Early Late Model win.

Watson, a former Unity Raceway Super Street champion, took top honors in the Early Modified class, in front of East Machias racer Kenny Rocinson and Mike Millett of Eddington.

Legere drove John Rice’s Ford Torino to victory lane in the late Model race. Shawn Racilla of Dover-Foxcroft and Hermon’s Duane Dunifer rounded out the podium finishing positions.

Challenger and Enduro competitors had a pair of main events on Long John Weekend.

On Saturday Challenger regular Mike Stowe of Waterville outran division champion Chad Folsom of Skowhegan to the checkered flag. Ken Lord of Waterville was third, followed by George Fernald III of Benton and Fairfield’s Paul Jackson.

Folsom returned to form on Sunday, topping the official order of finish with Fernald second and Stowe third. Bobby Sgeer of Frankfort and Windsor’s Jeff Feyler rounded out the top five.

A 100-lap enduro race tops the card at the lone event remaining on the 2011 Unity Raceway schedule on Fernald Frenzy Fun Day, set for 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, October 22. Several other fun and novelty races will also be presented. For more information call (207) 453-2021 or visit unityraceway.info

Unity, Maine — David Folsom of Skowhegan won the final battle, all that he could do in his effort to overtake East Madison’s Jeff Burgess for the Unity Raceway Late Model division championship.

Folsom was triumphant in the 35-lap main event on Saturday night, but a 21-point deficit entering the night proved to be too much to overcome, and Burgess comfortably claimed the crown with a fifth-pace finish after surviving a spin off of the backstretch durng the race.

Dylan Turner of Freedom cemented a third-place finish in the season-long rankings with a runner-up finish to Folsom in the main event. Ryan Deane of Hermon drove from the back of the pack to claim a third-place finish, with Waldoboro’s Will Collins crossing the line in fourth position, just in front of Burgess. Turner and Burgess won heat races.

Multi-time Keystone Automotive Wildcat division champion Carl McAlpine of Burnham outran his rivals to the checkered flag in the final point-counting race of the season, while Maurice Young of Chelsea wrapped up his first championship at Unity Raceway after scoring seven titles at Wiscasset Raceway.

McAlpine was untouchable during the 25-lapper, while Young prevailed in race-long battle for runner-up honors with last year’s Wildcat kingpin, Chris King of Burnham. Skowhegan racers Kris Matchett and Ed Gilblair rounded out the top five. McAlpine also won the heat race.

Tim Robinson of Clinton prevailed in the 20-lap feature race for the Late Model Pro Four class, while rookie Lance Chapman held on to claim the track title despite a ladt-lap crash that cost him a second-pace finish.

Robinson and Chapman swapped the lead several times until an errant lapped car cost Chapman a chance to cap off his title run with a victory. Skowhegan’s Bryan Lancaster ended up in second position, with Parkman’s Bill Ellis third under the checkered flag. Norm Cummings, Jr. of Augusta was the fourth-place finisher, with Chapman rounding out the top five. Robinson won the heat race.

Zach Audet had the most dominant of all 2011 seasons at Unity Raceway, and closed out his championship season with a main event victory in the Monster Mini class. Audet, the lone driver to enter the final points night with the championship already in hand, outran reigning track champion Mike Wilson to the checkered flag by a healthy margin. Hudson’s Donny Silva filled out the podium, with Farmindale’s Tim Collins and Brent Roy of Vassalboro rounding out the top five. Roy and Silva won heat races.

Brad Bosworth of Cornville scored the feature race victory in the Flyin’ 4 division. Pittston’s Nate Tribbett worked traffic nicely and ended up with a second-place finish. Clinton teen Kyle Robinson wrapped up the division championship with a third-place performance. Bruce Nickerson of Norridgewock and Clinton’s Cole Robinson rounded out the top five. Bosworth also won the heat race.

