Unity, Maine – Josh St. Clair of Liberty and Steve Moulton of Holden were winners in the top two classes at Unity Raceway Friday night, while two feature wins were scored by both Carl McAlpine of Burnham and Molly Feeney of Hope on a busy racing program including three make-up features previously postponed by summer rain.
Other feature winners on Benton Family Fun Park Night included Clinton’s Ben Clark, Steve Rackliff of Starks, Kyle Gallant of Veazie, Mike Mason of Skowhegan and Chris Burbelo of Frankfort.
Josh St. Clair continued his impressive string of top-notch finishes in his Unity Raceway appearances with a hotly-contested victory in the 30-lap Late Model feature. St. Clair and eventual runner-up Brian Whitney of Burnham both worked their way from the back of the starting grid to get by early race leader Kevin Douglass of Sidney, then squared off on a pair of late-race restarts where the lead tandem made contact on a couple of occasions before the third-generation teen from Liberty prevailed under the checkered flag.
Scott Modery of Hermon chased St. Clair and Whitney under the checkered flag, but his third-place finish was negated in post-race inspection due to a carburetor violation. Modery’s troubles made Douglass the official third-place finisher, with the top five filled out by Ajay Picard of Palmyra and Skip Conner of Oakland. Modery crossed the line first in the heat race.
Steve Moulton’s Super Street division feature victory was of the come-from-behind variety, as he chased down race-long leader Donnie York of Thorndike and got to the lead only about 100 feet before the checkered flag waved over the side-by-side combatants. Moulton edged out York by about two feet, with Shaun Austin of Norridewock picking up the third-place trophy. John Kalel II of Orrington ran in second position for most of the race before settling for fourth position at the finish line, with the top-five rundown completed by Ryan St.Clair of Liberty. Moulton also won the heat race.
Carl McAlpine won twice in Wildcat division feature race competition, which found the top five finishing positions in both races to be identical when all was said and done. Maurice Young of Windsor was runner-up in both races, nearly claiming victory in the second go-around. Luke Rickards of Anson nailed down a pair of third-place finishes for his best night of the season, with reigning Wildcat division champion Dustin Hubbard of Unity claiming fourth position in both main events. Brent Chase of Burnham, a winner for the first time in Wildcat competition a week earlier, posted a pair of fifth-place finishes. McAlpine also carried the checkered flag following the heat race.
Ben Clark and Steve Rackliff split top honors in the two Late Model Pro Four feature events.
Clark prevailed in the first main event to pick up his second win of the season in dominant fashion. The Clinton teenager was chased under the checkered flag by Augusta’s Corey Walker and Benton’s Jimmy Dennis, the latter bouncing back from a first-lap spin while challenging Clark for the race lead. Bryan Lancaster of Skowhegan and Ben Nile of Anson rounded out the top five.
Rackliff outran Clark to earn his trip to victory lane in the regularly-scheduled Late Model Pro Four feature race. Walker, Lancaster and Dennis finished in third through fifth positions. Clark drove to victory in the heat race.
Kyle Gallant cruised to victory lane in the Monsta Mini main event. Defending division champion Mike Wilson of Chelsea made Gallant work for the win, holding the eventual victor off for more than half of the race before yielding the top position. Wilson went on to finish in the runner-up slot, with Dyaln Lancaster of Skowhegan grabbing the final trophy. Rick Grant of LaGrange finished fourth, followed by Ben Clark of Clinton. Gallant also won the heat race.
Mike Mason won the Flyin’ 4 feature event, adding to his impressive victory total just hours after being named Unity Raceway’s ‘Driver of the Month’ for August. Mason’s latest victory wasn’t as easy as many of his earlier conquests, as Pete McCollett of Readfield dogged the Skowhegan racer throughout the 20-lap distance en route to a second-place finish in his first appearance of the season at Unity Raceway. Natasha Dyer of Arrowsic led the first hale of the event as both Mason and McCollett worked their way from the rear of the starting lineup. Dyer ended up with the third-place trophy, with top-five finishes also posted by Cody Sleeper of Augusta and 15-year-old Brad Bosworth of Cornville, making his first start in the class after posting several wins in the Teen Thunder division, which had the night off. Dyer and McCollett won the Flyin’ 4 heat races.
Molly Feeney of Hope added to her division-leading win total in Ladies competition with a pair of feature race victories. Feeney, who has missed several events due to other commitments, isn’t a contender for the 2009 track championship, but she certainly has established herself as the lady to beat at Unity Raceway.
In the first Ladies main event Alica Goodwin of Clinton was closest to the flying number 14 driven by Feeney. Mika Wilson of Chelsea crossed the line in third position, followed by Shelby Kimball of Cornville – rebounding after a trip into the frontstretch sand pile – and Kayla Allen of Bucksport.
