OXFORD, Maine – Oxford Plains Speedway today released its 2012 racing schedule. The highlight of the schedule is the TD Bank 250 on July 22. NASCAR star Kyle Busch won the 2011 edition of the TD Bank 250, defeating the top Late Model pilots from around the region.
“Since 2004, the TD Bank 250 has attracted a number of Sprint Cup competitors. OXFORD, Maine – Two of Oxford Plains Speedway’s three headline championships have been clinched with a week to spare, each by repeat offenders.
With a sixth-place finish Saturday night, Travis Adams wrapped up his fourth consecutive Late Model title and his fifth overall at OPS. Only Jeff Taylor (nine) and Mike Rowe (seven) have won more in any divisions at the 3/8-mile oval.
Skip Tripp won for the fifth time in his last six Strictly Stock starts and his eighth overall to capture that crown for the second year in a row.
The only driver unable to close the deal was Justin Karkos, who retired early from the Polly’s Variety 100 Mini Stock main event and settled for a 14th-place finish.
All is not lost for Karkos, who needs only to start his heat and feature race next weekend to cement his first career championship.
Reigning champion Ashley Marshall dominated the four-cylinder finale for his third Mini Stock victory of the season, putting everyone except the second and third place cars one lap down..
It applied an exclamation point to what has been a frustrating season for Marshall, whose team has sustained no fewer than five engine failures in its title defense.
“I just gave it some and it’s still ticking,” said Marshall, referring to a series of celebratory tire doughnuts. “There’s no way I would be here without all the time and effort my dad (Jeff) has put into this car this year.”
Calvin Rose Jr. gave himself a mathematical chance at the championship and solidified his rookie of the year credentials with a runner-up finish. He dedicated the run to his mother, Bonnie, who was just released from a two-week stay in the hospital with a life-threatening condition.
Jeff Beaule made it two rookies on the podium with his initial third-place trophy.
Marshall’s win was slowed only twice by caution, the final time at lap 90, By then, he had a buffer zone of five lapped cars between himself and Rose.
Tim Brackett put on a clinic in the 40-lap Late Model showdown, charging from the rear of the field in the outside lane to log his third win of the season.
“Was that awesome or what? That’s the best the car has gone since we’ve been back here,” said Brackett, a 2005 OPS champion who returned to the speedway in midseason of ’08. “It’s good to be home, and this (victory lane) is the best place of all.”
Scott Luce led most of the event before yielding to Brackett on lap 27 and settling for a season’s best second. Shawn Martin used a last-lap pass of Jeff White to collect third, with Jimmy Childs fifth.
Tripp steered clear of a tangle between the top two cars of Mike St. Germain and Matt Williams on lap 10 and dominated a green-white-checkered restart to seal his title defense.
The father-son tandem of Larry and Zach Emerson was second and third, respectively, followed by Kim Tripp and a resurgent St. Germain.
Corey Williams claimed his first OPS checkered flag in more than 10 years of trying, leading wire-to-wire in the 20-lap Sport Truck feature.
John Lizotte took second and clinched the title in the Acceleration Series Saturday Showdown, joining his father Jon as an Oxford champion. Wednesday night point leader Ryan Farrar took third.
Derek Cook and birthday boy John Childs took the checkered flags in twin, 20-lap Runnin’ Rebel features. Kyle Hewins, third in the ‘A’ feature in the car normally driven by his nephew, Ryan, held on for his second Saturday Showdown championship in three years.

OXFORD, Maine – Two point leaders were disqualified in the post-race inspection and another finished outside the top 10 in a season-changing Wednesday night of Acceleration Series racing at Oxford Plains Speedway.
David Childs (Chimney Tech Outlaw) and Kevin Oliver (Call of the Wild RV Center Sport Truck) failed the tech check after their 20-lap features. That turn of events denied Oliver his sixth straight victory in the pickup division.
Ryan Robbins was a runaway winner ahead of Childs and the rest of the Chimney Tech Outlaw ‘A’ field, posting his first victory as a rookie in the class.
Guy Childs and Jim Davis Jr. also prevailed in Outlaw action. Ryan Farrar ascended to his fourth win of the season and reclaimed the Sport Truck point lead after the Oliver infraction.
John Childs and Jim Hart each posted their second victory of the season in Macdonald Motors Runnin’ Rebel. Vanna Brackett prevailed for the third time in Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy Ladies, with Bill Grover leading the Goulet Home Inspections Renegades for the third straight time and fifth overall.
Robbins used the outside lane to charge from fourth to first and set sail in the Outlaw finale. Terrific racing from second to ninth ensued a full straightaway behind the winner.
When the father-son team of Josh (second) and David Childs (fourth) was removed from the running order, it was Steve Moon snagging second ahead of last week’s winner Chris Coolidge and new series point leader Chris Burgess. Zach Bowie shuffled ahead to fifth.
Guy Childs charged from sixth to first on the opening lap of the ‘B’ feature and cruised to his second straight victory and third of the month.
