Hoar owns the ACT career records for both championships (8) and race wins (33), and he is the defending champion of the NH Governor’s Cup 150. Rick Paya, crew chief on the RPM Motorsports No. 37 GossCars.com Dodge, also owns eight championships as a car owner – the last three of which he’s won with Hoar in the driver’s seat. New to this year’s race, ACT will allow teams to change two tires during the event.

ACT LATE MODEL TOUR
NEXT RACE: Sunday, April 29, Merchants Bank 150, Thunder Road Int’l Speedbowl, Barre, Vt. (.25-mile oval)
FINAL 2011 POINTS POSITION: 1st

DID YOU KNOW?

Brian Hoar won six races races in 2011 en route to the ACT Late Model Tour title.
Brian Hoar has led the ACT Late Model Tour standings since midway through the 2010 season.
Rick Paya has 26 career victories as owner and crew chief for RPM Motorsports.
Brian Hoar spent the past winter training to run in the Vermont City Marathon over Memorial Day Weekend.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

BRIAN HOAR, Driver of the RPM Motorsports No. 37 GossCars.com Dodge, On returning to Lee USA Speedway to begin the 2012 season: “I’m looking forward to it. We’ve got a really good setup there, and we’ve always run well there in the past. I really enjoy that kind of track. It eats up tires and it makes multiple grooves as the race goes on, so you can pass people inside and outside and run two- and sometimes three-wide there.

“It’s always a clean slate every time you go (back to a track). Winning there last year was cool, it was a great event, but it doesn’t mean anything this time around. I know we’ll have a good setup – I’m sure other guys will, too, but I believe we’ll be better than most. The The pit stop strategy is really going to be a big thing. It will be interesting to see how it works. Sometimes Lee goes for long runs of green, so it will be interesting to see how it plays out (late in the race).”

On the importance of getting off to a good start to the season: “Every year you know you’re going to have a bad event or two or three during your championship run, but I guess I’d rather always put those off to the end. It’s kind of like an insurance policy. If you’re going to have to use it, you want to be able to use it later on.

“I’d rather go and lose (a big points lead) at the end of the year than try to climb out of a hole every week. We haven’t been in that position the last three years, but it’s happened to me before. I’d rather start off strong and get the ball rolling – momentum, chemistry, all the guys staying positive. It’s important for everybody to come out of the season-opening events really strong.”

On staying motivated to win another ACT championship: ““There’s lots of guys that are going to try and knock us off the pedestal again this year, but that’s part of what motivates us. It’s a challenge, and we can’t wait for it.

“You either have the passion for the sport, or you don’t,” Hoar said. “It’s that simple. You want to be part of the sport, or you don’t. It seems like a silly question. It’s not like I’m going to hang my hat up now.”

RICK PAYA, Owner and crew chief of the RPM Motorsports No. 37 GossCars.com Dodge, On the keys to winning the ACT Late Model Tour championship: “Really, it’s all about consistency. I know we’re consistent now, but you can always make yourselves better. Every time we go to the race track, we’re always learning. Every race. We motivate ourselves to do better and better and better. Our motivation is to be better than we were last time out.”

UP NEXT

The ACT Late Model Tour heads to its up at Thunder Road International Speedbowl for the Merchants Bank 150 on Sunday, April 29… RPM Motorsports won the final two events of the season at Thunder Road in 2011, with Nick Sweet winning the Labor Day Classic 200 and Brian Hoar winning the season-ending Milk Bowl.

By Phil Whipple

After an unusually mild winter that left northern New England’s snow-based industry in a world of pain, it’s time to end the suffering and hopefully lift everyone’s spirits with the start of a new season of racing.

Red and Judy MacDonald are putting a spring polish on their fabulous facility, as the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) gets set to kick things off with the New Hampshire Governor’s Cup 150 this Sunday, April 15, at the Lee USA Speedway.

Lee is perhaps the best possible place to kick off a new season, with multiple racing lines and a smooth surface as drivers shake off the cobwebs while dialing in their new or rebuilt machines. From the first time I visited Lee in 1992 to see the old ACT Pro Stock tour, I knew Red and Judy had a very racy oval.