Chad Folsom of Skowhegan returned to victory lane in the Challenger division, wrapping up the championship in Unity Raceway’s newest class. But the story was really Louie Stillman’s second-place finish after leading the first laps of his career. Stillman, who may be the oldest first-time trophy winner at the raceway, held off Waterville’s Ken Lord, who moved into second place in the final standings with his third-place finish. The previous week’s winner, Mike Stowe of Waterville, ended up in fourth position. Samantha Farnham of Benton rounded out the top five. Lord won the heat race.

Emma Libby of Glenburn won her second straight Teen Thunder feature race, prevailing in a racelong battle with 2011 points runner-up Emily McAlpine of Burnham. April McAlpine of Burnham outran Kyle Jackson oif Fairfield for the third-place trophy, Libby won the heat race.

Andrew Crosby of Hermon made his first Unity Raceway appearance a dominant one, cruising to an easy win in the 20-lap four-cylinder enduro race. Fairfield’s Paul Jackson claimed runner-up honors, in front of Windsor’s Jeff Feyler. Waterville competitors Dustin Switzer and Kersley Santos filled out the top five.

Saturday, October 1 at 1:00p.m. is Fernald Frenzy Fun Day, with a 100-lap enduro and several novelty races and ramp events scheduled. The annual Long John Weekend, topped by special events for Late Models and Wildcats along with the 50-lap Allen Fletcher Memorial New England Mini Stock Classic, wraps up the 2011 Unity Raceway season on Saturday and Sunday, October 8-9.

Unity, Maine — David ‘Deuce’ Folsom II won his second Late Model feature race of the season, topping a busy racing card Saturday night at Unity Raceway.

Folsom prevailed in an exciting battle with Waldoboro’s Will Collins, swapping the lead several times throughout the 35-lap headliner. Late in the race point leader Jeff Burgess of East Madison moved into contention, pressuring Folsom, who proved up to the test. Folsom was followed under the checkered flag by Burgess and Collins, with Ajay Picard of Palmyra and Burnham’s Brian Whitney rounding out the top five.

Zach Audet all but wrapped up the Monster Mini Stock track championship with a wire-to-wire romp in a special 35-lap main event. Clinton’s Tim Robinson was the best of the rest, with reigning division champion Mike Wilson of Chelsea returning after a brief absence from competition to finish in third position, inches ahead of Farmingdale’s Tim Collins. Donny Silva of Hudson was the fifth-place finisher.

Reigning Keystone Automotive Wildcat division champion Chris King of Burnham led all the way his 25-lap main event, holding off hard-charging point leader Mo Young of Chelsea to post the victory. Skowhegan’s Kris Matchett raced hard to claim the final podium finishing position, in front of multi-time division champion Carl McAlpine of Burnham, and newly-crowned Speedway 95 champ Andrew McLaughlin of Harrington.

Point leader Lance Chapman of Benton, a rookie in the Late Model Pro Four class, dominated his rivals in a 20-lap feature race, building a half-lap margin of victory over Tim Robinson of Clinton in a non-stop race. Bill Ellis nailed down a third-place finish, ahead of Augusta’s Norm Cummings, Jr.

Jayson Bosworth of Cornville raced to his second straight triumph in the 20-lap main event for the Flyin’ 4 division. Ever-improving Nate Tribbett showed he’s not far away from his first trip to victory lane, claiming runner-up honors. Clinton’s Cole Robinson was third at the finish line, with the top five filled out by Vassalboro’s Bob Gerard and Bruce Nickerson of Norridgewock.

Mike Stowe of Waterville claimed his first victory in the six-cylinder Challenger division main event, outrunning George Fernald III of Benton to the checkered flag. Chad Folsom of Skowhegan, who had finished first or second in every race this season, was forced to settle for a season-worst third-place finish. Ken Lord of Waterville and Clinton’s Eric Peavey rounded out the top five.

