SHEDIAC, N.B. – Weekend two of the Centre for Speed’s (CFS) 2011 Atlantic Stock Car Championships was a “rockin” affair with excitement from the opening race on Saturday afternoon until the final race on Sunday afternoon as new Atlantic Champions were declared in five divisions.

Saturday’s action got underway with a bit of “housekeeping” as the local CFS Streetstocks raced to determine the 2011 season points championship, rained out from a few weeks ago. Don Marcoux (#27) from St. Charles-de-Kent, N.B.and James “Cooter” Smith (#50) or Riverview, N.B. were tied in points coming into the race, and the one finishing highest in this race would be declared 2011 Champion. Tyler Rossiter (#14) of Weldon, N.B. grabbed the lead and dominated, coming home the winner, but it was “Cooter” Smith who came home second, after a battle with Marcoux, who came home third, to capture the Crown. A wild burnout showed the emotion felt by Smith after the conclusion of the race.

The Pro Stocks then hit the track for time trials, during which Greg Proude (#29) from North Wiltshire, PEI demonstrated that he was the man to beat, laying down a couple very fast laps on the reconfigured oval. The two 10-lap heats were won by Proude and Dave O’Blenis (#48) from Boundary Creek, N.B. which gave both drivers the top two starting positions for the Wilson’s Fuels / Go Stores Pro Stock 150.

Fourteen of the region’s fastest Pro Stocks then hit the asphalt for their final race of the 2011 season with Greg Proude dominating proceedings, leading every lap to capture victory and the lion’s share of the winnings and bonus money and prizes. The race was a fast one with only a four cautions in the event. The win was Proude’s first in a season that held its share of ups and downs for the PEI driver and his crew, but he finished the season with on a very positive note which had Proude and his crew celebrating long after the conclusion of the event. Second place went to Jonathan Hicken (#5) of Montague, PEI with veteran driver, George Koskulics (#88x) from New Glasgow, N.S. crossing the stripe in third position.

The Atlantic Championship Streetstock 100 delivered the promised action with a full field of these machines from throughout New Brunswick and PEI along with several of the Truck class competitors from Scotia Speedworld in Halifax, doing battle with action all over the track. Joey Rudderham (#67) from Sydney, N.S., who two years ago was third and last year was second, captured the event, while CFS rookie Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois, N.B. came home second and former CFS Champion Rémi Gaudet (#22) also from Grand Barachois, N.B. coming home third. Unfortunately, all top four finishers failed post race technical inspection, leaving fifth place finisher, and defending Atlantic Champion Rick Cashol (#54) of Saint John, as the winner. Claiming second was Kyle MacEachern (#7) from Charlottetown, PEI with third being awarded to Tyler Rossiter (#14) from Weldon, N.B. Streetstock heat winners were Landry, Gaudet, Darren Price (#29) from Louisburg, N.S., and Mike MacLeod (#17) from Sydney, N.S., who led the first 69 laps of the feature before seeing his champions chances end as a result of a flat tire.

Sunday dawned bright and sunny at CFS for day two of this Atlantic Championship weekend and excitement quickly began to grow in the pits as the Bandalero crews prepared to race for the first time on the speedy oval. In practice these 8 to 15 year old youngsters were hitting speeds in excess of 80 MPH on the 3/8th mile oval.

The Modified Sportsman 100 race featured cars that race in the Modified division at Oyster Bed Speedway in PEI doing battle with some beefed up Sportsmen cars from New Brunswick. After dominating the race for over 90 laps, Robbie MacEwen (#40) from Charlottetown, PEI, the 2011 OBS Modified Champion, suffered mechanical failure, leaving John Rankin (#28) from St. Martin’s, N.B., to claim the win ahead of Ron Lane (#46) of Pine Glen, N.B. and Kris Fournier (#37) from Charlottetown, PEI. MacEwen had earlier captured the win in the 10-lap heat.

The Atlantic Open Wheel Modifieds were the first to race with Paul Costain (#64) of Moncton, N.B. dominating proceedings, capturing the Heat, Semifinal, and 50-lap Feature to claim the 2011 Atlantic Championship event honours in this class. In the feature, Ken Deveau (#3) from Saint John, N.B. chased Costain hard but in the end fell short, coming home second with third going to Jamie Weston (#22) of St. Martin’s, N.B.

The Bandaleros put on an exciting show, with Dana Hamm (#46) from Cambridge, N.B., the Speedway 660 season Champion, coming home the winner, just ahead of the Scotia Speedworld season Champion, Cole Tanner (#08) from Shubenacadie, N.S. and Chad MacDonald (#12) from Salisbury, N.B. Afterwards, all Bandalero drivers were presented with trophies, commemorating their first ever competition at the Centre for Speed (CFS). Heat winners were Hamm and MacDonald.