What makes this coming Sunday’s version of the ACT opener so special is the tremendous talent and depth in the field. There are an amazing 13 teams already entered with weekly or touring series championships under their belts. With a combined 48 titles between them, “depth in the field” isn’t just hype, it’s actually true. These guys are good!

Top-ranked Late Model teams from across the northeast converge on Tom Curley’s ACT circuit each spring to do battle, and race fans are the real winners. Eight-time ACT champion Brian Hoar; four-time Lee champion and 2011 ACT runner-up Wayne Helliwell Jr., who many feel is a legitimate threat to unseat Hoar from the throne; young Maine-based star Austin Theriault; a re-focused Joey Polewarczyk Jr.; Groveton, NH-based veteran Randy Potter, another pilot many feel will be a title contender in 2012; and many others too numerous to mention will all be at Lee this weekend.

Once again, ACT appears to have a strong mix of veterans and new faces in 2012. We can be delighted that Quebec natives Donald Theetge and Karl Allard have filed entries, bringing their great skills down from north of the border.

Hoar is the defending winner of the Governor’s Cup 150. The skilled multi-time champion from Williston returns with Rick Paya’s RPM team again in 2012 with sights set squarely on securing their ninth title. Hoar will be a factor when we get down to the final 20 laps on Sunday, as well, I suspect. While he doesn’t often get the credit he deserves; Hoar’s ability to drive an ill-handling car up into the top five is unreal.

Since Lee USA was added to the ACT schedule back in 2003, there have been nine different winners in nine races. With his championships there and momentum from 2011, Helliwell is the odds-on favorite to become the event’s first two-time winner.

Previous winners of the New Hampshire Governor’s Cup include Patrick Laperle (2003); DJ Kennington (his only ACT start, 2004); Cris Michaud (2005); Jean-Paul Cyr (2005); Maine native Ben Rowe (2006); Joey Polewarczyk Jr. (2008); Brad Leighton (2009); and Miles Chipman (2010).

Over 50 drivers attempted to qualify for one of 30 starting positions last April at Lee. As for my own personal experience with ACT at Lee, I was there in 2008, 2009, missed 2010 because it was rained out in April and run in July, and was there in 2011 to see Hoar jump-start his eighth title run with a victory. I feel Lee provides the most side-by-side racing on the entire ACT schedule, with the exception of an equally-racy Oxford Plains Speedway.

The 2012 New Hampshire Governor’s Cup 150 is a must-see race for Late Model fans. This year’s version should deliver just the excitement we all need after a cold, windy March that was kind of a slap in the face to winter enthusiasts. Spectator gates open at 10 a.m. Sunday, with qualifying races getting under way at 1:15 p.m.

The season ending event will decide the series championship between title contenders, Chris Pasteryak, of Lisbon, CT., and Les Hinckley III, of Windsor Locks, CT. 27 points separate the two drivers.

Pasteryak, a three-time winner this season including a victory at Lee, captured the 2008 series championship. Hinckley, a two-time winner this year, is seeking his first title.

The Lee finale has been an extremely competitive race since it’s inception in 2005. Six different drivers have won the Lee fall race and all six plan to compete at the two-day event.

Bethel, CT., veteran Jimmy Dolan, the 2005 winner, has indicated he is making the trip. Andy Seuss, of Hampstead, NH., the 2007 winner is expected. 2008 winner Jon McKennedy, of East Chelmsford, MA., 2009 victor Kenny Barry, of Preston, CT., and last years winner, Steven Masse, of Bellingham, MA., are
expected. Hinckley won the race in 2006.

Drivers from throughout the Northeast are expected for the last race.

Rowan Pennink, Huntingdon Valley, PA., Jimmy Kuhn, W Bridgewater, MA., Dwight Jarvis, Ascutney, VT., Louie Mechalides, Tyngsboro, MA., Rob Goodenough, Swanzey, NH., and Norm Wrenn, Nashua, NH., plan to compete.

Saturday practice begins at 12 noon followed by qualifying races for all 12 divisions at 2:00 PM. Sundays feature races will begin at 12 noon with the VMRS 100- lap green-flag race scheduled third in an eleven-race feature line-up.

