Ryan Blaney Dominates for First Career PASS South Win

Naples, ME 3/15/10- Fans who have followed the PASS South series for the last year and a half have all wondered and even asked him to his face, “Ryan when are you going to win your first race?” That question along with a statement on who might be the guy to beat for the 2010 PASS South series championship was answered in front of a stellar crowd at the Dillon Motor Speedway in Dillon, South Carolina as fifteen-year-old Ryan Blaney stole the show and earned the win, dominating the South Carolina Clash 150.

The youngster bested the thirty-four cars all day during practice and then backed it up in Pro Photo Productions qualifying, setting the fastest time over the thirty-one cars that took time. With the large field in attendance, PASS officials were forced to have a last chance race for those who did not lock themselves in by qualifying inside the top twenty. Kernersville, North Carolina driver Duane Linville led from start to finish ensuring himself a spot in the night’s 150 lap main event.

The first forty laps proved to be the most exciting as cars sliced and diced for position after the series’ mandatory top ten qualifying redraw. The biggest mishap of the night came on lap thirteen when multiple cars went spinning, including top runners Jay Fogleman, Preston Peltier, and Dylan Presnell after the #79 of Chris Bowers didn’t quite get up to speed on a restart, causing the field to stack up. Most of the cars in the incident were able to continue after minor repairs to their machines. The final caution of the night came just thirty-eight laps into the 150 lap event but it was lap forty-eight that was the lap to remember for Ryan Blaney as he took the lead when Georgia’s Justin Wakefield went up in smoke with motor trouble.

While the difference between first and second was over fifteen seconds, the battle between local favorite Hal Goodson, Steve Legendre, and Preston Peltier, who ran second most of the night after working his way back through the field, was quite interesting. As the leader, Blaney, was taking the checkered flag coming out of four just a car length behind the three drivers battling for position, Peltier slowed on the back straightaway as if the race was over while Goodson and Legendre raced back to complete their final lap since the three never went a lap down. Goodson managed the runner up spot while Legendre scored his career best PASS finish of third leaving Peltier in the fourth position at the line. Spencer Wauters made it back to back fifth place finishes as he rounded out the top five for the second consecutive season.

Next up for the Pro All Stars Series will be the “Easter Bunny 150” at the Hickory Motor Speedway on Saturday April 3rd. The event will double as both a PASS South and PASS National point race making the chances of huge car count an easy possibility. For more information on the event or any PASS events visit their website at www.proallstarsseries.com.

ICEBREAKER- FIRST STEP TOWARDS 2010 THOMPSON CHAMPIONSHIPS.

THOMPSON,CT. The season-opening Icebreaker, April 10th and 11th, at the Thompson International Speedway kicks off the racing season and the drive for a coveted division championship at the historic speedway. In all, six NASCAR Whelen All-American Series division titles are up for grabs for Thompson’s weekly racers. The historic speedway is also the location where many other championships like the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour, NEMA Midgets, ISMA Super Modifieds and others are traditionally decided at the end of the racing season.

Race teams look to the Icebreaker to kick start their season. Many feel that a good finish in this event will lead to a successful racing season. Keith Rocco, the 2009 Sunoco Modified champion began his chase for the title with a win at last year’s Icebreaker. The record book shows the same for Thompson Modified driver and champion Brian Sullivan. Super Late Model driver, Derek Ramstrom began his march to that division’s championship with a top five finish as did Late Model titlist John Materas and Limited Sportsman champ, Larry Barnett. The only exception to this pattern was Mini Stock title winner Scott Michalski. After a dismal Icebreaker weekend, Michalski went on a tear and won the title by a 58 points advantage.

Every race team will have an opportunity to fine tune their race cars before the Icebreaker. The track has scheduled two open practice sessions leading up to the April 10th and 11th Icebreaker weekend. The track will open the pit gates at 10 AM on the mornings of March 27th and again on April 3rd. The track will be race ready when the cars begin their “round robin” practice sessions at 11 AM. A full six hours on each day have been set aside expressly for this purpose.