Unity, Maine – Jeff Burgess of East Madison scored his sixth Late Model feature race victory of the season Saturday night at Unity Raceway on a stock car racing program that saw both Steve Rackliff of Starks (Late Model Pro Four) and Jayson Bosworth of Cornville (Flyin’ 4) pull off last-lap triumphs in their main events.

Burgess, locked in a tight battle for the track championship with Skowhegan’s David Folsom, charged past his championship rival’s son, David ‘Deuce’ Folsom II, to take command of the Late Model 35-lapper. In the closing laps the elder Folsom made his way into second position, but he could not catch the high-flying Burgess.

It was the second consecutive feature win for Burgess, who clings to a three-point lead with just two point-counting events remaining on the Unity Raceway schedule. It was the 50th feature race score of his stock car racing career.

Deuce Folsom hung on to claim the final podium finishing position in the Late Model feature event, with the top five filled out by early race leader Tyler Robbins of Montville and Freedom’s Dylan Turner. Deuce Folsom and Will Collins of Waldoboro claimed heat race victories.

Steve Rackliff of Starks also claimed his second straight feature event triumph in the Late Model Pro Four class, but the multi-time division champion needed every inch of the 20-lap event to narrowly beat race-long leader Tim Robinson of Clinton to the checkered flag. Point leadr Lance Chapman of Benton raced to a third-place finish, in front of Skowhegan’s Bryan Lancaster and Norm Cummings, Jr. of Augusta. Rackliff also scored a victory in the heat race.

Cornville teenager Jayson Bosworth prevailed by inches in a paint-swapping battle with Vassalboro’s Bob Gerard to claim victory in the 20-lap main event for Flyin’ 4 division competitors. Bosworth had to restart the race at the rear of the field after his involvement in an early race altercation, but swiftly moved through traffic to stalk Gerard, who had led from the start, seeking his first win in the class. Point leader Kyle Robinson of Clinton grabbed the third-pace trophy, barely holding off a late charge by Pittston’s Nate Tribbett, who was seeking a third-straight podium finish. Bruce Nickerson of Norridgewock rounded out the top five. Gerard won the heat race with ease.

Durham’s Evan Beaulieu prevailed in an exciting climax to the 25-lap main event for the visiting NELCAR Legends Cars Tour, holding off hard-charging Newport teen Mathew Burgoine before flying off of turn one after the checkered flag aboard his winning mount. Beaulieu started in the middle of the pack and beat four-time series champion Bobby Weymouth of Topsham in a race to get by early race leader Ryan Hammar. Burgoine, who lined up dead last on the starting grid, continued his impressive rookie campaign with his runner-up finish, with Weymouth crossing the finish line third under the checkered flag. Durham’s Terry Kirk ended up in fourth position, with Chad Harrington of Richmond rounding out the top five. Kevin Hutchens of East Waterboro and Burgoine won the heat races.

Maurice Young of Chelsea padded his lead in the Keystone Automotive Wildcat division’s championship standings with another feature event triumph. There was plenty of action and position swapping behind Young throughout the 25-lapper, with Burnham’s Carl McAlpine eventually crossing the line in second position, just ahead of Norridgewock’s Shaun Austin, making his first start of the season in the class. Skowhegan’s Kris Matchett led several laps early in the race before posting a fourth-place finish. Ed Sleeper, who finished fifth, also spent some time in front of the feature event. McAlpine won the heat race.

Mike Mason of Madison romped to victory in the 20-lap Monster Mini feature race, outdistancing point leader Zach Audet of Skowhegan to claim the checkered flag. Clinton’s Tim Robinson was the third-place finisher, followed by Cornville’s Brad Bosworth and Greg Cummings of Augusta. Mason also scored in the heat race.

Chad Folsom of Skowhegan continued to dominate six-cylinder Challenger division competition, where he’s finished no worse than second-place this season while winning all but two races. Unity’s David Aldrich was closing in on Folsom as the checkered flag waved after 20 laps, crossing the line in second position. Benton’s Samantha Farnham led over half of the main event and held on to finish third, earning her first trophy in the class. Jackson Aldrich and Mike Stowe, both from Waterville, rounded out the top five. Folsom won the heat race.