Feeney’s closest rival in the nightcap was division point leader Kimball, with Carmel’s Becky Elston earning third-place honors. Kayla Allen and Mika Wilson rounded out the top five. Kimball won the Ladies heat race.
Enduro division racers were turned around to race in the opposite direction on the thiord-mile oval, and they provided their most entertaining race of the season with Chris Burbelo prevailing after running most of the event side-by-side with multi-time winner Patrick Cook of Swanville, who finished in second position. Young Matt Kimball of Cornville made up a lot of ground late in the race to finish third, and he may have been a factor in deciding the winner had the race been just a bit longer. Chad Michaud of Fairfield was fourth across the line, followed by Daymon Dodge of Troy.

Unity, Maine – Chris Thorne of Sidney drove to victory in the Late Model feature at Unity Raceway Friday night, scoring his first victory of the season at Maine’s Toughest Racing Oval. Mike Mason of Skowhegan and Bradley Bosworth of Cornville each won a pair of feature events on a busy, 12-feature racing program.
Other victors in feature race competition included Kris Watson of Hermon, Brent Chase of Burnham, Ben Clark of Clinton, Kyle Gallant of Veazie, Shelby Kimball of Cornville, Daymon Dodge of Troy and Max Zachem of Preston, Connecticut.
Chris Thorne, making just his second start in Unity’s top class this season, quickly worked his way past Louie Picard and point leader Frank Moulton to challenge early race leader Ajay Picard. Thorne took over the top position on the 16th circuit in the 30-lap race and built a healthy lead before surviving three late-race restarts to earn his trip to victory lane.
Ajay Picard of Palmyra crossed the line in second position, followed by Scott Modery of Hermon, making his first start this season at the Unity oval. Fred ‘Pee Wee’ Brown of Winterport finished fourth, with Kevin Douglass of Sidney rounding out the top five. Brown and Moulton, of Burnham, won the Late Model heat races.
Kris Watson added to his Super Street point lead with an impressive win in the Super Street division’s main event. Behind Watson an ultra-competitive, four-car battle took place throughout the 25-lap race, with Glenburn’s Steve Moulton bouncing back from a heat race crash to claim runner-up honors. Vassalboro’s Ed ‘Fubby’ Drake was third under the checkered flag in the caution-free race, followed by John Kalel II of Orrington and Donnie York of Thorndike. Drake and Kalel won the Super Street heat races.
Brent ‘Poochie’ Chase was declared the winner of the Wildcat feature race after apparent victor Andy Turbovsky of Winslow was penalized for rough driving on the final lap by the track’s racing director. Chase, who had run as high as second position during the closing laps, watched as Turbovsky dove low in turn four on the final lap as the drivers in first and second positions, Dustin Hubbard of Unity and Mo Young of Windsor, got together while trying to get to the checkered flag first.
‘Turbo’ got to the line in front of the pack, but the checkered flag was presented to Chase, who skillfully avoided the mayhem in front of him to earn his trip to victory lane. Luke Rickards of Anson and Benton’s Chet Hanscom claimed second and third-place hardware, with the top five rundown completed by Carl McAlpine of Burnham and Ed Sleeper of Vassalboro. The wild race also featured a flip off turn one that saw Nick Huff of Orrington gain several feet of altitude before landing in the sand atop the track’s first turn, following an incident also involving the race’s early leader, Chris King of Burnham. McAlpine won the Wildcat heat race.
Ben Clark of Clinton drove to victory in Late Model Pro Four main event action. Clark drove around former division champion Jimmy Dennis to claim his first victory in the class. Benton’s Dennis outran the balance of the field to take runner-up honors, ahead of Skowhegan’s Bryan Lancaster. Steve Rackliff of Starks and Corey Walker of Augusta rounded out the top five. Rackliff won the Late Model Pro Four heat race.
Kyle Gallant outgunned reigning track champion Mike Wilson Chelsea at the start of the Monsta Mini division main event and held off the Chelsea driver for the rest of the race. Dylan Lancaster of Skowhegan made up a lot of ground on the lead tandem late in the event, but had to settle for third-place honors after the checkered flag. Derrick Terrill of Plymouth and Scott Theriault of South China. Wilson won the Monsta Mini heat.
Mike Mason swept to victory twice, driving from the rear of the pack on both occasions, winning both a 30-lap, held-over feature and the regularly-scheduled main event for the Flyin’ 4 class.
In the first main event Jason Trundy of Old Town finished in second position, with Ryan Ripley of Waldoboro third. Tasha Dyer of Arowsic and Cody Sleeper of Augusta rounded out the top five.