Each year, race fans can’t wait for the racing season to begin. The long New England winters are soon forgotten when the roar of the engines fill the air. The heated competition does its part as well as fans, who have waited since October, return to watch their racing heroes do wheel-to-wheel battle on the ultra-fast Thompson track.

Headlining the Icebreaker weekend will be the NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour with their season opener, a 150-lap main event. They will be joined by Thompson’s own “Super 6” NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions. Racers will practice and qualify their cars on Saturday, April 10th. Each division will run its feature event on Sunday beginning at 12 Noon. As a bonus, race fans will get to see the Sunoco Modifieds and the Super Late Model divisions compete in feature event races on both Saturday evening and again on Sunday.

Tickets for the Icebreaker are available by calling the Thompson track office. (860-923-2280). The very latest information and the detailed Icebreaker race schedule are available on the Thompson web page. www.thompsonspeedway.com

SÃO PAULO, Brazil – Will Power overtook Ryan Hunter-Reay in Turn 11 on Lap 58 of 61 to win the rain-shortened IZOD IndyCar Series season opener, the inaugural Sao Paulo Indy 300 on the Streets of Sao Paulo, Brazil.

Power, driving the No. 12 Verizon Team Penske car, won by 1.8581 seconds. Vitor Meira was third, followed by Raphael Matos, Dan Wheldon and Scott Dixon. PEAK Pole Award winner Dario Franchitti, who claimed the pole earlier in the day, finished seventh.

Power and Meira suffered 2009 season-ending injuries (Power in August, Meira in May), and both wound up on the podium in their first race back in the series.

The race was red-flagged for 36 minutes after a thunderstorm swept over the Anhembi section of the city, and it became a timed race. It was also the first time that an IZOD IndyCar Series event held qualifying and race on the same day.

SAO PAULO INDY 300 POST-RACE QUOTES:

WILL POWER (No. 12 Verizon Team Penske, winner Sao Paulo Indy 300): “It was probably the most mixed up race that I have ever been in, but it created an opportunity for me to come back through the field and end up winning the race. The improvements that they did to the track last night, were like night and day. Not a problem at all going down the frontstraight. I think it is just a really good day for racing. If you were fast you could pass, because there is such a good track layout here. I’m pretty sure it was an exciting race for the fans.

RYAN HUNTER-REAY (No. 37 Team IZOD, finished second): “It is great to have a race in Brazil. This has been a long time coming. The country and the fans are so passionate about racing. It’s great to do it here. And that was a great show we put on. That’s what we need on these street circuit and road courses is a lot of passing like that. We definitely have the tools to do it. We have two straightaways that were pretty long and provided pretty good passing zones. The only shame about the whole race is that it went red for some puddles because there were a lot of big dips out there and our cars hydroplane pretty easily. It would have been great to get some good rain racing in. Maybe next year we will fill in those things and see where it goes. It was just great to get the IZOD car up on the podium in second place to start of the season.

VITOR MEIRA (No. 14 ABC Supply Co./A.J. Foyt Racing, finished third): “It couldn’t be much better than that. I think Will (Power) can relate to it with a back injury and all that, it gets pretty uncertain at some times and having a team behind you making sure that the seat is availble, makes a big difference during the recovery. This is the start of the big thank you I have to give to A.J. (Foyt) and ABC Supply. I hope we get better. We overcame a lot here. Like Will said before, it was a mixed up race. I think whether you were able to keep your nose clean and were fast enough to make up position in all conditions, you could come out with a good result and that’s what we did.

RAPHAEL MATOS (No. 2 HP Luczo Dragon Racing, finished fourth): “It was a long and very physical day, but I’m very proud of the HP team, especially with our pit stops. They did a great job. We all feel good about the fourth place finish. We wanted the podium, but we started 12th and made a lot of progress. This week was like a dream come true racing in my home country and in front of my friends and family. There was a lot of tension and pressure but we kept everything together and brought the car home. It was extremely important to finish this race and to get my best finish in Brazil was very rewarding.