Next Saturday, October 15th beginning at noon (12 p.m.), the final event of the Atlantic Championships and the final event of the stock car racing season in Atlantic Canada, will be presented at the Centre for Speed (CFS), with Atlantic Championships being awarded in both “Four fun” and “Mini Stock” four-cylinder divisions, as well as the Vance Hanes Auto Parts Sportsman 100. Over 35 cars are registered to compete in the Sportsmand 100 with competitors from every track in the Maritimes and one driver from Newfoundland and Labrador, making this a truly Atlantic Championship event.

All Terrain Vehicle (ATVs) will be challenged by the in-field obstacle course and side-by-side dirt drag racing lanes. As an added bonus, the afternoon will include a Powder Puff Derby for ladies who want to show off their driving skills. General admission for Saturday’s event will be FREE for all families from Sussex and area, Sackville and Chipman (with presentation of a valid driver’s license) whose postal codes begin with E4A through E4P. Admission for all other spectators will be as follows:
Adults (16+) = $10
Children (9-15) = $5
8 and Under = Free
Pit Pass (14+) = $12
Weekend Pass (Sept 24 and 25) = $30

On Sunday, September 25th, RAIN OR SHINE, the ground will definitely be shaking as FOUR top-ranked Monster Trucks invade the CENTRE for an afternoon of ‘outdoors and unleashed’ competition featuring side-by-side racing, freestyle, and wheelie competition events. As if that wasn’t enough, Sunday’s Metal Core / D&R Scrap Metals event will also include a full-contact 100-lap Endurance race, a ‘Barrel race’, Burnouts and the GIANT Atlantic Championship Demolition Derby for a ‘crush and bang’ afternoon of non-stop action.

The large open infield at the CENTRE will feature two-side-by-side ovals complete with “big air” opportunities for the drivers of these Monster Trucks, similar to what fans have seen during the ‘Monster Jam’ events held at facilities such as the Houston Astrodome in Texas. Sunday afternoon’s event will provide the drivers with all sorts of opportunities to showcase the awesome horsepower and handling of these awe-inspiring machines.

The full throttle action gets underway at noon (12:00 p.m.) on September 25th with an opportunity for fans to get up-close and personal with their favorite MONSTER TRUCK competitors during a photo and autograph session. These 1,800-horsepower car crushing machines will then be ‘unleashed’ at 1:00 p.m. when the action starts with side-by-side car crushing races, freestyle and wheelie competitions.

MACDONALD AND BRUN DOMINATE IN FOUR CYLINDER STOCK CAR ACTION AT CFS

(Shediac, N.B.) — Hot temperatures and hotter action on the track were the order of the day during
Battery Direct points championship stock car racing action Sunday afternoon at the Centre for Speed’s (CFS) in Grand Barachois, N.B. as the track’s Points Championship battles came down to the second last week.

Rookie Justin MacDonald (#7) of Springhill, N.S. consolidated his points lead in the Four Fun division by recording a “Grand Slam”, taking wins in the 10-lap heat and semi-final before
outdistancing the field in the 35-lap feature. Meanwhile, Gerard Brun (#33) of Grand Barachois continued his torrid pace since returning to racing in the Mini Stock division one short week ago by also recording a “Grand Slam”, making it five wins in the six races he has competed in this season.
In Four Fun division action, MacDonald virtually assured himself of the 2011 points championship in the division with the three wins, crossing the stripe in the feature ahead of his closest rival, Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville and rookie Cody Bourque (#9) of Cap-Pelé. Bourque also took home second place hardware in both the heat and semi-final followed both times by Hall in third.
In Mini Stock action, Gerard Brun continued his winning ways in only his second week of racing this season with his three wins. Brun was first across the stripe in all three events, finishing ahead of Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane and current points leader Scott Bourque (#69) of Cap-Pelé in the feature. Bourque recorded a second place finish in the heat and a third place showing in the semi-final, while points championship runner-up Julien LeBlanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane was second in the semi and the feature to set up a very close battle next week in the chase for the 2011 Mini Stock championship.
In Super Sportsman action, 20-year veteran Dan Bourque (#15) of Grande-Digue reeled off wins in the 35-lap feature and 10-lap semi-final, indicating that this could once again be his last season at the helm of the NAPA Auto Parts Chevrolet. In the feature, he crossed the stripe ahead of defending points champion Luc Bourgeois (#88) of Memramcook, who is poised to capture his second straight championship going into the final week of points competition at CFS, while Bert Cormier (#3) of Bouctouche was third across the line. Bourgeois had earlier reeled off his third win of the season in the 10-lap heat to go along with a second place showing in the
semi.

