SCARBOROUGH ME (9/18) Johnny Clark reclaimed the lead on lap 220 of Sunday’s PASS North 300 presented by Southern Maine Motors.com at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway to earn his seventh win of 2011 and his third in the Pro All Stars Series (PASS)North’s richest race. Scott Mulkern charged up through the pack to claim second and home track hero Trevor Sandborn raced home third.

Clark started deep in the pack but by lap 98 he was knocking on leader Donnie Whitten’s door. Two laps later he was in control. Clark lost the lead to Lonnie Sommerville for several laps but the five time PASS North champ reclaimed the point and kept it until lap 191 when Seekonk regular Tom Scully Jr. took over. Clark’s rubber was worn out, but he got the break he needed when the yellow flew on lap 216.. Rubbered up and race ready, Clark took the lead from Brad Babb ten laps later and was never headed, leading the final seventy four laps despite the best efforts of both Mulkern and Sanborn.

Clark’s win was worth $10,000.00 plus the majority of the lap leader bonuses. His margin of victory was .362 seconds. Eleven of the thirty three starters completed all 300 green flag laps in a race that took just over two hours to complete.

Beech Ridge regulars fared well in the 300 with Sanborn third, Dan McKeage 5th and Aaron Ricker 9th. Brad Babb spent some time in the lead before eventually finishing 12th. Bill Rogers ran up front early before settling for 13th at the checkers.

DJ Shaw, Cassius Clark and Travis Benjamin each won a qualifier. Consolation rounds went to Kelly Moore, Aaron Ricker and Johnny Clark.

The PASS 300 was round four of the six race 2011 PASS National Championship Series, and neither title contenders had a good day. National point leader Ben Rowe finished three laps down in 18th but his nearest challenger, Jay Fogleman was 23rd 26 laps down after encountering mechanical problems shortly after the start.

Both the PASS North and PASS National Championship series move on to North Woodstock’s White Mountain Motorsports Park on Saturday September 24. Post time is 6:00 PM.

Joey Doiron: PASS North Series 300
Beech Ridge Motor Speedway Race Report

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – Joey Doiron of Berwick, Maine, posted his second consecutive Top-10 PASS North Series finish with a ninth-place effort in the PASS 300 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine, on Sunday, September 18. Contact with another competitor sent Doiron spinning on the backstretch with less than 70 laps remaining, but Doiron rallied to get back on the lead lap and earn his best career finish in the PASS 300.

JOEY, TALK ABOUT YOUR WEEKEND.

“Once again, just like last year, we were one of the fastest cars all weekend. I was just biding my time and not trying to push it. Riding, riding, riding – then we came in and took rights. We kind of got messed up on pit road and we weren’t able to get lefts.

“Then the car just got evil loose… I was able to get a quick caution and get back on the lead lap. We came in and took lefts, and the thing was a rocket again. It felt just like it did in the heat race.”

WHAT HAPPENED ON THE SPIN?

“I started last because I got the lucky dog, and I got all the way up to fifth. I was under the 40 car, and I don’t know. He just used some race track, I guess. I should have known better, it was still 60 laps to go.

“I’m kind of mad at myself, but at the same time I wish there would have been a little more give and take. I really felt like I had a third- or second-place car today.”

ANY SOLACE OUT OF GETTING A TOP-10 ON A TOUGH DAY?

“It’s good. It’s good because we haven’t really had great finishes. We’re run really good in PASS lately – last week, we kind of had the same deal where we didn’t finish where we deserved to. Chalk this up to being another one of them.

“Last year, we finished 24th or 25th in this race. This year, we ran all the laps and finished in the Top-10. That’s an improvement, so I can’t really be mad about that.”

Lonnie Sommerville: PASS North Series 300
Beech Ridge Motor Speedway Race Report

SCARBOROUGH, Maine– Lonnie Sommerville of Saint John, New Brunswick, continued his second-half surge in the PASS North Series with a fourth-place finish in the PASS 300 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine, on Sunday, September 18. It marked Sommerville’s fourth-straight Top-5 finish and catapulted him into second in the overall PASS North standings with two races remaining. After starting 17th in the 33-car field, Sommerville took the lead for a brief stint on Lap 131. He fought a tight handling race car, however, over the final third of the event but was able to hold on and give Mulkern Racing two cars in the Top-4 at the checkered flag. Teammate and team owner Scott Mulkern finished second in just his fourth start of the season.

WHO: Lonnie Sommerville, Saint John, New Brunswick
TEAM: Mulkern Racing No. 48 A.E. McKay Builders/Community Pharmacies Chevrolet
TEAM MANAGER: Gary Crooks, Mooresville, N.C.

WHAT: PASS North Series PASS 300
WHERE: Beech Ridge Motor Speedway, Scarborough, Maine (.333-mile oval)
STARTED: 17th
FINISHED: 4th
TIMES LED: 1

PASS North Series
LAST RACE: September 11, PASS 150, White Mountain Motorsports Park, N. Woodstock, N.H. (5th)
NEXT RACE: September 24, PASS 150, White Mountain Motorsports Park, N. Woodstock, N.H. (.25-mile banked oval)
POINTS POSITION: 2nd

**************

LONNIE, HOW WAS YOUR DAY?

“I’m a little disappointed didn’t win this race today. At points, we had definitely the best car. But you’ve got to have the best car at the end on Lap 300. It is what it is, so we’ll go on to White Mountain next week.”

WHAT CAUSED YOUR HANDLING PROBLEMS?

“Just before we pitted we started hitting the cross-member on the race track, and we thought we had a right front going down. It kept hitting and hitting, but when we pitted it ended up that we had like 26 pounds (of air pressure) in the tire, so it was fine. When we put tires on and went back out, it was still hitting.