DAN WHELDON (No. 4 National Guard Panther Racing, finished fifth): “It’s really great for all of us at Panther Racing to start the season with a top-five, but first I have to apologize for taking Tag (Alex Tagliani) and TK (Tony Kanaan) out of the race. Tag had a bit of a bobble coming onto the straight and I got a really good run; he defended a little bit and I was going to look to the inside, but decided to pull in just a touch, and when I braked I hit a really big bump and it just lifted my front wheels off the ground. When that happens you can’t stop. That was a really good effort from the National Guard boys, and I think it goes to show that we work really hard as a group, and the continuity around here has been really strong, and I’m sure it will continue. If we keep coming in the Top Five we’re going to break into Victory Lane. We were really strong today – the car was really nice to drive and I was able to dive down inside people. It was an exciting race, and it’s going to be an exciting IZOD IndyCar Series season.”

SCOTT DIXON (No. 9 Target Chip Ganassi Racing, finished sixth): “It was a very tough race. I’m proud of the Target Team for rebounding after the accident at the start. I’ll take this any day especially after the start we had last year in St. Petersburg.”

DARIO FRANCHITTI (No. 10 Target Chip Ganassi Racing, finished seventh): “If I had my crystal ball it would have been easier. We get it right quite often here at Team Target but we had a lot of unknowns with the weather. We played it as best we could, so I can’t be too disappointed.”

MARIO ROMANCINI ( No. 34 Conquest Racing): “I learned a lot this weekend. Everything was new to me and we experienced some difficulties, preventing us from running as much as we would have liked each session. Things improved during the race after the first pit stop and we were doing great lap times. We were running competitively until the rain came. After the restart that we were a lap down and I was working to improve my position when I caught some water on the curb and lost the car. Unfortunately the race was over for us there. Now we have to turn the page and look forward to the St. Petersburg race, using the things that we learned here this weekend.”

SIMONA DE SILVESTRO (No. 78 Team Stargate Worlds/HVM): “Despite the rear braking problems and the different things that happened during the race, it was a real good experience. I think we can be pretty competitive during the year, and now we just have to continue to work real hard. I’m sure we’ll go in the right direction. A big thank you to my Team Stargate Worlds/HVM Racing crew for working so hard and to everyone who had a part in getting me to this point. I am very grateful to them all”

TONY KANAAN (No. 11 Team 7-Eleven): “The weekend could have been better; but on the positive side the whole 7-Eleven team did a great job on stops and we had a fast car. Unfortunately, we had to pay for the mistakes of others. It happens. I don’t think it was on purpose and I believe I’ve made mistakes like that before. It’s a shame it had to happen here in Brazil, in my hometown. I enjoyed the weekend, I enjoyed the crowd and I enjoyed the racing. My car was really good. I had the fastest lap of the race and I passed cars right up until the last corner. That’s the positive. The negative is that I’d love to be on the podium right now with the Brazilian flag.”

DANICA PATRICK (No. 7 Team GoDaddy.com): “I think the weekend started really tough for the No. 7 car and then we made a lot of progress at the end of the first practice day and that was really good. I’m proud of everyone for staying together and forging ahead instead of getting down. We missed the setup a bit in qualifying, but for the race I think my engineer (Eddie Jones) got the downforce right and my car was really good. We made it up to eighth and were making passes happen. Then when the rain started not everyone came in right away and we gambled on staying out. I mean, you’ve got to try and win the race. The front half of the track was wet and I locked up going into Turns 1 and 2, but worst off the car stalled. At the end of the day I think the GoDaddy.com car is going to be strong this year and the team overall is a lot stronger than we’ve been. It was a good first out for us.

E.J. VISO (No. 8 PDVSA-Jet Aviation-KVRT): “It was definitely a tough race for the PDVSA – KVRT team. The circumstances were very weird, we had a lot of rain, no rain, problems with the track and a lot of accidents but in the end we did what we set out to do and finish the race and get some points. I am looking forward to St. Petersburg and believe this is just the start of a good championship.