Again it was a four-car scrap for second providing the entertainment value, with reigning division champion Ron Abbott Jr. getting the better of John Patria in the outside lane on the final lap. Josh Paradis edged Michael Haynes for fourth.
Davis flashed to his fifth win of this comeback season, rallying from 11th to first in the first eight laps of the ‘C’ main. Missing both halves of a double-feature night two weeks ago due to mechanical failure sidetracked Davis in the point standings and put him in the low-point group.
Allen’s Ladies champion Dottie Patria led the first seven laps and posted a career-best Outlaw finish of second in only her second start of the season. Carey Robertson was third, followed by Todd Hall and Phil Knowlton.
John Childs and Brady Romano started on the front row and ran away from the field in a caution-free Rebel ‘A’ feature.
Romano lurked within a car length but couldn’t make the pass in the late stages. Zach Audet was unchallenged for third, with red-hot rookie Ryan Hewins holding Dustin Salley at bay for fourth.
Usual suspects Troy Jordan (12th), Kyle Hewins (14th) and Matt Dufault (18th after a flat tire) all struggled in the four-cylinder showcase.
Hart charged to the lead on lap 2 and stayed at the front of an evenly matched, four-car gaggle at the head of the ‘B’ main. Derek Cook applied pressure throughout but was relegated to second.
Jeff Hebert and Mark Childs Jr. swapped third on five occasions before Hebert held the spot at the checkers. Brian Nason wound up fifth.
Farrar overcame a race-long battle with Opie Allard, Corey Williams and John Lizotte and put himself in position to in inherit the Truck victory, his first since June 27.
Lizotte landed second with another strong run from the rear of the field. Jeff Schmidt surged to third after the Oliver dismissal, with Allard fourth and Williams fifth.
Brackett went two months between victories after setting the all-time Ladies Acceleration Series wins record in June. Her recent rough luck turned around when she overtook Christina Spaulding on lap 4 and left the field in her tire tracks.
A green-white-checkered finish gave Patria a late opportunity to bid for the win, but Brackett held her line and prevailed by a car length.
Spaulding held onto third, while division point leader Cathy Manchester overcame a spin and a fuel leak to swipe fourth and protect a two-point advantage over Brackett. Rookie Tori Burgess was fifth.
Grover spotted defending Renegade champ Jason Hannigan the lead at the outset before driving underneath Hannigan on lap 2. Grover maintained a two-car length lead until the conclusion.
Bob Morey took third and moved into a virtual tie for the point lead with Gerard Cote, who was fifth. Spencer Morse, a 16-year-old second-generation racer, fashioned fourth in his first OPS start.
Oxford’s busy weekend continues Thursday with the championship round of the Agren Appliance Summer Slam triple crown, with 75-lap features for all three Championship Series divisions. Qualifying begins at 6:30 p.m.

OXFORD, Maine – The fans watched Ricky Morse seemingly become the ninth different winner in 12 Oxford Networks Late Model features this season Saturday night at Oxford Plains Speedway.
The technical inspection staff discovered something different, awarding Tim Brackett the 40-lap victory after Morse was disqualified for an illegal carburetor spacer in his ride.
Brackett became only the second repeat winner of the season in Oxford’s top division, joining four-time winner Travis Adams.
Don Wentworth held off Adams’ charge at the line for what would become second. Jeff White wound up fourth, with Shawn Knight fifth.
Skip Tripp’s bid for a record-shattering 19th career Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy Strictly Stock victory fell one spot shy and was stymied by a rookie.
Rick Spaulding borrowed the Dennis Dee memorial #88D and led wire-to-wire for the 30-lap win, his first in the Championship Series.
Tripp took second, followed by Mike St. Germain, Matt Williams and Larry Emerson.
Spaulding was the second rookie to find victory lane on the evening.
When leaders Jimmy Childs and Darrell Moore tangled at the front of the Allen’s Mini Stock field, rookie Calvin Rose Jr. was in the right place to inherit his second straight 30-lap triumph.
Rose denied a late charge from point leader Justin Karkos to score the victory. Defending champion Ashley Marshall completed the top three, trailed by first-year Mini competitor Jake Burns and Larry Melcher.
Guy Childs stormed to his second Chimney Tech Outlaw victory of the season, breezing to the front in an action-packed, 20-lap encounter.
Steve Moon emerged from a nine-car battle for second with Josh Childs, Chris Burgess and Jerry Freve giving chase.
Dottie Patria tightened her grip on a likely second straight Agren Appliance Saturday Showdown title with her sixth Allen’s Ladies victory of the season.
Tori Burgess and Missy Morgan continued the theme of terrific nights for rookies, finishing second and third. Missy Blash was fourth with Annie Chartier a career-best fifth.
OPS will crank it up four straight nights next week, starting with the Acceleration Series on Wednesday. The Agren Summer Slam will run its championship round Thursday, followed by the JARRacing Photography Go Kart Series championship night and triple features Friday and the Championship Series. Starting time each night is 6:30 p.m.

