Burgess edges Turner at Unity Raceway

Unity, Maine – Jeff Burgess of East Madison survived a torrid battle with Freedom’s Dylan Turner to win the 35-lap Late Model feature race, topping the stock car racing card Saturday night at Unity Raceway.

Burgess, locked in a tight battle for the 2011 championship at “Maine’s Toughest Racing Oval,” lost the top spot to Turner on a mid-race restart, then returned the favor, prevailing in a five-lap shootout following a late-race caution flag.

Point leader Folsom outlasts Late Model rivals at Unity Raceway

Unity, Maine – Points leader David Folsom I of Skowhegan prevailed in a close finish, highlighting a thrilling 35-lap Late Model feature topping the stock car racing card last Saturday night at Unity Raceway.

Starting fourth, Folsom worked his way past his two closest championship rivals – Jeff Burgess of East Madison and Dylan Turner of Freedom, to take the race lead midway through the event. Battling a deflating right front tire, Folsom managed to hold off the hard-charging Will Collins of Waldoboro in the closing laps, denying Collins a second straight triumph by inches at the checkered flag.

Will Collins scores Unity Raceway Late Mdel victory

Unity, Maine – Will Collins of Waldoboro made a late charge to the front pay off, posting his first victory of the season in the 35-lap Late Model main event topping the racing card at Unity Raceway Friday night.

Collins waited patiently for his opportunity as he stalked leader David Folsom II, the found the room he needed to move underneath the Skowhegan racer and grab a lead he would not relinquish.

Unity, Maine – Brian Whitney of Burnham kept his recent streak of good fortune intact with a victory in the 35-lap feature race for the top-tier Late Model division Saturday night at Unity Raceway.

Whitney led all but one lap in the main event, yielding the front running position for a brief period to Skowhegan’s David Folsom I. Jeff Burgess of East Madison, locked in a tight battle for the track championship with Folsom, made a late charge and took second position away from Folsom in the closing stages of the race. Folsom ended up in third position, followed by Dylan Turner of Freedom, who rebounded from a pit stop to post the fourth-place finish. Tyler Robbins of Montville ended up as the fifth-place finisher after Will Collins had his finish negated by a tire violation detected in post-race inspection. Whitney and Turner won heat races.

Unity, Maine – David Folsom II scored his first Late Model feature race victory Saturday night at Unity Raceway in a hard-fought 35-lap race. The Skowhegan newlywed, known as ‘Deuce,’ raced hard for the lead throughout the event – first with veteran hotshoe Jeff Burgess of East Madison who led half the race, then later holding off Freedom teen Dylan Turner in the closing laps.

Turner claimed runner-up honors in one of the most exciting main events of the season, while Burgess had to settle for third-place hardware. Burnham’s Brian Whiney crossed the line in fourth position, followed by the winner’s father, David Folsom I of Skowhegan. Deuce Folsom and Corey Walker of Strong posted heat race victories.

Unity, Maine – Brian Whitney is proving to be an extra-distance specialist in the Late Model division at Unity Raceway. The Burnham racer followed up a Father’s Day 100-lap victory with a 75-lap score on Independence Day weekend in the top-tier class last Saturday night.

Whitney swapped the lead with point leader Jeff Burgess of East Madison during the early stages of the event, then raced side-by-side with Freedom’s Dylan Turner for several laps before he was booted from contention.

Mike Hopkins of Hermon continued his winning streak at Speedway 95 Saturday night as he barely edged out Liberty’s Josh St. Clair to take the Late Model win. Hopkins started 8th in the 16 car field and was at the point by lap 10. St.Clair was involved in a lap one incident and had to restart at the back of the pack, making his charge to the front more dramatic, as he worked his way to the second spot by lap 12. A late race caution had St. Clair and Hopkins restarting on the front row, but Hopkins was able to regain his lead and hold off St. Clair to post his 6th win in a row. St. Clair got as far as Hopkin’s door in the battle for the lead in the last three laps but Hopkins was able to use the faster outside lane to fend off the challenge. In his post race interview, Hopkins admitted that St. Clair had the faster car, but just wasn’t able to get off the corners on the inside lane well enough to complete the pass. St.Clair settled for a close second, followed by Winterport’s Shane Clark in third. Bob Seger Jr. of Frankfort finished in fourth, followed by pole sitter Ryan Deane of Winterport in fifth. Donny Blanchard of Bangor, George Dunn of Eastbrook, Ryan St. Clair of Liberty, Alex Waltz of Damariscotta and John Kalel II of Orrington rounded out the top 10. The remainder of the finishing order was 11. Duane Seekins, Stockton Springs, 12. Jesse Smith, Bangor, 13. Dale Swoboda, Hermon, 14. Deane Smart, Bradley, 15. Dave St. Clair, Liberty, and 16. Unity, Maine – The stock car racing card was rained out Saturday at Unity Raceway.

Competition resumes Saturday night at 6:00 p.m. with all racing divisions scheduled for action.

Jeff Burgess of East Madison currently leads the championship standings for the Late Model division, nine points better than Skowhegan veteran David Folsom I. Freedom teenager Dylan Turner is another ten points back in third position.

Unity, Maine – Burnham’s Brian Whitney scored his biggest win yet, outrunning point leader Jeff Burgess of East Madison and the rest of the stellar Late Model field on a special Father’s Day racing card at Unity Raceway.

Whitney drove around Burgess and into the race lead on the ninth lap, survived a couple of restarts and a couple of late attempts by Burgess to reclaim the top position in the extra-distance, 100-lap main event.

Unity, Maine – Just a week past his high school graduation ceremony, third-generation racer Dylan Turner of Freedom showed the veteran racers the quick way around Unity Raceway Friday night, winning the 35-lap Late Model feature race.

The youngster took the lead from Skowhegan veteran David Folsom I, who already has been to victory lane this season, on the 12th laps and held on to the top spot for the balance of the event.