TAKUMA SATO (No. 5 KV Racing Technology): “After yesterday’s practice session, we knew a lot of work had to be done. The KV Racing Technology team did a great job in coming together this morning and I was able to improve my lap time by quite a lot. I felt a lot more comfortable than yesterday and very happy that we recovered well during qualifying however I was very disappointed with the start of the race. It was very packed and there was a lot of dust. Unfortunately I got caught up in an accident in Turn One, it was not a good memory for my first IZOD IndyCar race, but seeing E.J. (Viso) finish solid and the KVRT team working well together makes me feel overall that we have learned a lot and I look forward to my next race in St. Petersburg, Florida.

MARIO MORAES (No. 32 KV Racing Technology): “It was a disappointing day for me and the Panamericano-KV Racing Technology team. The start was very dusty and drivers in front of me were braking early into Turn One. By the time I realized it was about 500 metres into the corner and when I applied the brakes I lost the rear and hit another car ending my race on the first lap.”

HIDEKI MUTOH (No. 06 Newman/Haas/Lanigan Racing): “It was a disappointing race for the Formula Dream / Panasonic team. We had moved up as high as sixth, and when I was in seventh I went into the marbles in Turn 3 and couldn’t turn the car and many cars passed me while I was sliding everywhere. Then I almost hit Vitor (Meira), who was fighting with another car. Vitor slowed so I had to brake harder and lost the back end and had nowhere to go. They were my mistakes. We have to move on and focus on having a good weekend in St. Pete.”

MARCO ANDRETTI (No. 26 Team Venom Energy): “It’s obviously dusty. I think if you have any common sense, you’re not going to stay flat out if you can’t see the car ahead of you. I don’t know, I got hit from behind.”

HUDSON, N.H. — The old adage tells us that consistency wins championships, and Joey Polewarczyk Jr. hopes he can prove it true once again in 2010.

The 20-year-old stock car driver will have plenty of chances to find consistency on the track, committing to run the full ACT Late Model Tour season this year as well as a partial NASCAR K&N Pro Series East schedule. Polewarczyk, who owns four career ACT wins and finished a career-best fourth in the final 2009 standings, is looking forward to getting back behind the wheel.

“It’s going to be a busy summer, for sure,” Polewarczyk said. “I’m excited about it. It’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Polewarczyk started making waves for himself last June when he beat two-time Sprint Cup Series champion Tony Stewart — plus a full field of Late Models — in the Vermont Governor’s Cup at Thunder Road International Speedbowl in Barre, Vt. But as good a season as Polewarczyk had, it was his offseason that’s been even more productive.

Polewarczyk and his family-owned No. 97 team have joined the Ford Racing family, sporting a new powerplant and body as he enters his fifth full season of ACT competition.

“I really want to focus on doing this ACT deal,” Polewarczyk said. “If I do really well with Ford this year, there’s no telling what kind of opportunities it could lead to with them.”

Conversations with Ford began near the end of last season. Polewarczyk said he’s been impressed with the manufacturer’s foray into crate engines at the short-track racing level, debuting with a lone team in 2009. Cris Michaud ran Ford engines in ACT Late Model Tour and Thunder Road weekly division races throughout the year.

“It seems like it’s a lot better engine than the GM engine,” Polewarczyk said. “We couldn’t pass it up.

“It’s awesome to be with such a great company like Ford — it’s the only company that didn’t take the (federal) bailout, and it’s nice to be working with a good company like that that. Our goal is to win the (ACT) championship. Hopefully we’ll get a couple wins along the way and do the best we can for Ford’s name.”

To win, Polewarczyk knows, he’s got to avoid the midsummer stretch that plagued him in 2009. After a fast start to the year, his results fell off following the Vermont Governor’s Cup victory. He’d like to have better consistency this time around.

“Every track you get to, you have to have a top-10,” said Polewarczyk. “At your good tracks, a top-5 is what you shoot for. Patience is definitely key. Many times last year, especially the last race of the year (at Oxford Plains Speedway), I wore myself out early. Someone who was laying back came up and got me. It’s better management on tires.