In Shediac Sportsman action, the 2011 division championship will go down to the final weekend as defending points champion Don Marcoux (#27) of St.-Louis-de-Kent and James Smith (#50) of Riverview are tied atop the standings after Sunday’s action. Smith came into Sunday’s event with a slim 4-point lead over Marcoux who reeled off victories in the 35-lap feature, his 5th feature win of the season, along with a win in the heat and third place showing in the semi-final. Smith had to
settle for second in both the heat and semi and then suffered mechanical difficulties in the feature relegating him to a spectator from the pit area as his closest rival took the win in the main event. Tyler Rossiter (#14) of Weldon picked up the win in the semi-final along with a third place showing in the heat while rookie Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois came home third in the feature.

Racing resumes next Sunday, August 28 at 2:00 p.m. with the final points championship racing event of the season in all four CFS stock
car divisions. Next week’s action with also feature a ‘Powder Puff’ race for ladies, who are asked to register this week with CFS, as well as a ‘Mechanics Race’ where the guys who usually turn the wrenches in the pit area will get a chance to show their stuff behind the wheel of the race cars they help repair and adjust on a weekly basis.
CFS will then take a few weeks off before hosting their 12th annual Speed Weeks events, including the “Atlantic Monster Truck Nationals and Four Wheel Jamboree” on September 24th and 25th followed by the “Atlantic Stock Car Championships” on October 1st, 8th, and 9th.

Black Flags Fly in Shediac as Bourque scores “Grand Slam”

Sunday August 7th (Grand Barachois, NB) – Despite deteriorating weather throughout the day including a minor rain delay it was an exciting day of racing featuring local and visiting drivers during the POGO Inivtational 50′s here at the CENTRE for Speed.

Scott Bourque of Cap Pele, piloted his 69 Ministock to a “Grand Slam” in the MiniStock division edging out Josh Simon (#71) of Boucthouche at the finish line by less than a 12″ margin to capture a perfect day. Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane picked up seconds in the Heat and Semi and a third in the Feature. Simon also had a strong day, picking up thirds in the Heat and semi, coupled with a second in the Feature.

Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville, NB returned to success on Sunday as well as he piloted his Chevy to wins in the Heat and Semi in the Four Fun Division before a collision in the Feature 50 lap with his arch rival from Springhill, Justin MacDonald (#7) put him on the sidelines for the rest of the day. The two top competitors in the division have had a running fued since the beginning of the season. MacDonald and Hall were awarded with a Black Flag for the altercation and retaliation that followed and their day was ended early. Dave Matthews (#99) of Halifax had a great day winning the feature and picking up a second in the Heat, and a third in the Semi. Macdonald (#7) picked up a third in the Heat and a Second in the Semi , while Cody Bourque (#6) of Grand Barachois almost won the feature but was edged out by Matthews. Bourque grabbed second in the Feature. Jeremy Hallett (#73), another Halifax regular, picked up a third in the Feature to round out the placings.

In Sportsman action, Don Marcoux (#27) of Saint Marie picked up wins in the Heat and Semi and added a second in the Feature, for another fine performance. Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois also had a good day, picking up seconds in the Heat and Semi, but a naging mechanical problem continued to hinder Landry’s quest for a feature win forcing him to retire midway through the final race. Cape Bretoner, Mike MacLeod (#17), however put on a great performance to claim victory in the final event of the day for the division starting on the pole and leading for most of the event.

The Sportsman had originally been scheduled for a day off this weekend, but requests from a couple of drivers got them added to the schedule mid week. Unfortunately, two big Sportsman events on Saturday evening, left several cars unable to compete and as a result, only three Sportsman were able to compete. What they lacked in numbers though, they made up for, in great competition. Robert Raynes picked up the win in the Heat, along with a third in the Feature. Bert Cormier captured victory in the Feature, to go with a second in the Heat, while Craig Ward picked up a third and a second for his efforts.

One of the highlights of the day was the “Kids Hotshoe” race. The biggest cheers went out to the youngest competitor, a little girl around two, who completed half the race distance of one lap. Over fifty youngsters from throughout the region took part in the event.

At the completion of racing, fans were treated to a burnout display by Josh Gaudet of Shediac and Kirk Mullane of Halifax. Both left the fans cheering for more.

Next week, the Open Wheel Modified Tour invades the Centre for the third time this season, and the action promises to be “hot and heavy”. Buyer Flyer Points Championship racing in all divisions is also on the schedule. It is also a speedway “Community Day” for families from Postal Codes E5A through E5Z who receive free entry just by showing thier valid address via a drivers license.

Rankin Captures Series

Sunday’s final leg of the Maritime Sportsman Series at Centre for Speed was an excitement fulled event with 17 Super Sportsmen taking the green flag in the 100 lap feature. In the early going, John Rankin took the lead and for a short while, it looked like he was going to run away from everybody. However, slowly but surely, the #11 machine of Cal Hatfield chased him down and took over the lead on lap 38. At lap 56 however it was the wiley veteran, Bill Sommerville’s turn to assumed the lead and despite the best efforts of several competitors, Sommerville hung on for his first ever 100 lap win in Shediac in a car built and sponsored by his son Lonnie.