“We probably had a spring collapse. That’s what we’re figuring. When we put (new) tires on, it was a bit better – but only because they were newer tires. But it was still getting down into the turn, hitting the race track and I was chasing it up the track.”

YOU ENDED UP HAVING A GREAT POINTS DAY, THOUGH.

“It’s another fourth for us, so it’s a good points day. Ben (Rowe) had some troubles, and (Alexandre Gingras) had some troubles, too. So we probably gained a little bit from behind and we gained a little bit ahead.

“Obviously, Johnny (Clark’s) out of reach now, and rightfully so. They deserve it. They haven’t had any trouble all year. But I’m excited about this race team.”

Beech Ridge Motor Speedway Race Report

SCARBOROUGH, Maine – Scott Mulkern of Falmouth, Maine, continued to find success in a part-time role, finishing second in the PASS North Series PASS 300 at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in Scarborough, Maine, on Sunday, September 18. Mulkern overcame a flat tire early and a later penalty on pit road to post his best career PASS finish at Beech Ridge. He moved into second with under 50 laps remaining and dogged eventual winner Johnny Clark all the way to the finish. Mulkern, co-owner of Mulkern Racing, led a strong day from the team with full-time driver Lonnie Sommerville also finishing fourth in the event.

SCOTT, TALK ABOUT YOUR RUN.

“I couldn’t be happier. Two great guys I raced with here, Johnny (Clark) and Trevor (Sanborn) – both are great racers. I was right in the middle of them at the end, and I’m happy as hell.”

DID YOU THINK YOU HAD A SHOT AT THE WIN LATE?

“If it went green for the whole time, then maybe. But there weren’t enough laps left. (Clark) was good – he was real good – and I was good, too. Seth (Holbrook) and the guys did a great job all weekend adjusting on it. I don’t ever do that in these races. We just don’t usually have hands enough.

“We helped the car from the beginning. I feel fortunate, getting a flat at the beginning. I’m happy.”

(Scarborough, ME) – Joey Polewarczyk of Hudson, NH has filed an entry to compete in the PASS SLM National Championship, 300-Lap Event at Beech Ridge Speedway on September 24.

Polewarczyk has made five starts on the PASS Super Late Model Touring Series in 2011 and while not in the points hunt, he is finding success with two Top-five finishes in those five starts.

“We really have some great finishes with our Late Model up at the Beech Ridge, although our Super Late Model has never been there, it’s the same chassis and we will use most of the same set-up as we do with our Late Model.“ Joey would add, “This race is a big deal in this part of the Country, I have only raced one 300-lap race in my career, so that will be good to get another one under my belt.”

One of the most important aspects to this PASS race will be the tire strategy, Joey goes on to talk about that, “The tire situation will make or break the race for a lot of teams. The race is an 8-tire race, so we are still trying to figure out what we will ultimately do but we know some teams will work it out to have 2 fresh tires with like 50 laps to go, it’s going to be interesting for sure.”

Joey adds, “We are going up to Beech Ridge to have fun, we are not in the point hunt, so the pressure is not on us. We will give it our best shot and come away with the best finish possible.”

“The #97 Poles Automotive, NH Precision Super Late Model is fast and in the Five PASS races we have raced so far, proves it loves the long runs. This 300-Lap race could see exactly that.”

Joey Doiron: PASS North Series 300
Beech Ridge Motor Speedway Race Preview

Doiron collected his first career Super Late Model victory in a 40-lap NASCAR Whelen All-American Series event at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in August, and he’s coming off a Top-10 finish at White Mountain Motorsports Park last weekend. Beech Ridge has been especially kind to Doiron, who posted a season-best finish of fifth at Beech Ridge back in July and sat on the outside pole for the 300 in 2010.

DID YOU KNOW?

Joey Doiron posted his best career PASS finish of fourth at Beech Ridge Motor Speedway in 2010..
The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series victory at Beech Ridge in August was Joey Doiron’s first victory in a Super Late Model – and his first win at Beech Ridge since he won in the Sport Series at at the track in 2007.
Joey Doiron finished fifth last time out in PASS North Series competition at Beech Ridge for his best finish of the season.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING

JOEY DOIRON, Driver of the No. 73 JBJ Machine/Dale Shaw Race Cars Chevrolet, On heading to the PASS 300 this weekend: “I’m going there to win. If we don’t finish in the Top-3, I’ll be honest, I’ll be disappointed with the way we’ve run over there weekly this season. We had a first or second place car every time we’ve been there. In PASS races, we’ve always been better than we’ve been in weekly races.”

On what the most challenging aspect of the 300 is: “Probably the pit stop. It’s hard to keep up with guys like Johnny (Clark) who can change four tires fast and get back out. Ideally, I think best race for us would be a 200-lap, no tire change race. That would really equalize setups and drivers once the tires wear out.

“But I like (the 300) better than a 150-lap race. It separates guys who can go 150 laps and not really have to drive a car once the tires wear out. It adds more factors with attrition and that kind of stuff.”

On the uniqueness of Beech Ridge: “It’s a very technical track, compared to most we go to. It’s a track where you can easily over-drive it. It’s a fine line of howe you have to drive to keep the tires on it but also be able to stay in the lead pack.

“A lot of people think it’s one groove and you have to be on the outside. I think it’s fun to try and work on the bottom to get around people, because nobody really wants to do that anymore. The roles are kind of reversed from when I was a kid going there and everybody wanted to be on the bottom.”

UP NEXT

The PASS North Series heads to White Mountain Motorsports Park for the second time in two weeks for the PASS 150 on Saturday, September 24… Joey Doiron, who has scaled back to a part-time schedule, finished eighth there last weekend.