“You’re always going to have that one bad week. It’s going to happen — you can’t usually avoid it. But when you wreck the car, you’ve got to bring it in and fix it and try to do the best you can with it. That’s being consistent and not giving up. That’s basically it.”

When he’s not tackling the 14-race ACT slate, Polewarczyk will be in the K&N Pro Series East car for Fadden Racing. The team is owned by two-time series champion Mike Olsen.

Polewarczyk plans to run the first six races of the season, including the season opener at Greenville-Pickens Speedway on March 27. He made one start with Fadden Racing at New Hampshire Motor Speedway last September. Polewarczyk ran two K&N Pro Series races for different owners in 2008, posting a career-best finish of sixth at NHMS for Dave Davis.

“I think it’s a great opportunity, for sure,” he said. “Really, we’re just doing what we can to help Mike out, and hopefully we can see what happens from there.”

But Polewarczyk is also firmly focused on one thing that has thus far eluded him — an ACT title.

“Every driver before the season starts wants to win the championship,” he said. “I could have last year if we didn’t slump in mid-season. Last season, mid-season was as bad as we could get, but it was our own fault.

“But last season also brought the team so much closer together. We fought through it, got better and it’s going to be a good year for us.”

The ACT Late Model Tour begins on April 18 at Lee USA Speedway in Lee, N.H.

Greenville Season Opener Just Weeks Away

Mayfield, N.Y. (March 10, 2010): The 2010 K&N Pro Series East season doesn’t take the green flag until Saturday, March 27th, but for Dustin Delaney, driver of the No. 39 Delaney Infrastructure Chevrolet, the season will kick off this Sunday when he heads south to kick off his pre-season testing.

Delaney and his team, led by crew chief Jamie Aube, will test at Greenville-Pickens Speedway in South Carolina on March 17th and follow it up with a test at South Boston Speedway in Virginia on March 18th.

“We’re heading down south to work on the car for a few days and then we’re going to concentrate on testing,” said Delaney. “We have a clear direction to follow and our plan is to get the car the best it can be so that when we do unload at Greenville in a couple of weeks, we’re strong right out of the box.”

Delaney spent the off season racing a Late Model at New Smyrna Speedway in Florida where he posted four top-10 and three top-five finishes in four nights of racing. His success has made him only more anxious to start the 2010 season on top.

“Seat time is always a good thing,” said Delaney. “We were pretty happy with our off-season and we’re definitely anxious to put that into action in the East Series. Our goal this year is to be there in the top-five every week. Seat time – whether you’re racing a Late Model or testing at the track – is only going to help us achieve that goal.”

At Greenville last year, Delaney qualified ninth and was on his way to a top-10 finish when he got spun and was relegated to 13th for the race conclusion.

“We had a strong car last year,” said Delaney, who finished eighth in the 2009 NASCAR K&N Pro Series East point standings. “Our finish just didn’t reflect that. We’ll have a top-10 car again. Everyone is really pumped up to go and we’re all confident we’ll be competitive.”

Delaney will compete in a full 2010 schedule on the NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and has added a stop at Albany-Saratoga Speedway for the American-Canadian Tour on April 25th to his list of driving duties.

Grenier, the 2007 Thunder Road Late Model Rookie of the Year, is no stranger to the ACT Limited Sportsman (Tiger) car. During his eight (8) years behind the wheel of a Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman at Thunder Road, Grenier earned eleven (11) career victories and became a fan favorite of the Barre high banks. After running two (2) years in Thunder Road Late Model competition, Grenier ran the full season on the 2009 ACT Tour, earning ninth place in the final point standings and the 2009 ACT Tour Sportsmanship Award.

Grenier and Blake are currently finishing up preparations for the 2010 season after going over the entire car and installing a brand new crate engine from R.P.M. Racing Engines. The team has high expectations and will be considered contenders for the 2010 Bond/WIX Tiger Tour Championship.