April McAlpine of Burnham led wire-to-wire in the Teen Thunder feature event, outrunning her big sister, and second-place points finisher, Emily McAlpine to the checkered flag. Montville’s Cody Robbins earned the third-place trophy.

Dustin Switzer of Waterville raced to victory in wire-to-wire fashion in the 15-lap four-cylinder enduro raceJeff Feyler of Windsor claimed runner-up honors and Kersey Santos of Waterville picked up the third-place trophy after John McCarron was penalized for rough driving tactics.

Unity, Maine – Jeff Burgess of East Madison outdueled Will Collins of Waldoboro to earn his fifth Late Model feature race victory of the season at Unity Raceway Saturday night. The triumph vaulted Burgess to the top of the championship standings by a narrow margin over Skowhegan’s David Folsom, who finished sixth after a late-race spin.

David ‘Deuce’ Folsom II set the pace for the first half of the 35-lap main event, with Collins taking command after a long, spirited battle for the top spot that also included Freedom’s Dylan Turner. After a spin cost Turner a shot at victory, Burgess and Collins raced for the lead side-by-side for several laps.

Burgess prevailed after a late-race restart and outraced Collins to the checkered flag, with Washington’s John Rideout capping a strong run with a season-best third-place finish. Deuce Folsom and rookie Ben Clark of Clinton rounded out the top five. Deuce Folsom and Burgess won heat races.

Mo Young of Chelsea extended his point lead in the Keystone Automotive Industries Wildcat division’s championship standings with a wire-to-wire victory in that 25-lap race. Behind Young there was action aplenty, with multi-time division kingpin Carl McAlpine of Burnham claiming runner-up honors in front of reigning Wildcat champion Chris King of Burnham, who had wrecked and failed to finish the heat race. Kris Matchett of Skowhegan was fourth under the checkered flag, with the previous week’s winner, Ed Sleeper of Vassalboro, rounding out the top five. McAlpine won the heat race.

Austin Clemons of Norridgewock took top honors on the final points-earning night for the Teen Thunder class, wrapping up the track championship in the process. Burnham racer Emily McAlpine was the second-place finisher, and also ended up second in the season-long rankings. Kyle Jackson of Fairfield picked up the third-place trophy, in front of Derek Pariseau of Brooks and Montville’s Cody Robbins. Colby Robbins of Montville won the heat race.

Steve Rackliff of Starks led all the way in the 20-lap Late Model Pro Four division feature event. Rackliff was chased all the way by Augusta’s Norm Cummings, Jr., who finished a close second in his best run of the season to date. Points leader Lance Chapman of Benton claimed the third-place trophy. Tim Robinson of Clinton and Parkman’s Bill Ellis rounded out the top five. Rackliff also wired the heat race.

Zach Audet of Skowhegan continued his march toward a Monster Mini division championship with another 20-lap main event score. Greg Cummings of Augusta won the battle of the yellow Pintos, outdueling Richard Jackson of Charlestown for runner-up honors. Brad Bosworth of Cornville was fourth, followed by Matt Shaw of Burnham. Audet won the heat race.

In the closest finish of the evening, Brad Bosworth of Cornville held off an impressive late charge by younger brother Jayson Bosworth to claim victory by inches in the 20-lap Flyin’ 4 feature race. Jayson charged from the back of a restart lineup after being involved in a crash midway through the event and clearly had the faster car, running out of time to get by his big brother as the checkered flag flew. Nate Tribbett of Pittston picked up second straight third-place trophy after battling for the lead for several laps. Point leader Kyle Robinson of Clinton finished fourth in a borrowed ride, with the top-five filled out by Bruce Nickerson of Norridgewock. Jayson Bosworth won the heat race.