Sleeper led several laps in the second main event before Mason went by for his second victory of the evening. Sleeper and Trundy finished in second and third positions, followed by Dylan Lancaster and Ripley. Trundy won the Flyin’ 4 heat race.
Shelby Kimball of Cornville helped her championship chances with a wire-to-wire victory over her chief rival in the Ladies point contest, Mika Wilson of Chelsea. Clinton’s Alica Goodwin picked up the third-place trophy, with top-five finishes also posted by Chelsea’s Carol Wilson and Danielle DeLuck of Hampden. Kimball also won the Ladies heat race.
Teen Thunder racer Bradley Bosworth won the battle three times Friday night, but a pair of top-five finishes wrapped up the 2009 division championship for Brooke Getchell of Pittsfield. The Teen Thunder class does not compete during the school year at Unity Raceway.
Bosworth’s first of two Teen Thunder feature race victories was in a held-over from a rain-shortened card from earlier in the season. Gage Landry finished in second position, followed by Matt Kimball. Getchell and Lucas Porter rounded out the top five.
Bosworth quickly got to the front of the regularly-scheduled Teen Thunder race and again outran Landry to the checkered flag. Daymon Dodge of Troy crossed the finish line in third position, followed by Kimball and Getchell. Bosworth won the Teen Thunder heat race.
The Enduro division was in the spotlight on this night, with a 50-lap race that saw Troy’s Daymon Dodge prevailing. Patrick Cook of Swanville and Ken Pelotte of Winslow grabbed second and third-place trophies, with the top five filled out by Chad Michaud of Fairfield and Jason Trundy of Old Town.
Preston, Connecticut teen Max Zachem drove from the rear of the starting lineup and got through traffic and into the lead just past the halfway point en route to victory in the 20-lap NELCAR Legends feature race. Topsham’s Bobby Weymouth chased Zachem from the back to the front and was the best of the rest in second position at the checkered flag. Tyler Jordan of Scarborough led the first ten laps before Zachem and Weymouth went by, then held on to post a third-place finish. Evan Beaulieu of Durham and Jim Manchester of Gorham rounded out the top five. Alan Smith of Lincoln and Zachem won the NELCAR Legends heat race.

Unity, ME – Henry Boudreau of Winterport drove to a popular win in the Enduro division at Unity Raceway Friday night before wet conditions and intermittent rain forced postponement of feature races for all other weekly division on Wresting &Racing Night, featuring NWA On Fire Professional Wrestling.
Boudreau, who a week earlier won his first-ever feature race after five seasons of competition, made it two straight victories in the Enduro division’s race. In his first victory a week earlier Boudreau started on the front row and led all the way to the checkered flag, but this time around it was more rewarding for the young Winterport racer, who started dead last and chased down Robert Paddack, who had a straightaway lead built by the time Boudreau had climbed into second position. To the delight of the crowd, Boudreau got the job done, with Paddack adding to his huge collection of second-place trophies after the checkered flag waved.
Highlighting the wrestling portion of the program, contested under moist conditions, was an upset victory by track promoter George Fernald, Jr. over legendary professional Wrestler Bob “Mr.” Backlund. Mike Reynolds of Brewer and Kenny Robinson of East Machias were triumphant in feature races for the visiting Wicked Good Vintage Racing Association.
Reynolds cruised to an easy win aboard his 1965 Chevrolet in the Wicked Good Late Model race. Rosie Gerry of Lincolnville claimed runner-up honors in his 1951 Ford, with third-place honors going to Norris wilette of Winslow, driving a 1956 Ford. Jason Smalley of Warren, driving a 1955 Chevrolet, finished in fourth position, followed by Kevin Waterhouse of West Paris, aboard a 1957 Ford Late Model.
Robinson’s victory came in the Wicked Good Outlaw division race, Robinson’s 1949 Plymouth-bodied Modified led much of the race, but the outcome was no certainty until just before the checkered flag flew. Mike Milette made a late charge into second position on the final lap, his 1940 Oldsmobile-bodied racer just edging out Dennis Fish of Livermore in his 1966 Chevy. Tim Reynolds of Bradley, in a 1941 Lincoln, and John Rice, driving a 1972 Ford Torino, completed the top five rundown.
Unity Raceway’s Flyin’ 4 division was scheduled to be featured with an extended-distance feature event which was among the rained-out races Friday night. That class did compete in a heat race won by Cody Sleeper of Chelsea. Skowehgan racers Justin Moore and Mike Mason had eventful runs to second and third-place finishes, respectively.
NELCAR Legends Cars join the weekly racing series divisions Friday night, August 28, with racing action getting underway at 6:30 p.m. The next Wrestling & Racing program featuring NWA On Fire professional werestling at Unity Raceway has been scheduled for Friday night, September 18. For more information visit unityraceway.info or call (207) 453-2021.