Calvin Rankin, whho had won the first two legs of this series, methodically worked his way through the pack from 9th position to capture second place at the end of the day. It was good enough for Rankin to clinch the overall Maritime Super Series Championship title for 2011. Cousin John (Rankin) fought back to claim third place after falling back as far as ninth on the day. Earlier, John Rankin, Luc Bourgeois, and Cal Hatfield captured wins in the qualifying heats while Bert Cormier came home victorious in the last chance qualifier. Bourgeois still leads the weekly racing points title race by a slim margin after entering the event ahead of Bert Cormier by just one (1) point.

In Ministock action, Scott Bourque came home with victories in the Ministock Heat and Semi, while Julien LeBlanc captured the Feature. In “Four Fun” action, Justin MacDonald recorded a “Grand Slam”, winning all three events.

James “Cooter” Smith continued his winning ways in the Shediac Sportsman (Street Stock) class, capturing the Heat and the Feature. Rookie competitor Martin Landry captured victory in the Shediac Sportsman Semi and was a force to be reckoned with in both the Heat and feature, until mechanical problems forced him to the sidelines in the Feature. After the race, Smith stated that Landry would have won, if not for the mechanical issues. Rick cashol, a regulkar at Speedway 660, made the trip to CFS for this weekend and grabbed second in the Feature while Don Marcoux came home third in the 50 lap event.

Next week at the Centre, there is regular POGO points Championship racing in the “Four Fun”, Ministock, and Shediac Sportsman classes. The Super Sportsmen are off next weekend and return to action on August 14th. The feature event this weekend will be a 75 lap inivtational for 4 Cylinder cars plus a Shediac Sportsman 35. It will also be “Community Day” for all families with Postal Code E4R through E4Z meaning every family in that postal code receives free entry into the event.

STEWART RECORDS AOW MODIFIED GRAND SLAM WHILE SMITH PICKS UP SECOND STRAIGHT FEATURE WIN AT CFS

(Shediac, N.B.) — Shelly Stewart (#43) of Emerald, PEI showed the boys how to get it done by recording a grand slam during the Area Food Bank Atlantic Open Wheel (AOW) Modified stock car racing event held at the Centre for Speed’s (CFS) in Grand Barachois, N.B. on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, James Smith (#50) of Riverview picked up his second career feature win in the 35-lap Shediac Sportsman / Streetstock to go along with a first place finish in the heat.

In Atlantic Open Wheel (AOW) Modified action, Stewart who was a regular Street Stock competitor at CFS a few years ago, picked up her first feature win in the 35-lap feature thanks to a great jump on the green flag to start the event. Stewart, who started the race on the outside front row, powered quickly into turn #1 to take the lead from pole sitter Doug Matchett (#75) of Miramichi and then, she never looked back. However, Jamie Brown (#48) of St. Martins, N.B. did make it interesting in the later stages of the event when he challenged Stewart for the lead over the final few laps, but the PEI driver was able to hold off Brown at the finish line with Jamie Weston (#22) also of St. Martin’s coming home in third. Stewart had earlier captured
wins in the 10-lap first heat and the 12-lap semi-final while Paul Costain (#64) of Moncton was the winner of the second heat.

In Shediac Sportsman / Streetstock action, James ‘Cooter’ Smith (#50) of Riverview followed up his first career feature win last week with his second main event win in a row after a hard-fought battle with rookie Martin Landry (#00) of Grand Barachois. Landry, who had earlier recorded his first ever division win in the semi-final, led the most laps in the main event, but had to settled for second after Smith got a great jump on the green flag during a late-race restart. Tyler Rossiter (#14) of Weldon, N.B. took home the third place hardware.

It was also an afternoon to remember for Justin MacDonald (#7) of Springhill, N.S. who recorded his first career feature win in the 35-lap Four Fun division main event to go along with a win in the semi-final and a second place finish in the heat. In the feature, MacDonald crossed the stripe ahead of Kyle MacMillan (#5) of Hammonds Plains, N.S. and last week’s feature winner Brandon Skidmore (#4) Springhill, N.S. Meanwhile, Scott Hall (#98) of Sackville was victorious in the 10-lap heat.

In Mini Stock action, Julien Leblanc (#07) of Haute Aboujagane picked up his third feature win of the season in the 35-lap main event after coming home second in the heat and third in the semi-final. Scott Bourque (#69) of Cap-Pelé, who picked up two first place finishes in the heat and semi-final, had to settle for second in the feature with veteran Brad Daley (#66) of Saint John crossing the stripe third in the main event.

Racing resumes next Sunday July 24 at 2:00 p.m. with points championship racing in all four CFS stock car divisions.