Canaan, N.H. – -Two traditional race events, popular with fans and competitors alike, will determine the 2011 Valenti Modified Racing Series championship.

As in past years, the run to the title could be claimed this weekend, Oct 8 and 9, at Seekonk Speedway. Seekonk, MA., at the annual “DAV Fall Classic,” or Oct 22, and 23 at New Hampshire’s Lee USA Speedway as part of that track’s 25th annual “Oktoberfest” weekend.

Chris Pasteryak, of Lisbon, CT., takes a 30-point lead to Seekonk over Les Hinckley, of Windsor Lock’s CT.
Pasteryak won the series title in 2008. Hinckley still seeks his VMRS championship.

Both drivers, second-generation racers, have visited victory lane at Seekonk. Hinckley won the inaugural event in 2004 and notched a 100-lap race there last month. Pasteryak won the 2008 “Fall Classic” on his way to his first Series Championship.

Pasteryak has visited victory lane three times this season and Hinckley twice.

Both race tracks have produced great storylines over the years but none tops the competition.

The two season-ending events combined have produced 13 different winners in 13 races.

Long known for great-modified racing and close competition, Seekonk fans have seen seven different drivers in seven races win the “Fall Classic”

After Hinckley’s inaugural win, Andy Seuss, at age 18, took down the honors in 2005. Local favorite’s Dave Berghman and Vinnie Annarummo won in 2006 & 2007, New England legend Mike Stefanik in 2009, and Jon McKennedy last year.

As for Lee, the 3/8-mile oval takes great pride in hosting the season finale. Winning at Lee does not come easy however in six races, six winners.

A teary-eyed Jimmy Dolan won his first in 2005; Hinckley took top honors in 2006, Seuss won in 2007, McKennedy in 2008, Kenny Barry in 2009, and Steven Masse in 2010.

“The day Dwight Jarvis won the title in 2006 will always be remembered,” recalled track manager Bob Watson.” We are proud to host the last race and to have the title decided here is very special.”

A strong field of entries is expected for the 100-lap green-flag race at Seekonk this weekend.

Defending series champion Jon McKennedy, of E.Chelmsford, MA., has indicated he plans to be defend his victory last fall at the historic oval.

2006 DAV winner Dave Berghman, of Seekonk, is expected.

Dwight Jarvis, of Ascutney, VT., and three-time series champion Kirk Alexander, Swanzey, NH., are confirmed entries.

Rowan Pennink, Huntingdon Valley, PA., Mike Holdridge, Madison, CT., and Norm Wrenn, Nashua, NH., are expected.

Qualifying takes place on Saturday with feature races on Sunday At 1:00 PM. More information at www.seekonkspeedway.com

Lee, NH – The chase for the 2011 championships continued at Lee USA Speedway on Friday night, with Tony Carroll taking down the win in the Benson Lumber and Hardware-sponsored NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Small Block Supermodified feature event.

Carroll was running the main event in memory of his car owner, Paul Brown, who had passed away earlier in the week after a lengthy battle with illness. The extra motivation was just what the doctor ordered, as Carroll went flag to flag to score his first win of the year.

Sparky MacIver was next across the stripe, with “Super Dave” Sanborn, point leader Wayne Helliwell, Jr., defending champion Tommy Tombarello, Jr., Bryan Kruczek, Ben Tinker, Moe Lattime, and Mike Spurling the remainder of the top ten.

Several lead changes highlighted the Prime Storage Late Model Sportsman feature event, but when all was said and done, J.R. Baril rolled into victory lane for the second time in three starts aboard the Brian
House-owned, A Family Cab-sponsored entry.

Point leader Ryan Green and the driver he knocked off the top of the season standings a week before, Bobby Melvin, both had stints out front in the early portion of the feature event, but neither was a contender at the finish.

2010 Hobby Stock champion Todd Bregy chased Baril over the second half of the race and finished in the runner-up spot, with Michele Fushpanski, Brian Grantz, Green, Timmy “Rockstar” Johnson, 2010 Rookie of the Year Josh Ball, Kyle Roy, David Piper, and Melvin the rest of the top ten.