Unity, Maine – Fred Brown of Winterport outran all troubles developing behind him in a wild Late Model feature, topping the Friday night racing card at Unity Raceway. Steve Rackliff of Starks and Bradley Bosworth of Clinton each won a pair of feature races, with other victories posted by Glenburn’s Steve Moulton, Unity’s Dustin Hubbard, Veazie’s Kyle Gallant, Skowhegan’s Justin Moore, Molly Feeney of Hope and Henry Boudreau of Winterport.
Friday night at the fights is scheduled for August 21st, but the top-tier Late Model racers took the gloves off even before the green flag flew. Joe Allard and Joey Doyon were done for the night before a lap could be completed, then later in the event point leader Frank Moulton had his car destroyed in an altercation which produced a black flag for David Folsom II. That incident took place just a handful of laps after Folsom and Moulton got together, with Folsom spinning from the lead.
Fred ‘Pee Wee’ Brown took charge of the Late Model main event after Folsom’s demise and drove to victory lane in his first appearance behind the wheel of a stock car this season. Phil Richardson of Carmel, who finally cured mechanical demons that had plagued him in his previous Unity Raceway appearances, dove to an impressive second-place finish, with early leader Picard claiming the final podium position. Ajay Picard of Palmyra finished fourth, with Jerry Robbins, Jr. of Montville rounding out the top five. Moulton won the heat race.
Steve Moulton took the lead from semi-teammate Kris Watson of Hermon and held on to the top spot for the balance of an extremely-competitive Super Street division main event. Vassalboro’s Ed ‘Fubby’ Drake overcame a couple of apparent miscues to take second away from Watson, who did hold on for third-place laurels. Shaun Austin of Norridgewock came from the back of the pack three times to finish fourth, while Orrington’s John Kalel II was fifth under the checkered flag. Austin claimed the heat race victory.
Unity’s Dustin Hubbard, the reigning division champion, took advantage of a front row starting position and romped to victory by a wide margin in the Wildcat feature race. Frankfort’s Bobby Seger drove from the rear of the field to second position early in the race, easily holding on to that spot despite being unable to chase down the hometown teenager. Burnham’s Brent Chase raced hard to claim the third-place trophy. Chris King of Burnham finished fourth, followed by Luke Rickards of Anson. Hubbard scored in hear race action.
The Late Model Pro Four class had a pair of feature races, the first a 30-lap double-pointer held over from a rain-shortened card earlier this season. Steve Rackliff of Starks won both main events.
The first Pro Four feature was a thriller right down to the wire, with Rackliff just edging past Benton wheelman Jimmy Dennis under Bo Overlock’s checkered flag. Rackliff led, just about the final five feet of the 10-mile contest. Bryan Lancaster of Skowhegan filled the show position in the opener, with the top-five filled out by Corey Walker and Ben Nile.
Rackliff’s second score of the evening came after he prevailed in a long and spirited match-up with eventual runner-up Norm Cummings, Jr. of Augusta. Walker finished third to wrap up his 33rd birthday. Lancaster and Clinton’s Tim Robinson completed the top five rundown. Robinson claimed the checkered flag in the heat race.
Justin Moore outran Augusta’s Cody Sleeper to win the Flyin’ 4 feature event. Skowhegan’s Mike Mason drove from the back of the field into the lead in the race, but spun in front of the field in speedy-dri laid down for fluids spread on the racetrack earlier in the event. Moore lost a lap as a result of the spin, but put on a show charging from the back once again to pass all but the first two finishers in the closing laps, finishing eighth. Skowhegan’s Jordan Hawes picked up third-place spoils ahead of Sidney’s Nick Lizotte and Chris Williams of Oakland. Moore and Mason won the heat races.
Molly Feeney of Hope prevailed in Ladies division competition. Feeney held off all challengers following a restart after she inherited the lead from Mika Wilson, who spun off the backstretch trying to hold off the challenges of Feeney and Shelby Kimball. Wilson charged from the back of that restart lineup to finish in second position, with Bucksport’s Kayla Allen’s aggressive drive netting a third-place finish. Samantha Letourneau bounced back from a wild ride into an infield sand trap to finish in fourth position. Carol Wilson, Mika’s mom, was fifth at the line.
Bradley Bosworth swept Teen Thunder feature event action, and won the heat race to complete the trifecta. Like the Late Model Pro Fours, the kiddy class kicked things off with a previously-postponed double-point race, followed by a heat race and their regularly-scheduled main event.
Cole Robinson of Clinton and Gage Landry of Sidney claimed second and third positions in the first race, with fourth and fifth going to Cornville’s Matt Kimball and Brooke Getchell of Pittsfield.
Landry, Getchell, Daymon Dodge of Troy and Robinson filled out the top-five in the regularly-scheduled feature race.