OXFORD, Maine – Skip Tripp took his place in the Oxford Plains Speedway history books Saturday night with a convincing victory in the Time Warner Cable 100 for the Allen’s Coffee Flavored Brandy Strictly Stock division.
Tripp’s third straight win and sixth of the season ran his career total in the class to 18, tying the unrelated “KimDog” Tripp and Shane “The Destroyer” Green for the top spot on the division’s all-time list.
It was a spin-and-win for Tripp, who lost an overwhelming lead to Jon Brill after tangling with the lapped car of Mike St. Germain just prior to the halfway point. Tripp returned to the track in second spot, then received a reprieve when the lone caution flag of the race flew for a piece of debris on the backstretch at lap 49.
The resumption belonged to Tripp, and he pulled away to nearly a full straightaway lead before coasting across the finish line a second in front of rival Mike Short.
“Last week (Short) said Nick Hoyt helped me to win, so I guess this week St. Germain (tried to help) him to win,” Tripp said. “It’s just an ongoing thing with us, but whatever.”
Short also entered the race with five wins and remained second in the points, making an impressive late drive around Larry Emerson and Brill to claim the runner-up trophy.
“Nobody sees what goes on out back (in the pit), but if we didn’t love it, we wouldn’t be here doing it,” Short said of his continuing on-and-off-track battle with Tripp.
Brill led the race on two different occasions before settling for third, the best finish of the season for the 2000 division champion. Emerson claimed fourth, with rookie Hoyt matching a career-best in fifth by holding off two-time champion Jim Duguay.
Travis Adams remained the lone repeat winner of the Oxford Networks Late Model campaign in style. Adams padded his point lead in pursuit of a fifth division championship with his fourth checkered flag of the campaign, taking the lead from upset-minded Gary Chiasson with 15 laps remaining.
Adams rebounded one week after his first finish out of the top five (ninth) all season.
“Our set-up guy, which is me, made some changes and obviously didn’t know what he was doing,” Adams said. “We went back to the way it was before, and thankfully we picked up where we left off. I’m looking forward to the rest of the season.”
Don Wentworth protected his newfound grip on second place in the point standings with a runner-up finish.
“It’s a been a great season. It would be better if Travis might take a Saturday night off to go to a family reunion or something,” Wentworth joked.
Tommy Ricker posted his third straight podium finish in third, followed by Tim Brackett. Chiasson edged Corey Morgan at the stripe for fifth.
Calvin Rose Jr. earned his first career Allen’s Mini Stock feature win the hard way. The rookie took the lead from Ken Daigle Jr. early in the event, then spent the second half of the 30-lapper with point leader and six-time feature winner Justin Karkos nipping at his heels.
Rose responded to the challenge and maintained his one-car length advantage until the checkers.
“It’s been a while since I’ve had one of these,” said Rose, who was a winner in the four-cylinder Macdonald Motors Runnin’ Rebel division in the Acceleration Series. “I have to thank my father most of all. He does so much work on this car, or I never would be up here.”
Karkos hasn’t finished out of the top four since a flat tire knocked him out of the lead in the second race of the season.
“Calvin earned that one.” Karkos said. “I’ve had motor problems all season, so I finally pulled it out and sent it to Butler & MacMaster this week. They gave me priority over everyone else and promised me it would be ready for this weekend. I got it back at 5:30 Friday afternoon, so I owe this one to Spencer Robbins and Dave MacMaster.”
Butch Keene credited used tires loaned by Rose and Karkos for his third-place finish. Jake Burns kept pace with Rose in the tense Rookie of the Year battle, nipping Kevin Bishop in the scrap for fourth.
Acceleration Series Agren Appliance Saturday Showdown competition produced two repeat winners.
Kevin Oliver extended his winning streak to four races in Call of the Wild RV Center Sport Truck action. Ryan Hewins, a 17-year-old rookie and the fourth member of his immediate family to win at OPS, bagged his second Runnin’ Rebel triumph in less than a month.
Oliver ascended to the top spot when Brad Corson — a relief driver for suspended “Flyin” Ryan Farrar, was disqualified after the post-race inspection.
Corey Williams moved up to second, the best finish of his extensive career, with rookie Jeremy Wagner posting his second third-place finish of the campaign.
Jeff Schmidt and John Lizotte recovered from a mid-race tangle to run fourth and fifth, respectively. Oliver accepted blame for their contact.
“I made a dumb move and got into the 22 (Schmidt),” said the winner. “I don’t like to race that way.”
One month ago, Hewins debuted a Honda that looks like a twin to the rocket steered by his point leader uncle Kyle. With Kyle twice veering off the track due to contact with other cars, Ryan saw no challengers after accelerating into the lead at the halfway point.
Derek Cook turned out his frustrating season, leading early before picking up second-place honors. Scott Farrington made a determined drive to third in the outside lane, with reigning Showdown champion Troy Jordan fourth and Jeff Hebert fifth.
Kyle Hewins settled for eighth in the 21-car field.
OPS returns to action Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. with a full card of Acceleration Series action. WOXO Night is on tap for the Championship Series next Saturday, August 15 at 6:30 p.m.