The David’s Race Cars and Components Hobby Stock feature fell to longtime veteran and former division champion Brian Thompson, who finally won out after a race-long duel with point leader Mark Parenteau.

The duo were among the few cars to escape an early-race melee that sent several drivers to the pits and the attention of their crews, but Parenteau had a tire go down late in the race, dropping off the pace as the rest of the field took the white flag.

Thompson collected his first win of the year at the checkers, with Patrick Tanguay and Steve Dubois rounding out the podium after finishing second and third. Fourth went to Jim Piaseczny, with Sam Peabody, Mike Williams, Brian DeStefano, Dave McCarthy, Eric Hoffman, and Parenteau the rest of the top
ten.

Kale Billings grabbed the checkers in the Ironman feature event, taking a big early lead and holding it until the checkers to score the victory. Jake Rheaume put in another solid run to finish second, with point leader Troy Washburn taking down third.

Washburn inched past at the stripe to knock multi-time winner Kyle Roy back to the fourth spot, with Danielle Simoneau, Dave Brown, Evan Horvath, Chris Murray, Justin Dawalga, and Kevin Emery the rest of the top ten.

The Senior Tour Auto Racers were a special addition to the program, with a strong field of the restored racers on hand for the night’s action. Jim Gause of Londonderry, NH grabbed the win in the Sportsman end of the program, with George Brockman of Freeport, ME taking the Modified win.

Next Friday, September 9th will be Championship Night for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series presented by Pepsi Bottling Company racing, which will begin at 7:00 PM. Please call the office for more information at 978-462-4252.

Lee, NH – Lee USA Speedway hosted another round of NASCAR Whelen
All-American Series action on Friday night, with the Benson Lumber and
Hardware Small Block Supermodified, Prime Storage Late Model Sportsman,
David’s Race Cars and Components Hobby Stock, and RE/MAX Ironman feature
events all paying double points.

In addition, the Northeast Classic Lites joined the program for a non-points
event, and the fourth round of the Pro Stock/Super Late Model Six Pack
Shoot-Out went into the record books as well.

Matt Frahm of Salem took down the win in impressive fashion in that 50-lap
feature event, driving through the field after starting tail due to a
first-lap incident, and powering past race-long leader J.R. Baril with five
laps remaining to take down the victory.

Baril collected runner-up honors in the post-race ceremony, with series
point leader Donnie Lashua rounding out the podium in the third spot.
Fourth went to Jake Vanada, with Sulo Burbank, Austin Brehio, J.D. Miller,
Rich Eaton, Chris Wilk, and Jeremy Davis fifth through tenth.

Mike Netishen broke out to the early lead in the Small Block Super Modified
30-lap main event, when flagman Bryon Callen waved the green flag on the
field 18 starters.
Ben Tinker put in a solid run all night to collect a second win of the year,
with “Super Dave” Sanborn, Wayne Helliwell, Jr., Mike Ordway, Jr., Matt
Riley, Tommy Tombarello, Jr., George Perreault, Jr., Tony Carroll, Sparky
MacIver, Moe Lattime, John Leonard, Mike Murphy, Jim Barker, Matt Seavey,
Bryan Kruczek, Leslie Keyser and Mike Nethishen next in the final rundown.

Late Model Sportsman point leader Bobby Melvin was sidelined due to
mechanical issues he suffered in practice, and with an 18-car field in their
pit area as well, it was a bad night for a DNS for the popular Melvin.

Grant Aither climbed aboard the Ricky Porter machine for the night, and went
on his way to taking home another win. J. R. Baril finished in second spot
with Bill Ahern making his season debut with a strong 3rd place finish.

Fourth went to Ryan Green, followed by Tony Kawejsza, Brian Grantz, Timmy
Johnson, early leader Kayla Cazares, Larry Moloney, Ryan Gath rounded out
your top ten.

Steve Dubois collected his first win of the year in the Hobby Stocks, taking
advantage of a late-race restart that erased a straightaway lead held by
Steve Douphinette. Dubois got the jump on the outside, easily passed
Douphinette, and went on to score the win.