Henry Boudreau led wire-to-wire in the Enduro race closing out the night’s action. It was a career-first trophy dash victory for the happy Winterport driver.

Unity, Maine — Burnham racers Frank Moulton and Carl McAlpine took different routes to victory lane, but both were on top of the official order of finish after double-point, 50-lap features, topping the Champions Appreciation Day racing card Sunday afternoon at Unity Raceway.
Moulton extended his lead in the Late Model division championship standings with his victory. Though he started on the front row and led the vast majority of the 50 laps, Moulton did not go unchallenged, and in fact yielded the top spot briefly on a couple of occasions to Winterport’s Joey Doyon, who roared from the back of the field into contention until electrical woes eliminated him from contention with ten laps to go. Palmyra racers Ajay and Louie Picard also challenged Moulton briefly following restarts, but the point leader prevailed. Ajay Picard finished in second position, with David Folsom II of Skowhegan claiming third-place spoils. Louie Picard was fourth, followed by Dylan Turner of Freedom. Moulton also won the heat race.
Defending Wildcat division champion McAlpine actually crossed the line in second position after a racelong battle with Winslow’s Andy Turbovsky, who has been his chief obstacle when it has come to dominating victory lane in the class. Turbovsky got to the checkered flag first, but the win was negated in post-race technical inspection for a carburetor violation. Apparent third-place finisher Mike St.Germaine of Auburn also ran afoul of the inspectors. In the official order of finish it became a podium sweep for Burnham racers, with McAlpin e getting the victory ahead of Brent Chase and Chris King. Luke Rickards of Anson and Ed Sleeper of Vassalboro. King was the first legal car across the finish line in the heat race.
The touring NELCAR Legends were on hand, and Max Zachem of Preston, Connecticut drove from the rear of the grid into the lead at the halfway point of a 20-lap feature race, then went on to win convincingly. Windham teenager Bobby Timmons put on a strong performance en route to a second-place finish. Topsham’s Bobby Weymouth claimed the third-place trophy. Tyler Jordan of Scarborough, who led the first half of the maine event, ended up with a fourth-place finish, followed by Lincoln’s Alan Smith. Terry Kirk, Kendall Curit, Ed Getty, Foret Boucher and Evan Beaulieu rounded out the top ten, followed by Brandon Ingalls and Tyler Braunschweig.
Brian Janik drove from the rear to the front to win the Wicked Good Vintage Race Car Association feature race. Bob Hill finished second, with Keith Fuller, Jr in third position. 70-year-old former track champion Dick McPhail led the first half of the race before yielding to the top three, driving under the checkered flag in fourth place. Norris Willette finished in fifth position.
David Folsom I of Skowhegan outran Madsion’s Mike Moore and George Fernald III of Benton in the Enduro race.
“Fernald Frenzy” special events were a part of Champions Appreciation Day, which also featured an on-track pit party where champions like Hall of Famer Blackie Hilliard – one of Unity Raceway’s earliest champions – was honored, as was the youngest champion on hand, current Late Model Pro Four competitor Ben Nile, a recent champion of the track’s Teen Thunder division.
The ‘Frenzy’ special events were capped by a Minivan Demolition Derby won by Skowhegan’s David Folsom II. Benton’s George Fernald III was the best of the rest, with the third-place trophy going to Justin Moore of Madison.
The always-entertaining Ramp Race was won by David Folsom I, in front of Shadow Folsom and Mike Moore.
David Folsom I of Skowhegan bested Lance Chapman of Benton in a best of three final in the Race Your Neighbor event, featuring street-legal passenger cars squaring off, one-on-one. Folsom drove his wife’s Impala to victory lane, thanked her, and told her from victory lane that she could have the $160 prize.
Lance Chapman and Samantha Letourneau won the Jack & Jill race, which needs to be seen to be understood. Cody Sleeper and Mika Wilson teamed up to finish second, ahead of Ben Nile and his young partner.
Chapman and Letourneau went on to provide the biggest crowd thrill of the day when they crashed in spectacular fashion during the Bag Race. After a red flag period prompted by that incident, Justin Moore and David Folsom II teamed up to win the event in front of Shadow Folsom and George Fernald III.
And Fast Freddy Landry was best in the Longest Ramp Jump competition, beating out the event’s most recent champion, Mike Moore.
Weekly competition resumes with all nine regular classes in action beginning at 6:30 p.m. on Friday night. August 21 Unity Raceway hosts NWA on Fire Wrestling & Racing, with a full professional wrestling card and nin feature races scheduled. Unity, Maine – Third-generation racer Josh St. Clair of Liberty picked up his third Late Model feature win, topping the Friday night racing card at Unity Raceway. Benton’ Jimmy Dennis prevailed in a special, 50-lap main event for the Late Model Pro Four division, and Mike Mason of Skowhegan scored a pair of feature race triumphs in the Flyin’ 4 division.