Eric Peavey of Clinton ended a long winning streak, getting by division dominator Chad Folsom of Skowhegan on the final lap to claim victory in the 20-lap Challenger division main event. Waterville’s Ken Lord led most of the race before Folsom went by, and ended up with a third-place finish. First-time Challenger racer Bill Sodulskey of Fairfield was fourth across the line, chased across the stripe by Louie Stillman of Clinton.

Racing continues every Saturday at 6:00 p.m. throughout September, leading up to the annual Long John Weekend on October 7-8. For more information call (207) 453-2021 or visit unityraceway.info

Unity, Maine — Dylan Turner of Freedom nailed down the biggest win of his short career with a victory in the Big John 59 Late Model race, held in the memory of multi-time, multi-track champion ‘Big John’ Phippen of Town Hill, who passed away last summer.

Turner, a third-generation racer and recent high school graduate, charged back into contention after an altercation while swapping the lead with Liberty’s Josh St.Clair went awry with just a handful of laps remaining in the event. That crash, which also eliminated Skowhegan’s David ‘Deuce’ Folsom II after he’d spent virtually the entire distance in second or third position, handed the lead to Cassius Clark of Farmington.

Clark, who missed the heat race and driver’s meeting while his team retreated to their nearby race shop to change an engine after a practice failure, ran afoul of the stated restart policy and was sent to the end of the lead lap cars. Ben Clark got to lead a lap before he, too, was penalized for the same violation. Chuck LaChance of Cushing inherited the lead for a restart with four laps remaining.

Young Turner charged into the lead as the late-race green flag appeared and outran Cassius Clark to the checkered flag. St. Clair, who led 47 of the first 53 laps before his aforementioned incident involving Turner, rebounded to finish in third position. Lachance held on to cross the line fourth under the checkered flag. Danny Smart of Buxton rounded out the top five.

Through the efforts of Wally Gibbons and many others, about $3500 in bonus money was paid out to competitors in the Big John 59, with St. Clair’s third-place disappointment softened to the tune of about $1450 to top the list. Deuce Folsom ($570), winner Turner ($530) and Justin Drake ($470) led a half-dozen others in bonus award earnings.

St. Clair, Drake and Turner won heat races.

Ed Sleeper of Vassalboro nailed down his first-ever feature victory in the Keystone Automotive Wildcat division, leading the entire 25-lap race while being pursued by the division’s top runners. Behind Sleeper the best of the rest was reigning division champion Chris King, who prevailed in a race long duel for runner-up honors with multi-time champion, and fellow Burnham resident, Carl McAlpine. Point leader Maurice Young of Chelsea was close behind in fourth position, with Skowhegan’s Kris Matchett rounding out the top five. Young won the heat race.

Point leader Lance Chapman of Benton got by early leader Steve Rackliff of Starks, then held off Clinton’s Tim Robinson to win the Late Model Pro Four main event. Rackliff foloowed Chapman and Robinson under the checkered flag. Bryan Lancaster of Skowhegan and Parkman’s Bill Ellis rounded out the top five. Chapman won the heat race.

Tim Robinson of Clinton swapped the lead several times with point leader Zach Audet of Skowhegan en route to a thrilling victory in the Monster Mini feature race. Audet chased Robinson under the checkered flag, with Hudson’s Richard Jackson finishing strong in third position. Early race leader Greg Cummings of Augusta hung on for a fourth-place finish, in front of Farmingdale’s Tim Collins. Audet won the heat race.

Cole Robinson of Clinton outran younger brother Kyle to claim victory in the Flyin’ 4 division feature. Kyle Robinson raced the main event in a borrowed car after a hard wreck in the heat race sidelined his regular ride. Nate Tribbett of Pittston picked up his second consecutive third-place trophy. Vassalboro’s Bob Gerard and Mika Wilson of Chelsea rounded out the top five.