Douphinette picked up the second place trophy, with Mike Williams, Bobby
Glass, Brian Thompson, Jim Shorey, Mike Anderson, Jim Piaseczny, Brian
DeStefano, and Eric Hoffman the remainder of the top ten.

Kyle Roy came from the rear to win another feature in the Ironman main
event, making his way back to victory lane and another interview with
trackside announcer Peter Falconi. Troy Washburn finished second, with Jake
Rheaume, Evan Horvath, and heat winner Danielle Simoneau third through
fifth.

Jimmy Ryder picked up his first win of the year in the Northeast Classic
Lites main event, outrunning Russ Bryant, Tom “Hulk” Harton, Eddie Gilman,
and Jeff Gilman for the victory.

Lee, NH – The annual Ollie Silva Memorial ISMA Supermodified Classic was the headline attraction at Lee USA Speedway on Friday night, and the traveling series put an impressive, caution-free 75-lap main event into the record books in less than 18 minutes.

Russ Wood, winner of the inaugural ISMA event at Lee USA back in October 1988, broke out to the early lead, and set the pace for the first 29 laps before losing the top spot to Jeff Locke, a former Small Block Supermodified competitor at Lee. Wood retired to the pits with mechanical issues two laps later.

Locke remained at the head of the field for the next 19 laps before another Lee alumnus, ISMA rookie Dan Bowes, took his turn out front. Bowes, the 2009 champion in the Small Blocks, moved out to a healthy lead, but as always, Chris Perley was waiting in the wings.

Bowes worked heavy lapped traffic as the race wore on, and Perley eventually ran him down, ducking to the low side coming off turn four to make the pass and leading the final three circuits to collect his second straight Ollie Silva Memorial checkered.

It was Perley’s third straight ISMA win at Lee, and the fourth in his six starts on the ISMA trail this season. Bowes scored his best ISMA finish to date in the runner-up slot, with Justin Belfiore filling out the podium in the third spot.

2009 race winner Mark Sammut finished fourth, with Locke a car length behind at the checkers to collect fifth. Sixth spot went to former NEMA Midget champion Ben Seitz, with Rob Summers, former Lee Small Block champ and 2010 ISMA Rookie of the Year Joey Scanlon, Jon Gambuti, and Mike Lichty the rest of the top ten.

The Benson Lumber and Hardware Small Block Supermodifieds lined up 16 strong for their feature event, with Ben Tinker moving quickly from the outside pole to the lead. After a couple of tough weeks in a row, Tinker was hoping to catch a break this time out.

2010 Small Block champ Tommy Tombarello, Jr. would have no part of that, as he knocked Tinker off the point a couple of laps later, and took command of the race. Tombarello was the class of the field once again, leading the rest of the way to pick up his third checkered flag of the 2011 season.

After being greeted by an army of well-wishers in the post-race victory lane celebration, Tombarello was presented the Frank Callahan Memorial trophy for his win, with the Callahan family joining him in victory lane for the awards presentation.

Tinker held onto the second spot until a spectacular late-race, three-wide pass by Mike Ordway, Jr. dropped him back to third, where he eventually finished the night. Polesitter Tony Carroll was fourth across the stripe, with Sparky MacIver rounding out the top five.

Super Dave Sanborn collected sixth in the Howdy Clapp machine, with points leader Wayne Helliwell, Jr. seventh in the Witkum Brothers Racing entry. Leslie Keyser finished eighth, with George Perreault, Jr. ninth, and Matt Seavey rounding out the top ten.

The David’s Race Cars and Components Hobby Stocks continued their chase for the 2011 championship, with Jim Shorey running a strong race to take down his second win of the season over Patrick Tanguay and Eric Hoffman.

Veteran Brian Thompson grabbed a fourth place finish, with Mike Williams, points leader Mark Parenteau, Jim Piaseczny, Rookie of the Year contender Brian DeStefano, Sean Nordin, and Kenny Scott closing out the top ten.

The NEMA Lites made another special appearance as part of the Ollie Silva Memorial program, with Paul Bigelow capturing the win over Jim Santa Maria, Carl Medeiros, David Moniz, Andy Barrows, Ryan Bigelow, Seth Carlson, Russ Wood, Jr., Anthony Nocella, and Randy Cabral.