Shaun Austin of Norridgewock, Andy Turbovsky of Winslow, Bob Grady of Pittston, Molly Feeney of Hope and the young Cornville sibling tandem of Shelby and Matt Kimball also visited victory lane on a busy night of stock car racing action.
In the Late Model main event, Josh St.Clair took the lead away from point leader Frank Moulton of Burnham, then held off his father, Puncin St..Clair en route to victory lane. The runner-up finish was the elder St.Clair’s first appearance in the top class at Unity Raceway this season. Sidney’s Chris Thorne, also making his first appearance at the track this season, claimed third-place hardware in the hotly-contested 30-lap race. Moulton ended up finishing in fourth position, with Anson’s Mark Dodge rounding out the top five. Josh St. Clair also won the heat race.
“Wheelman” Jimmy Dennis of Benton scored in the longest race of the night, and of the season for the Late Model Pro Four class. Dennis swapped the lead with Skowhegan’s Bryan Lancaster after many restarts before pulling away to claim the checkered flag. Lancaster cruised to second-place honors, with young Ben Nile of Anson coming back after extensive repair work in the pit area to claim the final podium finishing position. Augusta racers Norm Cummings, Jr. and Shane Smith were fourth and fifth under the checkered flag. Lancaster won the heat race.
Shaun Austin’s triumph came in a wild Super Street main event in which even the winning driver was involved in a couple of on-track altercations. Ed ‘Fubby’ Drake of Vassalboro made things interesting right up until the checkered flag waved, and finished in second position. Donnie York of Thorndike celebrated his birthday with a third-place finish in the night’s most competitive feature race. Stvee Moulton of Glenburn led the race early, but had to settle for a fourth-place finish. John Kalel II of Orrington was the fifth-place finisher. York won the heat race.
Andy Turbovsky’s victory was the result of a late charge from behind in the Wildcat division main event.. ‘Turbo’ just managed to edge out hometown Unity competitor Dustin Hubbard, whose second-place finish snapped a long string of mechanical misfortune that had cut several nights short for the teenager. Brent Chase of Burnham prevailed in a racelong battle for third with reigning division champion Carl McAlpine. Shawn Racilla of Dover-Foxcroft completed the top-five rundown. Turbovsky also aced the heat race.
Bob Grady of Pittston led all the way in the Monsta Mini feature event, stopping a long winning streak posted by reigning division champion and current point leader Mike Wilson of Chelsea. Paul Jackson of Augusta returned to competition with a fine second-place feature performance, while Wilson bounced back from a first-lap altercation that saw him fly off turn three to finish third. Clinton’s Tim Robinson, who went for the wild ride along with Wilson, crossed the line in fourth position, with Alica Goodwin of Clinton fifth under the checkered flag. Wilson won the heat race.
The first of two main event wins for Mike Mason came in a double-point race postponed by rain earlier this season after nine of the scheduled 30 laps had been completed. Cody Sleeper of Chelsea was the best of the rest in the lidlifter, with Skowhegan’s Justin Moore claiming the third-place trophy. Shadow Folsom of Skowhegan and Tim Robinson of Clinton were the fourth and fifth-place finishers.
In the nightcap, Mason raced to victory lane in front of Moore, with Jordan Hawes of Skowhegan running a great race to post the third-place finish. Tim Robinson of Clinton and Mike Landry of Oakland filled out the top five. Mason and Moore were hear race winners.
Ladies division competitors also raced in a pair of main events, with Molly Feeney of Hope scoring in the held-over, double-point special postponed from earlier in the season. Alica Goodwin of Clinton made a late charge to take second position away from Cornville’s Shelby Kimball at the line. Kayla Allen of Bucksport and Mika Wilson of Chelsea rounded out the top five.
Shelby Kimball won the regularly-scheduled Ladies feature event, in front of Feeney, Goodwin, Allen and Becky Elston of Carmel. Feeney took top honors in the heat race.
Young Matt Kimball scored a last-lap victory by inches in the Teen Thunder race. Kimball’s late charge was set up by a last-lap altercation involving Cornville’s Bradley Bosworth and Gage Landry of Sidney as they battled for the race lead through slower lapped traffic.. Bosworth limped to a second-place finish on a flat right front tire, with Lucas Porter of Norridgewock third under the checkered flag. Brooke Getchell of Pittsfield finished in fourth position, followed by Troy’s Damon Dodge. Porter won the heat race.
Patrick Cook of Brooks ran to a wire-to-wire victory in the Enduro finale. Henry Boudreau of Winterport claimed runner-up honors, with Travis Dodge getting by Mike Shaw on the final lap to pick up the third-place trophy.