Chad Folsom won again in the six-cylinder Challenger division main event, but the Skowhegan racer survived one of his best tests yet. Chad Williamson of Skowhegan traded the lead with Folsom on a couple of occasions late in the race, settling for a close runner-up finish. Eric Peavey of Clinton claimed third-place hardware, with the top five rundown filled out by Waterville racers Dan Lambert and Ken Lord.

Fairfield’s Kyle Jackson charged to the front and got by early race leader and eventual runner-up April McAlpine of Burnham, then drove to his first feature victory in the Teen Thunder class. Derek Pariseau of Brooks was third under the checkered flag. Montville’s Wes Turner bounced back from early-race troubles to finish third, ahead of Readfield’s Kamren Knowles.

Kerlsey Santos of Waterville was a first-time winner in the four-cylinder race, outrunning the previous week’s winner, Christie Foster of Norridewock, to the checkered flag.

Tim Turner returns, conquers Unity Raceway Late Models

Unity, Maine — Tim Turner of Freedom was no stranger to victory lane when weekly Pro Stock racing topped the card at Unity Raceway. For the past couple of seasons Tim has been hard at work passing the baton to a third generation of successful Turner wheelman, son Dylan – a multi-race winner in the track’s premiere Late Model division.

The elder Turner decided he’d knock off some rust on Saturday night, and drove to victory lane 35-lap Late Model feature after swapping the lead late in the event with East Madison’s Jeff Burgess, the track’s second-ranked driver in the championship standings.

Burgess and Chad Dow of Fairfield swapped the lead in the early stages of the race, while Tim and Dylan Turner traded third and fourth positions. A backstretch melee a half-lap into a restart collected more than half the field, effectively removing Dow and the younger Turner from contention.

Burgess claimed runner-up honors after a hard-fought battle, closing the gap in the championship war ever so slightly as he chases points leader David Folsom I of Skowhegan, who was third under the checkered flag. Tyler Robbins and Craig Robbins, both from Montville, rounded out the top five. Dow and Josh St. Clair of Liberty won heat races.

Mo Young of Chelsea helped his championship quest out with another triumph in the 25-lap Keystone Automotive Industries Wildcat division main event. Young had to get by multi-time champion Carl McAlpine to take the lead, then held off reigning titlist Chris King of Burnham to post the victory. Young, King and McAlpine were followed by Skowhegan’s Kris Matchett and Ed Sleeper of Vassalboro. Matchett won the heat race.

Zach Audet of Skowhegan romped to victory in the 20-lap Monster Mini main event, inheriting the lead when front running Tim Robinson of Clinton was sidelined just past the halfway point. Brad Bosworth of Cornville was the best of the rest, with Hudson’s Richard Jackson not far behind in third position. Farmingdale’s Tim Collins was fourth, followed by reigning division champion Mike Wilson of Chelsea. Audet also won the heat race.

Tim Robinson cruised to victory aboard the Jimmy Dennis 38 in an uneventful 20-lap race for the Late Model Pro Four class. Defending champion Steve Racliff of Starks was the runner-up, followed by point leader Lance Chapman of Benton. Norm Cummings, Jr. was the fourth-place finisher. Robinson won the heat race.

Jayson Bosworth of Cornville returned to victory lane after outrunning big brother Brad to the checkered flag in the 20-lap feature race for the Flyin’ 4 division. Nate Tribbett of Pittston claimed his first podium finish at Unity Raceway with a third-place run. Clinton’s Cole Robinson was next across the line, followed by Mika Wilson of Chelsea.

Chad Folsom of Skowhegan extended his winning streak in an otherwise increasingly-competitive Challenger division. Eric Peavey of Clinton led the vast majority of the 20-lapper before he found Folsom alongside for a late-race restart. Peavey collected another runner-up trophy, with Unity’s David Aldrich impressive in wheeling a rented ride to a trophy position. Waterville racers Ken Lord and Mike Stowe rounded out the top five. Peavey and Folsom won heat races.