The Bond/WIX Tiger Tour season opener is Saturday, June 5 at White Mountain Motorsports Park in North Woodstock, NH. Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman action will begin at Barre’s Thunder Road on Sunday, May 2, during Merchants Bank 150 weekend.

March 9, 2010: Officials at Speedway 660 announced today that they will be starting a new division of Bandolero cars to compete at Speedway 660 in 2010. For the first time in the history of the Speedway racers as young as 8 years old will have an opportunity to race on the oval as part of the Saturday night racing events.

The Bandolero car is built like a miniature stock car. It’s a turnkey spec series race car designed for drivers 8 to 15 years old. Safety is the number one concern starting with a shock absorbing frame design all the way to the mandated HANS device. The cars are manufactured by US Legend Cars in Charlotte, North Carolina and are being raced all around North America.

“This division will be a great addition to the Speedway and compliments our development plans very well. Introducing kids to stock car racing is a huge leap forward in developing future stars” said Speedway 660 co-owner Chris Johnston. Until 2010 racers had to be 14 or 16 to compete in stock car events.

“These cars are purposely built for the youngsters and have been designed so they are simpler to operate for youngsters then a full size stock car” added Johnston.

Although the 2010 schedule is still being finalized, it is expected that the Bandolero division will run 8-10 events this season. The Bandoleros will run as a division during regular racing events on Saturday nights at the Speedway.

For more information on the Bandolero cars, purchasing, and other details please visit www.speedway660.com

RMR snocross circuit available for purchase at conclusion of 2009-10 season

DERRY, N.H. (Mar. 9, 2010) – After a successful eight-year run that saw regional snowmobile racing attain new heights, officials at Rock Maple Racing (RMR) have announced a decision to sell the circuit at the end of this season.

RMR was founded by Don and Nancy Finck in the early 1990s. In May of 2002, New Hampshire businessmen Chuck and Mark Minasalli purchased RMR and their passion for snocross was soon clear. Through hard work and a significant investment, the Minasalli brothers lifted Rock Maple into the 21st century.

Since day one of the Minasalli era, Tara Saxton, Chuck’s stepdaughter, has been involved with day-to-day operations at RMR and has been a fixture at the track. Yet in recent years, she’s also taken on new responsibilities in KTM Properties, another of Minasalli’s business holdings. In the current business climate, her focus needs to be on growing KTM to ensure the family heritage remains successful.

The decision to sell Rock Maple has been difficult, yet the current president knows how life’s priorities often change.

“The last eight seasons have brought both challenges and wonderful friendships,” Saxton said. “This wasn’t an easy decision to accept, but our family carried the sport forward for eight years and now it’s time to turn over the reigns.”

The winter of 2009-10 was Rock Maple’s 18th consecutive season of snocross here in the northeast. During the eight-year Minasalli era, the sport grew tremendously until the economy went soft and things leveled out. By taking the circuit to new venues, the family exposed snocross to new markets and expanded the fan base.

Everyone associated with Rock Maple today, from Chuck and Mark Minasalli to Tara Saxton and the entire staff, all share the same hope that Rock Maple Racing will live on. As our nation’s economy begins to rebuild, all powersports entities will thrive once again thanks to a basic need to recreate.

Americans love snowmobiles and racing, that’s why Don and Nancy started it all nearly 20 years ago in the first place.

“I don’t think anybody who enjoys snowmobiling or snocross racing wants to see Rock Maple disappear off the map,” added Saxton. “My family hopes that somebody with a passion for racing, good business sense and a love for promotion will take over the helm. My Dad and Uncle loved the sport so much after racing a while that they bought the circuit. They took the sport to a higher level, now we hope to see it continue and prosper well into the future.”

Anyone interested in making a serious inquiry about purchasing Rock Maple Racing can contact the office at 603-437-2400. Saxton and the Minasalli family would like to thank all race teams, sponsors and staff members for supporting the series. Without all of you, there would be no Rock Maple. Any touring series is driven by talented racers, and there was never any shortage during the Minasalli era.