Racing continues Sunday (August 9) with a special Champions Appreciation Day program honoring the best of the past and present at Unity Raceway. Racing in several division is planned, along with a Mini Van Demolition Derby. Post time is 1:30 p.m. For more information call (207) 453-2021 or visit unityraceway.info

Naples ME ( 8/3/2009) Scott McDaniel looked high and low for a way around race leader Gary Norris in Sundays’ 40 lap Pro All Stars Series (PASS) Mod feature at Unity (ME) Raceway, and when the white flag unfurled the young racer from Livermore Falls Maine found a way by Norris to capture his first PASS Mod series feature win. McDaniel looked like he had the car to beat from the get go and gave the fans plenty to watch as he tried the outside and inside lines on Norris. It was tight clean racing at its best for the full 40 laps as the pair battled for the win.
Norris hung on to second and Bill Dixon raced home third. Point leader Andy Shaw suffered damage on the first lap when the front of the field checked up and retired, finishing last.
McDaniel is the second new PASS Mod winner in as many races. Sulo Burbank captured his first victory at Riverside Speedway on July 25th.Burbank recorded a fourth place finish at Unity, followed by Scott Grant in fifth. Heat races went to Dan Somes and Andy Shaw.
Shane Tatro has to have taken a liking to Unity Raceway. The Levant Maine PASS Sportsman regular has two wins in the series; his first coming in a shoot out with Dan McKeage in the series’ May appearance at the speedway, and the second came Sunday when he beat Lyman McKeage and his son Dan McKeage to the line in the 75 lap PASS Sportsman portion of the NAPA 150 card. Carey Martin stayed alive in the point race by finishing fourth and Duane Seekins rounded out the top five.
Mike Landry looked like a winner with less than ten laps to go. Landry and Tatro dueled all race long, with Tatro out front until Landry used the high line to take over on lap 53. Landry appeared to have the measure of Tatro, but the lead was never more than a car length or two. During that lap 53 caution period the telltale smell of gear oil was in evidence, and it proved to be coming from the rear end of the leader’s ride. Landry dropped into the infield with seven to go, and Tatro cruised to another PASS victory lane visit at Unity. Landry and Tatro each won a qualifying round.
The PASS Mods and Sportsman share the limelight at Groveton New Hampshire’s Riverside Speedway on Saturday August 16th. For more information on the speedway visit www.riversidespeedway.org . The Pro All Stars are on line at www.racewithpass.com or www.proallstarsseries.com .

Turner Topples PASS regulars at Unity
Naples ME (8/3/2009) Randy Turner drove by Scott Chubbuck on lap 117 of Sunday afternoon’s Pro All Stars Series (PASS) NAPA 150 at Unity (ME) Raceway, taking the lead for good to capture his first career Pro All Stars Series (PASS) super late model feature win. DJ Shaw came from the back of the field to nip Ben Rowe for second at the checker. Rowe settled for third and Chubbuck slipped to fourth; Richie Dearborn rounded out the top five.
Unity Raceway lived up to its name and Maine’s Toughest Oval served up an afternoon of side by side racing along with a few spectacular wrecks for those unlucky enough to get out of bounds at the tricky third mile oval.
The first half of the show belonged to Louis Mechalides, Turner, Chubbuck and Kelly Moore, with Mechalides, urner and Chubbuck swapping the lead on several restarts and racing hard for the top spot. That was the way they raced until a lap 107 restart when Chubbuck and Mechalides gave each other a shove or two, resulting in a broken suspension and retirement for Mechalide’s 1C Cat Scales ride.
That left Turner and Chubbuck, two drivers with plenty of Unity experience, to battle it out. Turner has been chasing a Pro All Stars win whenever the series visits his home track and he came close in May, finishing third and running up front throughout the race. This time around he wouldn’t be denied. Turner’s win was a first for the Toyota name plate in PASS North competition, and it’s the first feature win for a non series regular since Joey Porceillo scored at Beech Ridge in May of 2007. Turner is the seventh different driver to visit PASS super late model victory lane this season, joining Chris Staples as a first time feature winner.
Staples didn’t fare so well this day, taking a lazy roll in the mud off turn one. He was uninjured. Wrecks slowed title contenders Adam Bates (11th) and Derek Ramstrom (19th). The race was slowed by seven cautions and one red flag period. Heat race wins went to Turner, Mechalides, and Gary Smith.
The PASS North super late models have a week off before heading south to Seekonk (MA) Speedway when Cirelli Foods presents the PASS 150 on Saturday August 15th. The race marks the series’ first visit to the track that invented super late model (nee pro stock) racing, and the first Bay State appearance in the Pro All Stars Series’ nine year history. It’s a trip to the Cement Palace that can’t be missed. Race time is 6:00 PM; Seekonk Speedway’s web site can be found at www.seekonkspeedway.com .