Teen Thunder was in the spotlight with an extended, 30-lap feature race on the card, and Emily McAlpine of Burnham drove to a popular victory before an arriving crowd, her second feature triumph of the season. Kyle Jackson of Fairfield, in his best performance of the season, claimed runner-up honors. The podium was filled out by the winner’s younger sister, April McAlpine. Reigning division champion Wes Turner and Cody Robbins, both from Montville, rounded out the top five. April McAlpine won the heat.

Christie Foster of Norridgewock nailed down her first career feature race win in the 20-lap enduro race, outrunning Vassalboro’s Ed Sleeper to the night’s final; checkered flag. Newport’s John McCarron, the previous week’s winner, ended up in third position.

The Big John 59 Late Model race highlight’s Saturday night’s card at Unity Raceway on August 27. Several invaders have entered the richest race of the season thus far for the premiere class at Maine’s toughest racing oval. Post time is 6:00 p.m. For more information call (207) 453-2021 or visit unityraceway.info

Unity, Maine – Josh St. Clair of Liberty certainly remembered the quick way around Unity Raceway, returning after a couple of months racing at other venues and driving to an impressive victory in the 35-lap Late Model feature race Saturday night.

St. Clair started behind all of the hotshoes and previous winners and methodically worked his way through the field before engaging rookie driver Ben Clark of Clinton in a thrilling duel for several laps before driving away toward victory lane.

Clark, a former frontrunner in the Late Model Pro Four class, turned in his best run aboard a Late Model, claiming runner-up honors. Points leader David Folsom I of Skowhegan helped his title hopes with a third-place finish, one spot better than his chief rival for the track title, Jeff Burgess of East Madison. Will Collins overcame clutch woes earlier in the evening to claim the final top-five finishing position. St. Clair and Clark won heat races.

The Wildcat 25-lap main event was in doubt right up until the checkered flag waved, and when it was over it was Chelsea’s Maurice Young in victory lane. Young prevailed in a race-long battle with reigning division champion Chris King of Burnham, who raced alongside the winner for several alps before settling for runner-up honors. Ed Sleeper of Vassalboro claimed third-place hardware, in front of Kris Matchett and Ed Gilblair, both from Skowhegan. Matchett, who had destroyed his own car a week earlier, was driving a car normally wheeled by Smithfield’s Mike Moore. Carl McAlpine won the heat race and was racing with the leaders in the main event when mechanical woes sidelined him.

Bill Ellis of Parkman was a popular first-time winner in the Late Model Pro Four feature race, driving away from the competition and leaving his rivals in the dust to fight for runner-up honors. Benton’s Lance Chapman was the best of the rest, reclaiming the points lead in the division just three days after becoming a new father. Skowhegan’s Bryan Lancaster rounded out the podium, with Clinton’s Tim Robinson and previous week’s winner Steve Rackliff of Starks rounding out the top five. Rackliff won the heat race.

Skowhegan racers Mike Mason and Zach Audet raced away from the Monster Mini field to decide that race amongst themselves for the second straight week, with Mason edging out points leader Audet, as they’d finished last time out. Hudson’s Richard Jackson rebounded from an early spin to finish in third position, with Tim Robinson of Clinton and Chelsea’s Mike Wilson completing the top five. Mason won the heat race.

Jayson Bosworth of Cornville drove to another convincing win in the Flyin’ 4 feature event, outrunning points leader Kyle Robinson of Clinton to the checkered flag. Mika Wilson of Chelsea battled to a third-place finish, with Clinton’s Cole Robinson and Nate Tribbett of Pittston fourth and fifth in the final rundown. Bosworth won the heat race.

Chad Dow still has lost only once in six-cylinder Challenger competition, but this week the outcome was in doubt almost until the checkered flag as he chased down fellow Skowhegan racer Cody Williamson to take the lead with just one lap to go. Williamson finish a close second, with Waterville’s Mike Stowe third under the checkered flag. Samantha Farnham of Benton was fourth, followed by Clinton’s Louie Stillman. Eric Peacey of Clinton and Folsom won heat races.

Norridgewock’s Austin Clemons won his fourth straight Teen Thunder main event in convincing fashion, extending his lead in the championship standings. Colby Robbins matched his best finish with a second-place run, with Emily McAlpine finishing third, moving up to second position in the season-long title battle. Derek Pariseau of Brooks and Burnham’s April McAlpine rounded out the top five. Clemons won the heat race.

John McCarron of Newport cruised to victory in the four-cylinder enduro race by a healthy margin. Norridgewock’s Christie Foster made a last-lap move that was good enough to net a second-place finish. Josh Switzer of Woonsocket, Rhode Island was third, followed by Kersey Santos of Waterville and Josh Spencer.

Racing action resumes Saturday night (August 20) at Unity Raceway with kid’s bike races at intermission highlighting a full card of weekly racing series competition. For more information call (207) 453-2021 or visit unityraceway.info

As the season heads into its final run to decide the champion, the Amsoil Nelcar Legends tour was back at Unity Raceway this past weekend for another thrilling event. As many of the top drivers in the series were set to start from the rear of the field, others who have yet to win were running out of time to do so, and tonight was a perfect opportunity to shine in the Unity lights. With 14 Legends Cars taking to the rough and tough track, the fans were treated to another great race.

For the first heat race, it was the 2 of Ryan Hammar on the pole with the 10 of Ed Getty to his outside. On the start, Getty used the preferred high line to his advantage as he grabbed from Hammar. As Getty pulled away, the 27 of Kevin Hutchens was on a march to the front and he took second from Hammar with just a handful of laps to go. He got to the back bumper of Getty and made a bid for the lead with one to go, but it wasn’t enough as Getty held on and took the first heat victory. Hutchens was second at the line with Hammar rounding out the top three.

In the second heat race, the 33 of Alan Smith was on the pole with the 38 of Matt Bourgoine on the outside. Once again the outside groove was the place to be, as Bourgoine drove to the lead with the 56 of Evan Beaulieu right behind. Bourgoine was able to drive away with the second heat win as Beaulieu finished second with the 30 of Ed Field in third.

As the sun set over the 3/8th mile track, the field took to the track for their feature event. It was an all rookie front row with the 81 of Dan Winter starting on pole with Ryan Hammar on his outside. As the field went green, Hammar got the early lead, but Bourgoine came from his fifth starting spot to take the lead early as he began to pull away from the field. As he was pulling away, Hutchens lead Beaulieu, Field and the 399 of Bob Weymouth on their way up through the field from the rear. When they got into the top five the first caution fell around the half way point for a solo spin from the 59 of Reid Lanpher in turn four.

When the field got back to racing, Bourgoine got just enough of a jump on Hutchens to clear him going into turn one and took the outside groove. It was a spectacular race up front as Bourgoine tried to hold off both Hutchens and Field as Weymouth and Beaulieu sat behind ready to pounce on a mistake from the top three. As Hutchens worked the bottom groove, Bourgoine was able to use the outside line and fend off the challenges, as he took the checkered flag for the first time in his Legends Car career. Hutchens made him earn it and wound up second, with Field in third, Weymouth fourth and Beaulieu in fifth. Bourgoine’s first victory comes after finishing right behind the drivers he was racing with tonight many times at Unity, as he had been so close to victory lane, making his first win just that much more special.

The points race is very tight with as the season is now in its closing stages and there are not many opportunities left to come out and see the best racing in New England with the Amsoil Nelcar Legends Tour. The next stop for the tour will be at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway on Thursday, August 11th. Hutchens and Beaulieu are locked in a heated point’s battle for the Thursday Thunder championship and with five points separating them with two races left, it is set to go right down to the final lap to decide the champion.