Naples ME (7/28/2009) Unity Raceway hosts the Pro All Stars Series (PASS) this Sunday August 2nd and the ticket price is a throwback to the days when all race cars were built from a junkyard and gas was less than a buck a gallon.
Thanks to NAPA and PASS, two adults can see 150 laps of PASS super late model racing, 40 laps for the PASS Mods and a 75 lap PASS Sportsman feature for just ten bucks each. That’s right, the two- for- one NAPA coupons from the Fathers Day rainout will be honored , this week’s edition of the Racin’ Paper has a two- for- one coupon and coupons are still available at most northern New England NAPA stores.
The PASS Sportsman have been on hiatus since the May race at Unity and those teams are anxious to get back on track at Maine’s toughest oval. Dan McKeage sits atop the Sportsman standing by twelve points over Carey Martin, with Mike Landry Shane Tatro and Lyman McKeage in spots three through five. McKeage, Martin and Tatro each have a race win under their belts, and Tatro earned his last time out at Unity in a wild finish that might just be topped on Sunday.
Andy Shaw started a three race PASS Mod win streak at Unity and the Center Conway NH speedster is atop the Mod standings. Steve Bennett Jr., Scott Grant and Bill Dixon are all chasing Shaw, and Sulo Burbank will be looking for a second straight win after scoring his first at Riverside Speedway on July 25th.
The PASS North super late models roll back into Unity for some more wide open side by side action Pro All Stars style; the fast full bodied racers are perfectly suited to the Unity oval, a track that lets you put down the horsepower and race three wide when the need arises. Johnny Clark was victorious in May but Scott Chubbuck, Randy Turner, Kelly Moore, Travis Benjamin and DJ Shaw were all strong last time out so the competition will be fierce.
Practice gets underway at noon and the first heat takes the green at 3:00 PM sharp. For more information, race results and point standings visit www.racewithpass.com or www.proallstarsseries.com . Unity Raceway is on line at www.unityraceway.info .
Unity, ME — Josh St. Clair of Liberty drove to victory lane twice in one day for the second time this season on a special Saturday afternoon “Wrestling & Racing” card at Unity Raceway, offering up double points in all racing divisions.
St.Clair came from the back of the pack in both the Late Model and Super Street division main events in impressive fashion.
In the Late Model event St.Clair worked his way through the field to take command just past the halfway point in the race, getting by early race leader Frank Moulton of Burnham. Moulton, the current leader in the battle for the 2009 track championship, managed to hold off Palmyra’s Louie Picard, making his first Unity Raceway appearance of the season, for runner-up honors. Picard crossed the line in third position, with the top five filled out by Anson’s Mark Dodge and David Folsom II of Skowhegan.
St.Clair’s Super Street victory saw the third-generation racer chase down Orrington’s John Kalel II to earn his first trip to victory lane on the afternoon. Ed ‘Fubby’ Drake of Vassalboro chased St.Clair throughout the 35-lapper and drove to a second-place finish, his. Donnie York of Thorndike made a late charge pay off with a third-place finish, in front of Kalel and Steve Moulton of Glenburn.
Reigning division champion Carl McAlpine of Burnham led every lap en route to victory lane in the Wildcat class. Ed Sleeper of Vassalboro posted his best finish in the division, moving into second position on the final lap. Chet Hanscom of Benton, who challenged McAlpine’s lead for much of the race, got entangled with a lapped car on the final lap and had to settle for a third-place finish. Chris King of Burnham and Shawn Racila of Dover-Foxcroft rounded out the top five.
Reigning Monsta Mini division champion Mike Wilson of Chelsea cruised to victory in the 25-lap, double-point main event for his division. Mike Dulaney of Richmond tried to make things interesting in the closing laps to earn runner-up honors. Tim Robinson of Clinton ended up with the third-place trophy. Alicia Goodwin of Clinton finished fourth, with the top-five rundown filled out by Jason Forbes of Castle Hill.
Lance Chapman returned after a few weeks off and dominated the Enduro division race on the track. He lapped everyone with the exception of apparent runner-up Travis Dodge. But post-race inspection uncovered rules violations on the two quickest cars, which made Chad Badger of Milo the official winner.
Rain showers forced postponement of features in four racing divisions. The Flyin’ 4 and Ladies divisions will race in double-point features to kick off this Friday night’s (July 31) racing program, while Late Model Pro Four and Teen Thunder division features will be made up on August 7.
This Friday night is also Christmas in July, with a visit from Santa and other kids activities scheduled. Post time is 6:30 p.m. For more information visit unityraceway.info or call (207) 453-2021.
